View Full Version : Neverending Wonder Radio - Halloween Broadcast tribute
It's that time of year again.....but wait...something is...missing. October will not be the same without
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v259/rockinmule/newnew_zps00194464.gif
So this is my Tribute Thread to the music and sounds of Halloween and the man who made the season just a bit more special....Lee Widener aka Uncle Ozma
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v259/rockinmule/lee_zps61605341.jpg
Here is how this thread will work: Anybody can post youtube videos here as long as they are keeping in the spirit of NEVERENDING WONDER RADIO. Which is pretty much anything Halloween related. The more obscure the better.
I shall start it off with something I would request every year

For 11 years I ran an internet radio station, and during the month of October I did a monthlong celebration of Halloween, featuring a wide variety of Halloween themed music, horror film soundtracks and spooky old time radio shows, culminating in a 2 or 3 day long live broadcast marathon, with a chatroom for people to gather. A lot of the long time members of HDC liked to tune in and hang in the chat room. A fun time was had by all, as they say.
Earlier this year I suffered a series of catastrophic computer meltdowns, and lost everything- music, software, even the ability to broadcast, as I now am reduced to using a crappy old laptop to get online. Some of the station's longtime fans will miss the Halloween tradition. I'm not bragging to say there was nothing else like it, online or elsewhere.
This is what they're refering to.

Being an Indian, Halloween wasn't a part of my routine until I started tuning into NEW Radio from way back (in 2006 or 07). I am a habitual late riser, and never get up before 9 AM my time.
For the month of October, specially the last 3 days of the chats and live broadcasting, I was getting up at 5-6 AM, rubbing my eyes fiercely as I cranked up the computer and started Winamp to tune into NEW Live! Come 1st of November, 5 AM my time, I would be tuned into NEW Radio, catching the last few hours of Halloween Live broadcast.
Due to the time differences, late night prime time in the US was very early morning time for me. I would be a bit dull and laggard throughout the rest of the day, due to the lack of sleep, but never regretted it.
Same for the HDC Awards.
Only a few hours sleep (3, maybe 4 max). But the broadcast of NEW made it worth getting up so early. Everyone in my family knows by now that if I got up early, it was definitely going to be a NEW broadcast day.
Shame there won't be one this year. I will definitely miss it.

Like V said, Halloween wasn't a local tradition in our Bengali culture also. But yeah...for last couple of years as I've become a huge fan of horror movies and started to tuned in on NEW radio occasionally at Halloween season, it become a totally different & exceptional experience for me. Though I might not have been a regular listener like others but whenever I managed some time & visited the site, Uncle Ozma always able to amazed me with his odd & surprising set of playlist every time. It was a totally shocking & saddest moment for the fans when we came to know that there will be no NEW broadcasting anymore! Damn! lately I have rediscovered some very rare Horror themed creepy BANGLA songs and I wish I could share them with NE on his awesome channel (I just uploaded them on youtube with set of creepy images using on the background).
I remember, last year NE decided to add an extra surprise feature for Halloween...Horror News Items...News reports based on classic horror movies!! It was a very fun & exciting thing for me as I made few of them & sent them to Uncle Ozma but later couldn't able to manage time to hear them out in NEW. So, if NE permits then this time I'd like to share them here in HDC...cause those things were total fun!
Kudos to Newb for this fantastic thread...a truly deserved tribute to NEW radio...the online radio channel that really made a great new way for us to enjoy the "Halloween" at even distant parts of the world. We'll miss it badly.

A fire that ripped through a famous dance academy in Freiburg, Germany last night is being treated as suspicious.
It took 50 firefighters near about 20 minutes to contain the blaze to the three-stores dance Academy building.
The academy building was severely damaged but there is no human causality yet discovered.
A Police spokesperson said as there is no sign of any academy officials dead or alive, the fire was being treated as suspicious. Though most of the students remain unharmed from the heavy blaze as they were attending at a theater while the fire erupted & spread the whole dance academy building but some of them claimed one of the newly enrolled students, named Suzy Bannion wasn't with them last night & now reported missing by them. The Police are now looking for her whereabouts.
A crime scene guard will be in place until Arson and Explosive Squad detectives examine the scene this morning.
Police are appealing for anyone with any information about the fire to contact with them soon.

We're sorry to interrupt this program to announce a very tragic but mysterious accident. The body of the eight-year-old Rhoda Penmark has been pulled from the Fern Country Bay early this noon. The father of the deceased, Col. Kenneth Penmark identified the body. The local authority is quite baffled at the moment as this is the 2nd Fern School drowning that happened within a week. As we reported, few days ago another eight-year-old, named Claude Daigle was accidentally drowned on the same place on their annual picnic of the Fern Country Day school.
It's a mystery how or what made both the children got on the abandoned pier on the Fern property that the students had been forbidden to play near or on it. Both the bodies were found off the end of the landing, wedged among the piling.
A Police spokesperson said they are now suspecting that there may be a connection between these 2 tragic accidents. They are waiting for the full recovery of the deceased Rhoda Penmarks mother Christine Bravo Penmark who has been admitted into the local hospital just three days ago after making an apparent attempt of suicide. The police are expecting to get some answers from her on these tragic & mysterious drowning of 2 children as soon as the doctors authorized them to question Mrs. Penmark about the mysterious death of the 2 children.
More news of this tragic affair is expected momentarily.

MichaelMyer, you went and posted here, and got me reading Lee's webpages, checking out his artwork, listening to Welcome to Weirdsville, reading about Lee and the internet radio stream and Halloween tradition; and went and ruined a perfectly shallow and incorrect view I had of Neverending. You'd think after 44 yrs, I'd know better.
Sorry to hear about the 5/2012 catastrophic computer failure, and losing irreplaceable material. I know how that feels first hand, more times than I'd like. For me, starting in 2nd grade I started drawing Godzilla comics, simple original stories and monsters. By 5th grade I had a stack of 52 pages of monster comics and drawings. Then in 1980 we moved, and I had put them in a brown Jewel grocery bag, which I thought was mixed in with that haphazard pack-rat collection of boxes and bags in a 20x30 basement. I looked for my comics for years and never found them. Then in high school, had my warped "Grandma Killer" comics lost by a friend who borrowed them. Lost one of my favorite 4-track tapes on which I recorded my original electronica music compositions from 15 yrs back. Then last week I bought a 8-track player from the Thrift store to play a 25 yr old 8-track of a very rare folk group, to finally record digitally, and discovered it's missing.
Seems God, or whatever else, takes these things from us from time-to-time. Could be the outerspace beings like our material so much they take it. Maybe it's just our field has to be tilled from time-to-time for us to look at new things, discover new perspectives, become a part of new things, and start creating new material and venues.
I think many of us need some new NeverendingWonder magic to share.
I have some original 'scary' electronic music I recorded. And for my radio show I sound engineered some sequences using the Halloween theme, King Kong and Godzilla clips and music, and mixed in many Godzilla film sound clips into the Blue Oyster Cult song Godzilla. In time for Halloween, I need to create a horror film show for my show. And it's got to be good, and it's going to take a lot of work. I have some original material I'd love to contribute.
I bet many of our HDC group has material (digital) we could send you that you could create a "NeverendingWonder HDC Friends" show that you could broadcast Halloween! These days most of us have a PC mic and free sound recording programs (I could give simple instructions for anyone who needs it). For those interested we could all record a short Halloween message sound clip (Wave or MP3) -- just a 'hello' from (use your HDC name), maybe in a scary voice, or tell your favorite ghost story, or tell a favorite Halloween recollection, submit a scary song, offer some Halloween requests, and the like.
We have the perfect amount of time to put this together. Anybody down for this? I think this would be a blast! What do you say, Lee?

I don't even have a mic any more, nor a computer capable of doing audio work nor streaming.
I say it's a great project for somebody else to to spearhead- perhaps yourself! Many members of this forum did indeed record Halloween greetings. but they were all lost in the big crash.
The last Halloween Extravaganza I even had people write Halloween news items- events from horror films reported as if they were news. There were some great ones!
These days my time is taken up writing (see books forum for my latest announcement) and looking for work. This last is becoming quite urgent. I simply don't have the time nor resources - either monetarily or technologically- to put into more broadcasts.
On top of that- NeverEndingWonder was something I put eleven years of my life into. It drew upon a lifetime of audio collecting, specializing in the odd, unusual, rare, hard to find, off the wwall, off beat and downright bizarre offerings. Without exaggeration, I can honestly say there was nothing else like it in existence. The Halloween Extravaganzas were listened to by hundreds of people every year. Having done that, I just don't want to do anything less than that. And I can't. So, I'd rather remember that part of my life with fondness and leave it at that.
I really appreciate your kind words, and the time you took to check out my websites.
Not to pour salt in your wounds, Sculpt......but you missed out on a very special time here at HDC. NEW radio was a big part of this forum...not just on Halloween but for many other things we had going. It would never be quite the same without Lee's personality behind it. Not to mention the forum itself....it use to be teeming with activity....he'll it was more like a chat room. Blame Facebook and tweeter I guess.

Yes, I am sorry I missed a lot of that stuff. Sorry you're without the technology, funds and time for a new Halloween show. (I'm looking for a job myself.) Maybe things may change a lot between now and Halloween. I do a weekly 2 hr radio show, called Headphone Trips, every Friday evening (Saturday 12-2AM) at our community radio station WDBX, which has a live stream (WDBX.org (http://www.wdbx.org/)). And I also have been running sound for the last couple plays preformed by our local community playhouse (The Stage Company (http://www.stagecompany.org/content/box-office)). I definitely have the tech (recording equipment & PC programs) to put a HDC Friends Halloween Show together. I don't have my own live internet stream, of course. If we put something together, is that something you could put on the Welcome to Weirdsville internet radio stream, Lee? Or what might you suggest?

Welcome to Weirdsville is an orphan station. It's a bunch of mp3 files uploaded to a remote server set on shuffle. I haven't paid for it in years, and don't possess the ability to login, upload or delete files, or modify it in any way. It's only due to the streamhost's lack of oversight that it remains on the air at all.
Perhaps doing a podcast would be easier to put together. Never done one myself- fortunato and Ferox are the resident experts in that area.

Though I haven't posted any updates lately, that doesn't mean there hasn't been activity going on... underground. Welcome To Weirdsville Radio - Halloween Weirdness has been writing and expanding, taking on a more ominous tone, like a plague of virulent, disease ridden rats. New items added to the playlist recently:
Two atmospheric mood pieces by Verne Langdon; Music for Magicians and the double release The Phantom of the Organ/Vampyre at the Harpsichord.
Vic Mizzy's other creepy soundtrack for The Night Walker, Basil Kurchin's evocative Abominable Dr. Phibes soundtrack, music and dialogue snippets from Texas Chainsaw Massacre I & II, and a smattering of Akira Ifukube's powerful scores for Japanese Kaiju films like the original Gojira, Gidorah the Three Headed Monster, Gidorah Vs. Godzilla and more!
Two more of Kenyon Hopkins collaborations with the Creed Taylor Orchestra- Shock Music in Hifi and Panic, Son of Shock!
More spooky sounds from Midnight Syndicate with their 13th Hour release.
Rick Moranis, Ellen Greene and Levi Stubbs in the Little Shop of Horrors soundtrack.
Songs in the Key of X - songs suggested by the X-Files, with numbers from Elvis Costello, Nick Cave, Soul Coughing, Danzig and more.
A rare item from the 1970s- Black Mass Lucifer by Mort Garson; spooky electronic soundscapes.
Canada's The Creepshow sneaks onstage, as does modern favorites the themes to American Horror Story and The Walking Dead.
Listener favorite Christopher Walken's reading of The Raven spooks us all.
Two artists no Halloween station would be complete without join decadence: Alice Cooper and David Bowie, as well as individual offerings from Johnny Cash, Frank Sinatra, The Battlefield Band, Donovan, Jenny DeVivo, Rumors of the Big Wave, Santana, Natalie Merchant and oh so much more...
I can say without a touch of hype, Welcome To Weirdsville Radio is by far the most unique and entertaining Halloween station on the air. Much of what you hear here you won't find anywhere else.
And let me tell you... THE MADNESS HAS JUST BEGUN! Stay Tuned!

Fiendish fans and fangulous friends, Welcome to Weirdsville Radio - Halloween Weirdness All Year Long continues to spread its infection like a virulent case of the bubonic plague. Recent additions to the playlist are wrapping the station in a shroud of spooky atmospherics. Included:
Frankie Stein and His Ghouls - ALL FIVE of the infamous mid-60s albums of monster dance music mixed with horrorific sound effects.
Three more of Nox Arcana's Gothic inspired sound poems, including Necronomicon, Darklore Manor and Transylvania.
Goblin, the revered band that provided the soundtracks to Dario Argento's best films, makes a major appearance with selections from Suspiria, Tenebre, Profundo Rosso, Phenomina, Patrick, Wampyre, and more!
The underappreciated Ronald Stein, composer of multitudes of low budget horror film scores, bursts upon the scene with selections from The Haunted Palace, The Premature Burial, Last Woman on Earth, Spider Baby, Dementia 13 and others!
Ennio Morricone's haunting score to Exorcist II: The Heretic.
In a World's Hallow's Eve album.
Also, from the mid-60s, when albums of experimental electronic music could be marketed as kiddie Halloween albums, we have Gershon Kingsley's Ghostly Sounds and Music for Monsters, whose unfortunate theremin player's identity seems to have been lost to eternity.
From 1969 we have the beloved Poe Through a Glass Prism album of Edgar Allen Poe poetry set to psychedelic rock music.
From 1968, Coven's infamous Witchcraft Destroys Minds and Reaps Souls album.
More Zacherley, with some Shock Theater audio bits and his Dead Man's Ball album.
I don't know why, but Timothy Leary's crazy Tune In, Turn On, Drop Out album portraying a guided acid trip has always seemed Halloweenish to me- watch out, it'll sneak up on you!
Hell Yeah! we've got HorrorPops, with their Hell Yeah! album!
Listen carefully and you'll hear the strangest cover of Purple People Eater, by none other than Judy Garland!
All that, and much much more is waiting for you.... Just tune in IF YOU DARE!

What's been happening at the haunted slum housing Welcome to Weirdsville Radio? Well, lots and lots, by little ghoulies.
57 new sound bites added from horror movies and TV shows.
23 new horror movie trailers from the classic to the crappy!
On the soundtrack scene, we have Dracula- Classic Horror Film Scores from Hammer Films(JUST FOR YOU HAMMERFAN!), the complete scores to A Nightmare on Elm Street and A Nightmare on Elm Street 2 Freddy's Revenge, and Krzysztof Komeda's spoooky soundtrack to Rosemary's Baby.
Thrown into the mix are several creepy Pink Floyd songs, a splattering of Roky Erickson, and by request from crazy listener Gloomy Gus, 2 complete albums from Dan Blakeslee.

What's happening over at the haunted studio? Ghosts and werewolves are prowling the premises, spooking the passers by. In honor of Spooky Soozan, we've upped the spookiness factor by adding more Midnight Syndicate; their Dead Matter album, as well as Gothica's Night Thoughts CD... it just chills you to the bone.
The ghosties have been spinning several notable soundtracks:
The Exorcist with its experimental soundscapes.
John Carpenter's The Fog.
The prolific Tangerine Dream's lush Near Dark soundtrack.
Harry Manfredini's iconic Friday the 13th soundtrack.
Two of Danny Elfman's best, yet radically different soundtracks: Nightbreed and Sleepy Hollow, for loyal listener Avinesh!
And just to keep things interesting:
The infamous 1969 release Seduction Through Witchcraft, by the "Official Witch of Los Angeles" Louise Huebner, with electronic soundscapes by Ruth White.
And for long time listener Christopher Roth, 18 tracks of werewolf tunes, from the Creepy Creatures series!

What two things do Eraserhead and Hush...Hush, Sweet Charlotte have in common? They both contain a scene with a head rolling across the floor and they've both had their soundtracks added to the spooky soundscape of Welcome to Weirdsville Radio!
The electronic creepiness and joyful funhouse organ snippets created by David Lynch and Alan Splet evoke nothing less than a demented nightmare, which of course describes the movie perfectly. Frank DeVol's lush and florid melodies in the Hush...Hush, Sweet Charlotte evoke the Southern Gothic feel of the Bette Davis thriller. Two very different soundtracks, but both very effective in their own ways.
The ghosties also discovered a hidden cache of old movie trailers hidden in a back closet, so now Bloodbath in the House of Death, Dorm That Dripped Blood, and Manic Cop 2 advertisements will assault your ears, along with selections from A Nightmare on Elm Street 2, 3, 4 and 5 soundtracks.

The ghoulies in the studio have been busily filling a few holes in the playlist, adding songs no Halloween station would be complete without. Things like Michael Sembello's Maniac, Edgar Winter's Frankenstein, Bela Lugosi's Dead by Bauhaus, The Green Slime, Ballad of the Hip Death Goddess by The Ultimate Spinach, Whatever Happened to Eddie by Eddie and the Monsters (that's Butch Patrick, better known as Eddie Munster), more Screamin' Jay Hawkins, everything Bette Davis sang in Whatever Happened to Baby Jane? (and what could be more frightening than Bette Davis singing?), Vampira by Bobby Bare, The Goddamn Gallows, and no less than ten tracks of rock & horror by the only horrorific rock star to ever run for parliament, Screaming Lord Sutch himself!

Ygor's been binge watching Twin Peaks ever since he found out it's coming back next year, so he demanded we add add Angelo Badalamenti's soundtracks to Twin Peaks, seasons one and two to the mix, and just to be nice, we threw in Fire Walk With Me as well, and then snuck in a bunch of creepy and scary TV theme songs as well- Dexter, Six Feet Under, Tales From the Crypt, Tales From the Dark Side, Millennium, Quantum Leap, V the Series, Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea, Lost in Space, Land of the Giants, Firefly, Time Tunnel, Masters of Horror and a few others.
When she saw this Vampira demanded equal time so she added a bunch of theremin music, just to prove that everything sounds spooky when played on a theremin. We've added BOTH of Clara Rockmore's albums, Lydia Kavina's album, and even a cover of Black Magic Woman played on the theremin.
When he saw all this Frankenstein's Monster whined that he just wanted to rock out, so he added CALABRESE (https://www.facebook.com/Calabrese666)'s Traveling Vampire Show, and Canadian psychobilly band The Creepshow (https://www.facebook.com/TheCreepshowOfficial)'s Run for Your Life.
And to cap it all off, we have a bonafide EXCLUSIVE track from spoken word artists Astro Al! If you want to hear Dracula's Castle 2014, the is the only place in the universe you can!
And on a final note, we've been tweaking the playlist again, since the shuffle wants to play an inordinate amount of Midnight Syndicate, Vic Mizzy and Kenyon Hopkins, so we put a selection of Welcome to Weirdsville's Favorite Tunes, some of the all time Halloween hits, in heavy rotation to try and balance things out. Tune in and tell us what you think!

That makes me kinda sad. That was a great part of halloween.
Also candy.
And there's a wedding anniversary in there somewhere.

I know. I always looked forward to Lee's marathon. Always heard some cool music.
How many years is it now for you and Rayne? I remember when you met.

11-ish years altogether. She's the reason I came to HDC.

Yep, I've been here since 2004. I also remember when she was pregnant with Ash.

I keep trying to get neverending to come back here and update everyone but he won't do it. It makes no sense to boycott HDC *after* V is banned. ::sad::

I like Neverending......but he is a stubborn old coot.....so I wouldn't be wasting my time.
I actually thing V should come back as well
But don't count on that either

I am losing my mind listening to Neverending..or is it Welcome to Weirdsville? Whichever it is, It's amazing. Now I don't have to rummage through cd's and computer files to find my October soundtrack, and though I don't imagine I will listen this obsessively after Halloween, I know I will tune in very often.
So, in appreciation of the greatness of the Neverending broadcast, and to Newb for creating this thread, and to Hammerfan for sharing the link and drawing me in,... I submit this.
Jessica Harper, Old Souls, written by Paul Williams for the film The Phantom of the Paradise.

This scene, with Phoenix alone on stage, and in the spotlight. She looks like a doll floating through darkness in a ball of light. God, I wanna watch this right now.

My first listen was for about an hour. I kept having glitches, almost like a record skipping. It increased the atmosphere of the station. Really enjoyed it.
It's the first day of Autumn. What better time than to bump this thread.
Sure Mr. Cranky left us for Facebook but that is no reason to forget his accomplishments in getting us "In The Mood".
To Neverending.......gone but not forgotten.
