Now, this is more like it. I saw "Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter" on Saturday, and thought it was a wonderful, fun, tongue-in-cheek action horror fantasy. I cannot recommend the film highly enough. It is a hoot. I do think that some of the younger demographic are not "getting the joke" based on comments I have heard; a lot of this may go over the head of the viewer. Again, so see it, and I hope you like it as much as I do.

I did read the book, which was really interesting but it would have made a grim movie translated directly. The film retools the story and changes a lot, making the story into a "fun ride" instead of a "grim ride."

The whole thing is played with a straight face. It's the best action/horror flick since "Sleepy Hollow," I think, and just because the humor is handled so subtly, I feel it is much more effective than "Army of Darkness." AOD is funny, of course, but so goofball that the viewer never gets out of the crude 3 Stooges mentality. "Abraham Lincoln" features jokes that are subtle, refined and sophisticated.

It also helps to know a little bit about the actual Abraham Lincoln's real life, as well as the Civil War and the general political climate of that time...the viewer is rewarded for being somewhat literate.

Again, I cannot recommend this more highly. Here's my imdb review:

Now I REALLY want to see it! I may just go by myself this weekend.

And, yeah, I'm sorry for building it up this way, because how can it meet your expectations with such a glowing review. My own reaction is probably better because I knew nothing going into the movie, and I expected something mediocre and boring. So a part of my reaction is fueled by the surprise that it was actually good.

Still, a number of people I have heard from think that the movie is witty and funny, probably its main strength and where the "soul" of the movie is.
