View Full Version : Happy October-ween!

Always love this month.

Like the US, it's a month of celebration over here, with several of our big festivals (the 10-day Navratras, culminating in Dusshera) coming in October as well.

Since being a part of HDC, October has become a part of revisiting some fantastic classic/modern horror films, re-reading horror classics such as Dracula, Frankenstein, etc., listening to some wonderful spooky music through Neverending Wonder Radio, and generally enjoying the festive season.

So, wishing all of my HDC friends a wonderful October-ween. May the Halloween spirit burn brightly and bring a lot of happiness, joy and prosperity into your lives.

Happy Halloween-month :D

I'm one of the few people here in Denmark who actually celebrate Halloween, and people think I'm pretty weird for doing it, but I've always loved it. And it's at this time of the year where I always rediscover just why I got into all this "spooky stuff" in the first place.

I will be watching lots of movies and re-reading lots of Lovecraft in the coming weeks

I love this time of the month and it has the most parodied name of any month I think... I like it.

Rocktober, Shocktober, Wartober, Jocktober, Overstocktober...

Seriously though, the weather is great and twice as many friends actually watch horror flicks with me haha.

I'm so glad that it's October it's finally cooling off after a long hot and very humid and wet summer, I just love the way that early Autumn feels the air is crisper and fresher to me. I love watching the leaves on the trees turn from green to orange and when the sun shines through the trees it seems as if they're on fire. The world just seems like a better place in October, this month has become more to me than just another 31 days, October to me is a happy and content state of mind. I can't wait to start up all of my Halloween/October traditions. I already have my DVR set to record a ton of movies on TCM, AMC, etc. My fiancee and I are going to a pumpkin patch with my future sister in law this weekend and we get to pick out our first pumpkin of the season. I'm already planning on putting up my decorations this weekend as well and I've already made 3 Halloween related mix CDs to listen to while we decorate and carve pumpkins. Next year I'm even getting married on Halloween to the most patient and loving man I've ever met. The only thing I hate about October is that it's always gone in the blink of an eye so I have to make all 31 days count.

Wow! that's a huge compliment for me. Thanks a lot for appreciating the effort! It all started out some months back when I downloaded a video editing software just for fun, trying to make some videos for some of my favorite Bangladeshi band songs using clips or images from Hollywood movies[:p]. Anyway, I'm really beginning to love this stuffs, it's been a great fun & challange to work on those little details & compile some footage/images and then trying to adjust them with the music & lyrics in a sensible way as much as possible.

Glad you liked it. :)

Every once in a while I have to tune in to remember how fun this internet radio station is, and this is just the season for it. Welcome to Weirdsville Radio features a unique conglomeration of lighthearted and bizarre horror and Halloween themed music and ephemera. Spike Jones, Weird Al, The Munsters, Addams Family, Dickie Goodman, and lots of weird and obscure stuff that will have you scratching your head, including old radio horror movie ads and sound bites. Spotify really, really sucks compared to this. Do yourself a favor and check it out.

Went outside and walked around in the darkness a bit. The air was cool and somebody was burning leaves somewhere. A very nostalgic feeling came over me. I remembered and longed for a time when Halloween was very different than it is now. It was a time of donning disguises and abandoning all forms of parental supervision. My friends and I would revel in our freedom as we roamed the neighborhood looking for people to scare and loot to score. It was still okay to give kids home made popcorn balls and cookies. And we loved them! There was a sense of leaving civilization behind and embracing the dark and wild.

A few years later, armed with my Dick Smith Do It Yourself Make Up Book, I would get myself up as a vampire or mummy and transform my back yard into a haunted attraction- all by myself. I'd construct a cardboard coffin and fill it with a a homemade dead body. Add a few skulls and tiki torches, and Disney's Thrilling Sounds of a Haunted House playing in the background, I would scare the wits out of the neighborhood kids. They got their reward for braving my chamber of horrors!

This year I'll be working on Halloween. I'm not complaining. I'm thankful to have a job. But, I'll miss celebrating my favorite holiday. The only day we honor our dark side, our wild, primitive nature.

No hayride, just a trail through the woods behind a friend's house, we aren't getting paid either it's just people who want to come together to get dressed up and run around through the woods scaring the crap out of people. I have 4 days to get my costume and my fiancee's costume ready so I'm probably going to spend a couple hours in Walmart tonight grabbing up supplies. I've never seen the movie Hayride before :(

A little late on this, but for fans of sugary carbs, General Mills has re-released all five of its famous Monster Cereals for the season. Time to load up!

http://blog.generalmills.com/wp-content/uploads/Retro-2013-Monsters.jpg

Frute Brute and Fruity Yummy Mummy are returning to store shelves this fall. They’ll join our three other signature Monster Cereals – Franken Berry, Boo Berry and Count Chocula – for the first time, in our annual seasonal, limited time run of the cereals to celebrate Halloween.

Frute Brute was discontinued in 1982, after an eight-year run. It is considered by many collectors to be the most sought-after vintage cereal box. (Likely because it was used by movie director Quentin Tarantino in both “Reservoir Dogs” and “Pulp Fiction.”)

Fruity Yummy Mummy left shelves in 1992, after just five years.

Ok I hope this is ok to post but I need ya'lls help. I'm going as a skeleton for Halloween and I'm trying to do a pretty decent skeleton make up but all I have right now is the cheap Halloween grease paint. My face and grease paint do not get along at all, it makes my pores feel like their being murdered with acid and the smell gives me migraines. I need to know what you guys think would be the best make up to use to achieve this look. I don't ever wear make up so I'm totally lost as to what I need.

This is how it turned out with the grease paint and a liquid eyeliner pen.

The teeth are kinda messed up but I didn't want liquid eyeliner or face paint all over my lips.

The thing is after watching the documentary Never Sleep Again: The Elm Street Legacy (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1510985/) lately, I was just checking out some Fred Krueger tribute videos online and there are some awesome videos on youtube too but surprisingly none of those tribute/homage/montage videos (as far I've seen so far) have used this 90's beautiful MSG classic Nightmare as on their background music.

After a long time, rediscovering this song lately, I just thought MSG's Nightmare deserve a Freddy Krueger homage treatment! And, so here it is....hope HDC will like it :)

'Toy Story Of Terror!' Is A Hauntingly Great Halloween Special

"Toy Story Of Terror" is proudly being proclaimed as Pixar's first television special and instead of Christmas, the designated holiday is Halloween.

The set-up for "Toy Story Of Terror" is fairly simple: Woody (Tom Hanks), Buzz (Tim Allen), Jessie (Joan Cusack), Mr. Pricklepants (Timothy Dalton), Rex (Wallace Shawn), Mr. Potato Head (Don Rickles) and Trixie (Kristen Schaal) are in the trunk of Bonnie's mom's car, watching an old-fashioned horror movie. The car gets a flat tire and Bonnie and her mom decide to spend the night at a seedy motel. The toys get out to explore and get picked off one… by one…

Unlike the wonderful "Treehouse of Horror" episodes of "The Simpsons" (or the "Shrek" Halloween special), "Toy Story Of Terror" doesn't follow the format of a horror anthology. Instead, it's a single, 30-minute narrative.

The special was written and directed by Angus MacLane, a longtime Pixar employee who directed the "Small Fry" short film (there's even a weird "Small Fry" visual reference, with Bonnie wearing a DJ Blu-jay T-shirt at the end of the short). MacLane is intimately familiar with these characters, and there's an effortlessness to the storytelling that is simply wonderful. The special toggles between comedy and horror with ease, mostly facilitated by Mr. Pricklepants, the thespian hedgehog, who points out the tropes of the genre as the characters are going through them. "Psycho," "Vacancy," "Hostel," "Alien," "Motel Hell," and countless other horror movies are casually referenced, but the nods never slow down the narrative.

Good to see there are still some Halloween specials out there! Disney used to have a ton of them both animated originals, specials of their current shows, and family movies. Ah well, Youtube has them still, all the way back to the radio specials...

Every Halloween Cinemassacre presents their "MONSTER MADNESS" review series - 31 horrors reviewed over the course of the month. The reviews don't really offer much in the way of unknown information, but they're still well put together. This year is the second "Sequel-a-Thon", where he focuses on several franchises.

Have to say, though, my favourite was 2010's "Camp Cult". Some great exercises in Cinematic Excess and Counter-Cinema that I'd not heard of before.

Definitely worth a watch.

Never heard of Wade Davis before? Haven't you seen The Serpent and the Rainbow? Read the book- it's better than the film. It's a fascinating look at the voodoo legends and the science behind it. Some scientists dispute his claims, but it's still very interesting.

What is everyone's favorite Halloween Cereal? My favorite is probably a tie between Frankenberry and Boo Berry. My least favorite is probably Count Chocula (chocolate flavored cereal always tastes wierd too me.) My fiancee got me a box of Boo Berry, a tin full of Halloween shaped sugar cookies and some caramel apples so I'm surrounded in awesome Halloween themed food.

I haven't been able to find Frute Brute or Yummy Mummy anywhere yet, my dad says they have the vintage boxes at Target but the closest Target is like 25-30 minutes away and I'm not driving all the way there for a box of cereal lol. The Walmart I go to only had Boo Berry last night so I was a little bummed about that because I really wanna try Frute Brute.

Beware, Horror.com, for tonight is Halloween!

“The wind outside nested in each tree, prowled the sidewalks in invisible treads like unseen cats. Tom Skelton shivered. Anyone could see that the wind was a special wind this night, and the darkness took on a special feel because it was All Hallows' Eve. Everything seemed cut from soft black velvet or gold or orange velvet. Smoke panted up out of a thousand chimneys like the plumes of funeral parades. From kitchen windows drifted two pumpkin smells: gourds being cut, pies being baked.” - Ray Bradbury
