A 31-year-old Indian woman died in Ireland from blood poisoning after doctors allegedly refused to perform an abortion as it is "a Catholic country".

Irish authorities have launched a probe into the death of Savita Halappanavar, a dentist, who was 17 weeks pregnant. She had suffered a miscarriage and later died of septicaemia at University Hospital Galway in October, The Irish Times reported on Wednesday.

Her husband, Praveen Halappanavar, an engineer at Boston Scientific in Galway, said that she asked several times over a three-day period that the pregnancy be terminated.

Praveen said having been told she was miscarrying, and after one day in severe pain, Savita asked for a medical termination.

This was refused, he says, because the foetal heartbeat was still present and they were told, "this is a Catholic country".

The dead foetus was later removed and Savita was taken to the high dependency unit and then the intensive care unit, where she died of septicaemia on October 28.

An autopsy carried out two days later found she died of septicaemia "documented ante-mortem" and E.coli ESBL.

A hospital spokesperson confirmed that the Health Service Executive had begun an investigation while the hospital had also instigated an internal investigation.

Abortion is illegal in the Republic of Ireland.

In such a case, whose life is more important, and hence should be saved? Should laws exist at the expense of lives?

i feel so sorry for her.
this is why i believe in abortion to an extent.
like if you're a spoiled brat that got pregnant and since you only care about your looks and yourself you get an abortion to keep your figure and continue to concentrate on yourself, then that's horrible.
but in cases like this it needs to happen.
and in the case of staying celibate since she's Indian and their religion is all about pleasing the husband it's hard. if a husband wants a child he's gonna get a child no matter what the wife says.

What is 'their religion' and how is it all about pleasing the husband?

Are you getting Hinduism* and Sharia Law confused?

Do you truely believe that educated Indian men typically rape their wives for a child because of their religious beliefs?

*I'm just gonna go ahead and assume that when you say "their religion" you must be refering to Hinduism, since its the majoirty religion of India.

I think this thread has shown that many people still harbor ignorant views of women's issues, abortion, and racist cultural opinions.

like if you're a spoiled brat that got pregnant and since you only care about your looks and yourself you get an abortion to keep your figure and continue to concentrate on yourself, then that's horrible.
This makes absolutely no sense whatsoever. I'd argue that next to never does this actually happen and if you believe it to be true, it only shows that you're judging someone without actually knowing the full extent of a situation. You can't look on the outside of a situation and know what's happening on the inside. Even if it appears to you that someone is undergoing an abortion to "keep their figure", it doesn't necessarily mean that's the actual reason. And even if they were, so what? What gives you the right to determine what other people can and cannot do with their bodies?

This also shows that you have no pragmatic view of what abortion is or what happens when someone undergoes abortion. People speak about abortion as if a woman is going to a McDonalds to get a $1 menu, emotionless abortion. I know that at least in America, under the Hyde Amendment to the Roe vs. Wade ruling, tax money is not allowed to cover abortions which shifts the financial responsibility onto the the woman undergoing the procedure, which is a further slap in the face because most women undergoing abortion are women who have been victims of abuse in one of its various forms and lack the financial means to pay for an abortion, let alone a child. It's also a very painful procedure both physically and emotionally.

And again, I can mainly speak about politics related to abortion and women's issues in America because that's where I live and study but when we deny women their basic rights to birth control and then deny them the right to abortion, it's essentially holding a gun to their heads.

I don't even know how to begin on the statement of Indian males. Other than to say that what you've stated is incredibly ignorant, this is something you're going to need to research on your own (actually, you should probably research all of this on your own and re-evaluate your views).

I recommend to anyone who is seriously interested in the abortion "debate" to watch Lake of Fire.
