*sigh* I'm gonna say that I like the 28 Days Later soundtrack, and Arioch is gonna agree and say that this is the 23 Billionth time I've said it. So instead of doing that, I'mma give a different answer

I thought "The Crow" had a pretty decent soundtrack.

And whats going on with Sam. He didn't say " fuck you ,wrong folder" . He must be mellowing with age.

Brother was more of the Soundtrack Man but quite a few I like...
THE SHINING (1980) Wendy Carlos is amazing
NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD (1968).Those library cues work just fine.
THE THING (1982). So spare, yet so effective
FRIDAY, THE 13th (1980). Cheesy, but gets the job done.
THE CREATURE FROM THE BLACK LAGOON (1954). Love the "Creature" theme
JAWS (1975). My favorite Williams score
SCREAM (1996). Lot of good songs on here
DAWN OF THE DEAD (1978) Good work by Goblin, especially the creepy bass.
THE EXORCIST (1973) Awful film, but Mike Oldfield's work is amazing.

Jaws, Halloween, Friday the 13th and Nightmare on Elm Street all have great soundtracks. They help to stand in for the villain, signify it's there or throw you off.

As for soundtracks with songs with lyrics, I always liked Return of the Living Dead (particularly 'Tonight, We'll Make Love Before We Die' by SSQ). Actually, that whole soundtrack is awesome.

Also, I like the song 'I Never Dreamed Someone Like You Could Love Someone Like Me' sung by Katie Irving. It plays in the original version of 'Carrie' when Carrie dances with Tommy. The song describes Carrie so well. She really wants Tommy to like her and is very surprised that he seems to. It's a sweet moment that leaves you even more horrified when the bucket of blood falls.

Another song in a horror movie that I find good is 'There He Goes Again' performed by the Hues Corporation...and I mean performed. The group sings it and dances to it in the movie Blacula during the main club scene. It's a fun song and makes the movie that much more entertaining.

Finally, when I think about songs in horror movies, I think about 'Nightmare' sung by Tuesday Knight in A Nightmare on Elm Street Part 4: The Dream Master. It plays during the opening credits. It's kind of cheesy, but that's what I like about it.

Not much I can add here, most of what I came in to say has been listed already.

That being said, here’s a couple from my favorite slasher series that are not only good tunes, but ones that are responsible for some of the best dancing in the genre ::wink::

The music in the original Assault on Precinct 13 was very creepy, as well as having been written by the director.

When I think of horror soundtracks, the one that always sticks out in my mind is the soundtrack for Fright Night. The music in that film just seems to set the tempo and mood to me.

Depends how we're defining 'sound track'. From wiki:

A soundtrack, also written sound track,[1] can be recorded music accompanying and synchronized to the images of a motion picture, book, television program, or video game; a commercially released soundtrack album of music as featured in the soundtrack of a film, video, or television presentation; or the physical area of a film that contains the synchronized recorded sound.

For the first definition, I'd go with Alien (1979). The music and sound effects are both effective and blended so well, and with the images of the film.

For 'horror film' song, definitely "Sacred Springs" from Mothra vs Godzilla (1964).

As for an album soundtrack for a horror film... I can't say I've purchased or listened to a lot of entire horror soundtrack albums. I like the cuts on the Halloween (1979) soundtrack.

If anyone is into orchestral scores, the entire score of Theatre of Blood (1973) is just beautiful, if you listen to it outside of the film.
