I had a piss-poor movie watching year. Plus a lot of the movies I wanted to see didn't stick around for very long.

I had a pathetic year for movies. Only seeing 2 in the theaters and probably wont get to the theater the rest of the year either. I saw The woman in Black and Ted in the theater. I've rented other movies that came out, but don't remember them right now. I haven't seen a lot of the movies already listed yet. :( i'll see them eventually.
While this might attract ridicule, I thought Magic Mike was an incredible film.
The Villain

Ill add Argo, The Possession and Savages to those lists

Loved Cosmopolis, The Dark Knight Rises, and Dredd. Aside from that a pretty lacklustre year. Argo, Moonrise Kingdom, and Cabin in the Woods look quite promising though, so they might make it on the list once (if) I get the chance to see them.
The Lopper

The last good movie I saw was back in September of 2011. And that was Chrome Skull: Laid to Rest 2.

Roshiq, my fellow ex-zombie titan, I must take exception to classifying Prometheus as non-horror: if that is the case, then so is the Aliens franchise, which many horror fans claim as their own.

I thought these were 2011 films? They were awesome anyway.

The Cabin In The Woods and Sinister. Two of the best horror movies to come out in quite some time.

1. most definitely "Life of Pi".
I also believe a lot of people would like "Cloud Atlas".
Both very beautiful movies.

"Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter." I think it's the first modern classic horror fantasy to come out in many years. I think it's as good as "The Wizard of Oz" and "Star Wars," in certain ways, in terms of being a quality story construction of fantasy material.
There are some rough edges that bother me--the scenes could use tweaking with additional dialogue to sharpen the story, and character development, as some have noted, is slim. But it gets the main drama and the visual symbology right, so I would say it gets the big picture right, and delivers less on the small details.

I didn't see all that much in the theater this year, either. But I'd have to go with:

Dark Knight Rises for sure!
I enjoyed Avengers the most - for me the best film was Beasts of the Southern Wild - really stuck with me. Also really affected by The Master.
Cabin was the best horror flick imho.

FINALLY watched Sinister. Good, solid horror movie and one of the best horror films of the year.
I liked it for the most part but thought the villain looked a bit stupid like it was out of some bad metal video. Also I'm getting pretty sick of the cheap last scare/jump scenes in stuff recently it just cheapens the film. I think it would've been more effective and dark if it was left as is.

Yeah, again, I didn't like anything much besides "Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter."
I am not knocking "The Avengers" to be mean, because I know a lot of people like it, but, for all its spectacle and its huge production, it came off to me as an empty, flashy show. I loved the huge effects shots, and I laughed at a lot of the jokes, but I didn't feel involved in the story. If you loved it, you came out better than I did.

I agree, and I was really wary about it when I watched the trailers, so I was surprised and how de-emphasized the Villain was - I expected to see lots of Darth Moll like in Insidious. ;)
And I AGREE about the stupid jump scare at the end - It's actually pretty laughable... I think that part of the "Point" is that YOU are the viewer, so YOU'RE NEXT... I mean, COME ON the Clever viewer doesn't need to get hit over the head with that.
...
(but I shamefully admit, I jumped at the cheap scare at the end even though I knew it was coming :o)

Haha I jumped too :p
I thought the similar "jump" at the end of The Pact ruined the film to an extent as well.
It's becoming a bit of a pet hate for me.
