First one has struck.
Patti Page @ 85 (Rise to fame - "Tennessee Waltz" singer).
NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Unforgettable songs like "Tennessee Waltz" and "(How Much Is That) Doggie in the Window?" made Patti Page the best-selling female singer of the 1950s and a star who would spend much of the rest of her life traveling the world.
Page died on New Year's Day in Encinitas, Calif., according to publicist Schatzi Hageman, ending one of pop music's most diverse careers. She was 85 and just five weeks away from being honored at the Grammy Awards with a Lifetime Achievement Award from The Recording Academy.
"Tennessee Waltz" scored the rare achievement of reaching No. 1 on the pop, country and R&B charts simultaneously and was officially adopted as one of two official songs by the state of Tennessee. Its reach was so powerful, six other artists reached the charts the following year with covers.
Two other hits, "I Went To Your Wedding" and "Doggie in the Window," which had a second life for decades as a children's song, each spent more than two months at No. 1. Other hits included "Mockin' Bird Hill," "Hush, Hush, Sweet Charlotte," and "Allegheny Moon." She teamed with George Jones on "You Never Looked That Good When You Were Mine."

David R. Ellis @ 60. (Snakes on a Plane, The Final Destination)
Director David R. Ellis — who helmed mass entertainment like Snakes on a Plane, Cellular, and The Final Destination — died today.
He was 60 years old. No cause of death has been released.
Ellis got his start as an actor and stuntman, transitioning into directing the second units on action-based productions like Waterworld, The Perfect Storm, The Matrix Reloaded, and Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World. His feature directing debut was the 1996 family production Homeward Bound 2: Lost in San Francisco, but he quickly transitioned to genre-soaked thrillers starting with 2003′s Final Destination 2, Asylum, Shark Night 3D, among others.
According to Deadline, he reportedly passed away in Johannesburg, South Africa while prepping his next film, Kite, an adaptation of a Japanese animé that has Snakes on a Plane star Samuel L. Jackson attached as the lead.

Michael Winner @ 77. (Death Wish director)
Winner had been in ill health for a number of years and almost died after contracting a bacterial infection while holidaying on Barbados in January 2007.
Born to a wealthy family in north London, Winner cut his teeth at the BBC before making his debut as a writer-director with the 1960 crime thriller Shoot to Kill. His freewheeling 1964 sex comedy The System established him as a key chronicler of swinging 60s London and gave rise to a fruitful collaboration with the hell-raising actor Oliver Reed. Winner went on to work with Reed again on The Jokers, I'll Never Forget What's'isname and the 1968 wartime saga Hannibal Brooks.
Yet Winner's greatest success came in the US, when he took the reins of the 1974 vigilante drama Death Wish from original director Sidney Lumet. Death Wish, starring Charles Bronson as a mild-mannered architect turned gun-toting angel of vengeance, bloomed into one of the year's biggest box-office hits and went on to spawn two sequels. Winner's other American films include Lawman, The Mechanic, The Big Sleep and Scorpio. He also worked with a wild-eyed Marlon Brando on The Nightcomers, an overheated prequel to the Henry James story The Turn of the Screw.
During his heyday, Winner took pride in making violent, simple, populist pictures that irked the critics and appeared to relish his role as a man who called the shots. "A team effort is a lot of people doing what I say," he once remarked. His career waned in the 90s and he bowed out with the 1999 hitman caper Parting Shots, a British film that reunited him with his old friend Oliver Reed.

Lloyd Phillips @ 63.
Lloyd Phillips, an Academy Award-winning producer, died in Los Angeles on Jan. 25 after suffering a heart attack, his representative said.
He was 63.
In 32 years in the movie business, Phillips produced films including “Inglourious Basterds,” “The Legend of Zorro" and “Twelve Monkeys," as well as Zack Snyder's upcoming "Superman" reboot, "Man of Steel."
Angelina Jolie, who worked with Phillips on 2010's "The Tourist" and 2003's "Beyond Borders," called the deceased producer "a true original, loved by anyone who knew him well.”
“He had a kind heart and a wonderful sense of adventure," Jolie said. "His death is a terrible shock and a tremendous loss. He was so full of life that it is impossible to believe he is gone.”

Patty Andrews @ 94.
Patty Andrews, the last surviving member of the singing Andrews Sisters, died Wednesday at 94.
She was the lead singer for the trio, whose hits -- including “Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy” and “I Can Dream, Can’t I?” -- helped cheer American GIs abroad and those on the home front during World War II.
Andrews died of natural causes at her home in the Los Angeles suburb of Northridge, family spokesman Alan Eichler told the Associated Press.
The Andrews Sisters -- which she formed with her sisters LaVerne and Maxene -- recorded more than 400 songs and sold more than 80 million records. Their most well-know songs included “Bei Mir Bist Du Schoen,” “Beat Me Daddy, Eight to the Bar” and ”Rum and Coca-Cola.”
Patty Andrews was the group's most high-profile member, always centerstage and often jitterbugging to the tunes.
The sisters recorded with popular swing bands of the ‘40s, including those fronted by Benny Goodman, Glenn Miller, Jimmy Dorsey, Bob Crosby, Woody Herman, Guy Lombardo, Desi Arnaz and Russ Morgan. They had a hit -- "Don't Fence Me In" -- with Bing Crosby, and they also recorded with Dick Haymes, Carmen Miranda, Danny Kaye, Al Jolson, Jimmy Durante and Red Foley.
The Andrews Sisters’ popularity led to a contract with Universal Pictures, where they made a dozen low-budget musical comedies between 1940 and 1944. But their most well-known movie was at Paramount, 1947's "Road to Rio" with Crosby, Bob Hope and Dorothy Lamour.

Stuart Freeborn @ 98.
British make-up artist crafted Star Wars creatures and worked with Kubrick on 2001: A Space Odyssey
Stuart Freeborn, the British pioneering movie makeup artist behind creatures such as Yoda and Chewbacca in the Star Wars films, has died. He was 98.
LucasFilm confirmed Wednesday that Freeborn had died, "leaving a legacy of unforgettable contributions".
Star Wars director George Lucas said in a statement that Freeborn was "already a makeup legend" when he started working on the space epic.
Freeborn's six-decade career led him to work on many classics, including Stanley Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey.
He began his film career in the 1930s, working for the Hungarian-born director Alexander Korda and honing his makeup skills on stars including Marlene Dietrich and Vivien Leigh.
After air force service during the second world war he worked on British cinema classics including The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp and David Lean's 1948 version of Oliver Twist. His transformation of Alec Guinness into Fagin complete with a large hooked nose was criticised by some as antisemitic, a matter of regret for Freeborn, who said he was partly Jewish.
Freeborn later worked with Kubrick, transforming Peter Sellers into multiple characters for Doctor Strangelove before designing the apes for the Dawn of Man sequence, in which primates react to a mysterious monolith, Kubrick's Space Odyssey.
He will likely be best remembered for his work on Star Wars creating characters such as the 7ft tall wookie Chewbacca and the slug-like Jabba the Hutt.
LucasFilm said Irvin Kershner, who directed The Empire Strikes Back, would "note that Freeborn quite literally put himself into Yoda, as the Jedi master's inquisitive and mischievous elfin features had more than a passing resemblance to Freeborn himself". Yoda's looks were also said to be partly inspired by Albert Einstein.
Nick Maley, a make-up artist who worked with Freeborn in the 1970s, called him a mentor who "ran his department like a headmaster".
"Everybody will remember him for Star Wars but he did so much more than that. No one should overlook the groundbreaking work he did on 2001: A Space Odyssey. That was really the forerunner of Star Wars and used a lot of the same technology."

According to his newspaper the Chicago Sun-Times, Roger Ebert died today from cancer. I post this because not only is it news, but he is one of the friendliest of the mainstream critics toward horror movies (he gave four out of four stars to such films as Paranormal Activity, The Cabin in the Woods, The Last House on the Left, Scream, Halloween, and The Blair Witch Project). Even giving high praise to such films as Motel Hell and Candyman. I did not always agree with him on horror movies (for instance, his crusade against slashers in the 1980s), but he gave several horror movies a chance, that other critics did not. I always read his reviews and found them interesting (even if I did not agree).

I will miss him. I grew up in a suburb of Chicago, and we got the Suntimes everyday. I read his movie reviews constantly. And I used to watch him on Sneak Previews, which was a PBS show in Chicago starting 1975, with Siskel and Ebert.
In 1982 they left Sneak Previews/PBS and to create At the Movies, which went nationwide.
Ebert was kinder to horror movies and artful elements, than Siskel was, in general. I agreed and disagreed with both (what a surprise!). But like Siskel, and everybody, Ebert had things he didn't like that tarnished a movie's rating. Like for instance, Ebert gave 'Terminator' Zero stars (out of 5). After I saw it, I was like 'what?'. He also gave Matrix a poor review, cause the subject matter bothered him. But I loved Ebert, will miss him like a lifelong friend.

Ray Manzarek @ 74 - The Doors' keyboardist.
Ray Manzarek, whose keyboard playing was a central element to the sound of '60s rock group The Doors, has died at the age of 74, it was reported on the band's Facebook page.
According to the band's Facebook page, Manzarek died shortly after noon on Monday at the RoMed Clinic in Rosenheim, Germany, while surrounded by his wife Dorothy and his brothers Rick and James.
Manzarek had been battling bile duct cancer.
Born Raymond Daniel Manczarek, Jr. in Chicago, Manzarek formed The Doors in 1965, after meeting fellow UCLA film student Jim Morrison, who became the group's vocalist. After their stints at UCLA, the pair had a chance meeting at Venice Beach, during which Morrison told Manzarek that he had been writing songs. The group was filled out by drummer John Densmore and guitarist Robby Krieger, whom he'd met at a lecture on transcendental meditation.
Propelled by Manzarek's distinctive organ sound and Morrison's crooned, poetic lyrics, the group would go on to have a string of hits, most notably "Light My Fire," from their 1967, self-titled debut album. Other hits, including "Love Me Two Times," "Touch Me" and "L.A. Woman" followed, until Morrison's 1971 death. Though the surviving members would carry on briefly following Morrison's death, they never matched the success they achieved with their darkly charismatic frontman.

RIP RICHARD MATHESON
As many are saying, He Is Legend.
It's impossibe to overstate his talent or his importance in the horror genre. His influence is felt in every medium.
He wrote many iconic novels: I Am Legend, Stir of Echoes, The Shrinking Man, Hell House.
He wrote most of the Corman Poe films, Speilberg's debut Duel, adaptations of his novels.
He wrote scripts for just about every spooky TV show- Alfred Hitchcock, Thriller, Twilight Zone, Star Trek, The Night Stalker, The Night Gallery, Amazing Stories, and more.
He's Stephen King's favorite writer.

I never saw him in too much else, and while in my personal opinion this show was only really ever worth the effort throughout season 1 and went downhill pretty fast, it's still a shame to see someone go out that early in life.

As well as appearing in countless dramatic roles in films such as Five Easy Pieces and Nashville, Karen Black had a penchant for genre films and appeared in many horror films, good and bad. In fact, in a poll here at HDC I posted her as my favorite "scream queen."
Burnt Offerings, Trilogy of Terror, House of 1,000 Corpses, Invaders From Mars, Evil Spirits, the list goes on and on. A really great actress who could bring a serious dramatic flair to a role, but wasn't affreaid to let it all hang out and ham it up when necessary.

Well said, Never. What I really liked about Karen Black as an actress, or perhaps as a person, is she expertly, or effortlessly, conveyed personal vulnerability in her roles, which endears the film viewer care about the character; we let the character in, suspension of disbelief is realized, and we are in it together with Karen. You can see it. You can feel it. Can you see in these photos?

HDC member stygianwitch (http://www.horror.com/forum/member.php?u=8789) passed away in her sleep on 06th August, 2013, at her home due to complications arising out of a viral infection.

She was a wonderful, warm, lovely soul who was very friendly, easy-going and had a humble demeanor. She also possessed a lot of knowledge on a wide variety of stuff and you could talk to her about anything.
Through our forum, she had met fellow HDC member tic and both of them fell in love and married back in 2009. Those were wonderful moments...old-timers should remember.

Richard C Sarafian @ 83.
Vanishing Point was one of a crop of existential road movies in the early 1970s which quickly gained cult status.
Its director, Richard C Sarafian, who has died aged 83, never made another film that struck such a resounding chord with audiences, countercultural or otherwise. No matter: the appeal of Vanishing Point was enduring enough to make him a noted, even influential, figure.
Quentin Tarantino thanked Sarafian in the closing credits of his own four-wheeled thriller, Death Proof (2007), and the Scottish band Primal Scream signalled their admiration for Vanishing Point by naming a 1997 album after the movie.

Hal Needham @ 82.
Hal Needham, longtime stuntman and director of “Smokey and the Bandit” and “Cannonball Run” for Burt Reynolds, died Friday in Los Angeles after a short battle with cancer, his manager confirmed.
He was 82.
At one time the highest paid stuntman in the world, he was said to have broken 56 bones, broken his back twice, punctured a lung and knocked out a few teeth while working on 4500 TV episodes and 310 feature films.
Needham, a native of Tennessee, broke into show business as a stunt double for Richard Boone on the series “Have Gun, Will Travel.” Among the hundreds of films on which he did stunts were “Stagecoach,” “How the West Was Won,” “The Bridge at Remagen,” “The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance” and “Little Big Man.”
He developed numerous camera and production innovations, and won a Scientific and Engineering Oscar in 1987 for the design and development of the Shotmaker Elite camera car and crane. Among his other inventions were the air ram, air bag, car cannon turnover, nitrogen ratchet, jerk-off ratchet and rocket power.

Ray Price @ 87.
http://userserve-ak.last.fm/serve/_/13881155/Ray+Price+cherokeecowboypromo.jpg
Perhaps best known for his version of the Kris Kristofferson song "For the Good Times," a pop hit in 1970, the velvet-voiced Price was a giant among traditional country performers in the 1950s, '60s and '70s, as likely to defy a trend as he was to defend one. He helped invent the genre's honky-tonk sound early in his career, then took it in a more polished direction.
He reached the Billboard Hot 100 eight times from 1958-73 and had seven No. 1 hits and more than 100 titles on the Billboard country chart from 1952 to 1989. "For the Good Times" was his biggest crossover hit, reaching No. 11 on the Billboard pop music singles chart. His other country hits included "Crazy Arms," ''Release Me," ''The Same Old Me," ''Heartaches by the Number," ''City Lights" and "Too Young to Die."
