So I recently received a leather bound book of all of Lovecraft's fiction for Christmas from my awesome girlfriend and have only read a few of his stories so far. What are your favorite stories by him? I mean I know the big ones like The Call of Cthulhu and The Re-animator but any of you have a few more obscure favorites?

I wouldn't call Re-Animator one of Lovecraft's " big ones" at all. It was, in fact, a relatively minor work of his, a work for hire, revising a story written by a client. The fact an excellent movie LOOSELY based on the story has been made, doesn't qualify the story as a major work.

His really major works, of course, would be The Color Out of Space, At the Mountains of Madness and The Shadow Over Innsmouth. All three are all excellent entry points into Lovecraft's world.

A personal favorite of mine is The Dream Quest of the Unknown Kadath for its striking and startling imagery. It can be a tough read, but well worth the effort, IMO.

I'm currently working on a Lovecraftian tale inspired by his early prose poem Ex Oblivione.

Can't remember individual titles off-hand but until it was stolen out of my car, THE CALL OF CTHULHU AND OTHER WEIRD STORIES edited by S.T. Joshi had nothing but great stories, not to mention an equally great introduction and notes. There's little doubt the stories I didn't get to were no less great. I think there are laws preventing me from saying what I hope happens to the scum who stole it.

Sure. But as I mentioned, for Lovecraft it was a minor work, not on par with his own creations.

I really like Dagon. Stuart Gordon's movie, by the way, is awesome.

I posted a review of Dagon I believe. I love the town some of the crazy stuff that goes on. But not the movie as a whole so much.

This is the only copy I know of the complete works in print.

This is the only copy I know of the complete works in print.

The first print of that book has tons of typos. There is supposed to be a second printing that fixes those. Also, there is another book called "Necronomicon: Weird Tales of HP Lovecraft" that has a lot of the same material.

No book seems to be complete from what I'm reading. I'm going to do a few more searches before I decide what route I'm going to take.

I just bought the complete HP Lovecraft for 2.99 on kindle. definitely worth 3 bucks.
