View Full Version : Unofficial 1980s Horror Movie Tournament

I was looking through the forums yesterday and I saw a tournament published a long time ago about 80s horror movies, so I thought I would re-launch a similar idea. Basically, there will 6 sections with three parts each (except slashers which will have five parts because the 1980s was the Slasher Age), the sections will be Slasher, Sci-fi Horror, Supernatural, Stephen King, Classic monsters (i.e vampires and werewolfs), and Zombies. You will vote for one film in each section, then after we have gone through all the sections, we will vote for which is the best of these. Finally, we will the vote for the all-time best. So, at the end, we will have the best in each sub-genre, as well as the best of the 1980s. The first film with five votes wins. I will reveal my pick after the winner is revealed or if there is a tie (me being the tie-breaker). Well, I hope this sounds interesting because I don't want this thread to die after all the work I put into it.

The first.
The whole film felt different to the rest of the series.
I suppose had I not seen them out of sequence and/or heard about it prior, the "reveal" would have been pretty interesting too...but yes, on the kills, the atmosphere, and the killed characters that seemed just a little more fleshed out than most of those int he sequels - I go with F13.
...Though I quite liked Jason goes to Hell too, likely for the same amount of differences to the others, if nothing else.

Friday the 13th Part III: 2 (Fulg Hoar AR and tiberius)
Friday the 13th Pat VI: Jason Lives: 0
Thus, Friday the 13th Part I is the winner!

Well, after a grueling match between the three, we finally have a winner! Here were the results:
Prom Night: 5 (natedog722, horrorfangirl66, tiberius, MichaelMyers, and Sculpt)
Happy Birthday to Me: 4 (knife_fight, newb, Rela1024, and realdealblues)
Mother's Day: 3 (V, The Villain, and fortunato)
Thus, Prom Night is the winner!
Unfortunately, I have not seen Happy Birthday to Me or Mother's Day, but have heard alot of good things about them. Consequently, I would also have chosen Prom Night.
We will now move on to the next category of horror movies: Scfi Horror
Also, I would like to inform everyone that just in case a particular category threatens to kill this thread I will impose a maximum time limit on each section. Here is the modified rule: after I post a given section, then there will be an approximately 68 to 72 hour maximum time frame to respond. If a film has failed to receive the five votes needed to win by or before that time, then the film with the most votes will win. If there is a tie, then my vote will be the tie-breaker. Hopefully, I will not have to invoke the time frame clause, but I just want to have it for additional protection to prevent the death of this thread.

Personally, it would have been between Aliens and Predator, although Night of the Comet was perhaps the best B-Movie of the 1980s. In the end, the two films have their own things that make them awesome. So, for me, it comes down to the creature I liked best. So, I would have chosen Predator. I have never seen Twilight Zone: The Movie, but some really good directors directed segments of the film. I also have never seen Videodrome, but I heard it was really good (in fact, i just added it to my dvd queue for Netflix, so I should watch it soon). I probably would have voted for The Stuff because it was a really good movie, which both satired consumerism in the 1980s and parodied The Blob at the same time. This film is not in any way to be taken seriously, this is part of the charm. I'm not sure if it is better than Videodrome because I have not seen it, but it was still really good nonetheless.

For me, this is an easy choice: Poltergeist. The reason being that it was a phenomenal film, not to mention a horror movie classic. I have heard a lot of good things about Demons, but I don't think it could ever be better than a classic like Poltergeist. I have not seen Demons (but I did order it from Netflix, so I will be able to watch it soon). Just a note, even though Amityville II is not a masterpiece, I still really enjoyed it. It had some charm to it, although it was nowhere near as good as the original and is the worst of the films here.

The Evil Dead: 6 (natedog722, MichaelMyers, tiberius, Rela1024, Fulg HoarAR, and knife_fight)
Demons 2: 0
Evil Dead II: 4 (horrorfangirl66, Sculpt, The Villain, and bamahorrorfan87)
Thus, after a close match between The Evil Dead and its sequel, Evil Dead II, The Evil Dead emerged victorious!
My vote would have also have gone to The Evil Dead. I thought the sequel was pretty good, but I preferred the darker tone of the series. The humorous tone of the second was a huge shift, that I had trouble buying. I suppose the sequel is really good, but simply not as good as the original.

I definitely agree that The Shining was an absolutely brilliant film and would definitely have been my pick for this round. The Fog and The changeling are really awesome films, although not anywhere near the level of The Shining. I would go on to say it was one of the greatest horror films of the 1980s and possibly the entire century. This is one of the few films that have virtually no flaws. Plus, Stanley Kubrick directed this film and he is one of my all-time favorite directors. Thus, for me, despite the other two being great movies, The Shining was the only film I would have chosen.

For me, this match would have been between Cujo and Christine (although Silver Bullet is really good too). Ultimately, I believe Christine was the superior film because I thought the acting and story was more compelling than Cujo. Plus, Christine was directed by Horror Movie Genius John Carpenter. Although, in terms of acting, it should be noted that Cujo does star notable scream queen Dee Wallace, but I still would have voted for Christine.

Personally, this would have been an easy choice: Pet Sematary. I thought this was one of the best (probably top five) Stephen King adaptations ever made. In fact, this film would also be in my top 25 favorite horror movies of all time. That being said, it should be noted that Children of the Corn was also a really good adaptation as well (it starred Linda Hamilton, who also played the role of Sarah Conner in The Terminator series). The Howling: 4 (realdealblues, Sculpt, knife_fight, and natedog722)
Howling II: 1 (MichaelMyers)
Thus, An American Werewolf in London is clearly the winner!
Personally, it would have been between An American Werewolf in London and The Howling. Although they are both about werewolves, they approach the material in different ways and thus have their own things that I like. That being said, I would choose The Howling for two reasons. First it stars scream queen Dee Wallace, who delivered a terrific performance. The Second I liked how they referenced various older werewolf movies, similar to what my favorite horror film, Scream, did. Ultimately, it was a hard choice, but The Howling would be my choice.
P.S. The reason it took me so long to publish the results was because of school work and because I have (temporarily) moved out of horror movies and back in to Star Trek. Hopefully, I should still be able to keep on top of this thread, despite my (temporary) interest change.

Fright Night is one of my favourite vampire movies and a brilliant tongue in cheek horror flick. Tom Holland did a great job of delivering a legitimate horror while still spoofing the genre.... Even to the point where he is using the Peter Vincent character to take a swipe at the over saturation of by the numbers slasher flicks around at the time. Great directing that actually provides a ton of atmosphere and some quality special effects. Totally adore it.
That said, since it's already wrapped up the win, I'm voting for Fright Night 2, for other reasons....

The Lost Boys: 8 (realdealblues, The Villain, Rela1024, bamahorrorfan87, horrorfangirl66, roshiq, Anthropophagus, and knife_fight)
The Monster Squad: 4 (MichaelMyers, V, fortunato, and Fulg Hoar AR)
Thus, The Lost Boys is clearly the winner!
I have honestly not seen any of these films, but if I had to choose, I would choose The Lost Boys.
Again, I am sorry it has taken so long. I have had a great deal of school work and am extremely deep in my interest of Star Trek, at the same time.
Chicks dig horror fans. Not "Trekkies."

It appears we have a winner! Here were the results:
Zombie 2: 5 (The Villain, Anthropophagus, roshiq, V, and realdealblues)
The Return of the Living Dead: 7 (fortunato, horrorfangirl66, bamahorrorfan87, Kandarian Demon, knife_fight, Sculpt, and Rela1024)
The Return of the Living Dead II: 0
Thus, after a close race, The Return of the Living Dead is the winner!
Personally, I would have chosen The Return of the Living Dead, but Zombie 2 was really good.
