I'd like to gauge interest in a HDC Movie Monster Tournament.
A "Movie Monster" would be defined as:
- a specifically named individual entity,
- with beyond human attributes,
- a physical creature,
- appearing in a horror film.
For instance, as you would expect it would include the Creature of the Black Lagoon and Godzilla; would include Dracula (beyond human & specific individual), but not vampires (because that's plural); would include Frankenstein's Monster (beyond human attributes 'strength & undead'), but not Dr. Frankenstein (not beyond human); would include Cujo (a specific individual entity), but not "dogs", "bees" or "piranha" (because those are plural); would include Michael Myer/Jason (beyond human attributes), but not a ghost or demon (not physical creature), but would include Possessed Regan (specific physical individual with beyond human attributes).
I'd structure and run as our other tournaments have been run. This type of tourney would go well with a per decade of Horror film approach, and then go into a final selection for the top Movie Monster of all-time.
Who would be interested in participating (voting)?
Anyone have any comments, suggestions, questions, anything at all?
.

I would like a monster tourney very much. Surprised it hasn't been done before. Definitely participating.

It's been done at least two times before, if not more.
My comprehensive one - http://www.horror.com/forum/showthread.php?t=58023
Posher's Best Creature tourney - http://www.horror.com/forum/showthread.php?t=28439
Posher's Legendary Creature tourney - http://www.horror.com/forum/showthread.php?t=33760
...plus plenty of Gore's Horror Icon tournaments figured movie monsters/creatures, not to mention other "Horror Icon" tourneys.

Didn't we already do this? I can't search on my phone but it was The Monsters/Creatures tournament or something like that. Frankenstein's Monster won if I remember correctly.

Didn't someone suggest a cryptids tournament a while back? Maybe Chrono..... Maybe a little info on each one to help people cast their votes.

If you do a new tournament, I will participate. I did not get to participate in those other monster tournaments.

Thanks, V! I'll check these out for research. Sounds like plenty of us missed out on ones done in the past (including myself), and would enjoy being a part of current one.
We have more people interested? Any comments, concerns, suggestions?

Many of the folks who participated in these older tournaments no longer frequent this forum or participate in these Tournaments so it might be interesting to see how results may vary based on different voters so I guess I'm not against another tournament. However, I don't think we should just keep repeating the same things over again so perhaps there should be a different criteria in making the selections. Usually these are fairly open to interpretation but perhaps being more specific would help give it a new approach. Are we imagining these monsters physically fighting each other? Are we voting for most memorable? Biggest impact on Monster cinema? Strictly your personal favorite? Just my thoughts.

Good questions. None of the three old tournies had any categorical setup (monster type, decade, etc), they were just randomized selections and brackets. Two were basically asking folks to "pick the one you like better". And one was "who would win in a fight" which was a cool fun idea.
There's only so many things you can judge by. I'd tend to go by a definition of the 'greatest' which would be a subjective combination of personal level of impact of any kind, depth of fascination, depth of background and interesting characteristics, creatures' wider symbolism, impact on film history and fame. But not sure yet. I'll mull over some ideas. (You know that expression, Kan?) ;)

I'd love to see this happen, but agree it would be nice to have a slightly different spin on it for those that were around for past tournaments. I don't know how well I'll do. I don't think I watch all that many monster movies. But it would be fun to see them in action, and I'm sure I'll discover new movies to watch.

If you present a different type of tournament then I will definitely participate but if its done in the same vein as the others I don't really see the point. Have at it though

How about if we did a 'who would win in a fight' tournament called "Villain Vs Movie Monsters", pitting you against all the famous film freaks. And you could provide us a picture of yourself, and we can encourage folks to post a photoshopped pic of the foray! Whattaya think? ;) (I'm just kidding with you!)

I don't know what your problem is. I simply made a comment that this tournament has been done before so i don't see the point. It's not my fault that you didn't take the time to search and find out that it has been done. Even so i still said have at it and even said i would participate if you changed it up a bit but if you're going to be an asshole, count me out.

Not to start anything but, I have to say that I agree with The Villain. You asked for people's input and he provided his or hers. If you do not wish to take his or hers advice, that is fine, but you should not insult him or her. I do not have a problem with you doing another one because I did not get to participate in the other one(s). At least that's my opinion.

Good grief! I was kidding with you, Villain! I thought you'd think it was hilarious! I've been here for months and made hundreds of posts, when have I ever personally insulted or attacked somebody? Obviously you didn't get I was kidding with you, which is on me, I apologize I was too inexplicit about it, but I'm shocked you didn't get I was kidding with you.

It seemed antagonistic and really sarcastic. It seemed like you were angry that i voiced an issue over this idea for a tournament. If that wasn't what you meant, then im sorry i took it the wrong way. In the future you might want to try and be a little more clear with how you say things and when you say them.

That's quite alright. I'll be more explicit and careful about kidding around in the future. We're just people, intent behind posted text is really easy to be misconstrued. I am really appreciating your feedback on this!
