Psychologicl Horror/Thrillers

Hi guys,
I'm new to the forum so please be gentle. Still trying to navigate my way around. I've read through some of the top 100 threads and other threads in the general forum section and I am sure this question has already been asked before.

I am looking for really powerful lasting psychological horrors/thrillers to watch.

Problem is, most of the "most shocking" films are mainly visually graphic and not psychologically haunting if you get me.

Rec 1 + 2 are probably the best horrors i've ever seen.

Another film that really hit me hard was Martyrs. Took me a few days to get over that one lol

I also enjoy "religious horror" films like - Constantine, Exorcist, Exorcism of Emily Rose.

Anything Scary that perverts relgion.

Anyway hopefully some of you can give me some good recommendations.

Does the time period in which the film was released matter?

Terry Gilliam's BRAZIL might appeal to your tastes, along with Robert Aldrich's WHATEVER HAPPENED TO BABY JANE. Kubrick's THE SHINING struck me as psychologically bent. The first WICKER MAN, perhaps. No sense bringing up PSYCHO, I'm sure, but I'd be remiss if I didn't mention Roger Corman's THE PIT AND THE PENDULUM and TALES OF TERROR.

Well, if you haven't seen The Omen, that would be a great religious horror movie. Umm... try Altered States, Hush, Hush Sweet Charlotee, The Ninth Gate, Phantoms, The Last Exorcism, The Devil's Advocate, The Devil Inside, The Innocents, The Legend of Hell House, The House of the Devil, The Innkeepers, Identity, Session 9, Jacob's Ladder, Exorcismus, The Changeling, In the Mouth of Madness, eXistenZ, The Machinist, The Haunting (1963 version), Insidious, Event Horizon. Hell, that's all I can think of.

Hi guys,
Thanks for the replies.
A lot of movies in there that i'll try and get through, some of which i've seen already.
I must mention that I thought Insidious was such a let down of a film. It had all the elements of a great horror film until it turned completely jim henson at the end. It was honestly like a cross between beetlejuice and the phantom menace.
Paranormal activity films were amazing imo, it only seems to be people that can relate 100% to them and believe that they could be real that seem to get any effect from them.
Most people dismiss those films but I enjoyed them.
I'm not so keen on older films that look really dated but I will definitely check some of them out, been meaning to get rosemary's baby for ages now.
