Guillermo del Toro has signed on to produce and present Reel FX's "Day of the Dead," a CG-animated film to be directed by Jorge R. Gutierrez.
Gutierrez, whose credits include "El Tigre" and "The Adventures of Manny Rivera," is writing the script with Doug Langdale. The "Romeo and Juliet" romance is set against a Mexican "Day of the Dead" backdrop.
Music will play a large part in the film; A-list recording artists may be reworking iconic songs.
This marks Del Toro's first project set in Mexico since 1993's "Cronos." The filmmakers states:
"I have admired Jorge's work for a long time. He has a unique aesthetic and sense of humor. 'Day of the Dead' offers a perfect opportunity for his sensibilities to shine. This is a colorful, vibrant, vital fable that utilizes the animation medium in an incredible way. The object of the tale is not only to talk about life but to dazzle us -- jolt us -- into living to the fullest."
Chatrone, Inc. is producing with Reel FX.
"Day of the Dead" is a working title; the film is slated for a Fall 2014 release.
