View Full Version : To Aspiring Genre Artists...

This was noted in the New Member section, but it's worth repeating.

There are a lot of aspiring filmmakers, authors etc. that come here to promote their work. There are plenty of members here who are genuinely interested in seeing what they have to offer, and will give praise and/or constructive criticism. However, when the artist in question pretends to be a third party who discovered this "cool work", there are people here (including myself) who find this approach annoying and, frankly, kind of insulting. It's feels like the pitch of a con man to a room of what he feels are ignorant rubes.

So, please, PLEASE, be honest about who you are and what you're pitching. As I said, there are plenty who are interested in new material, and would love to see what you have to offer.

I, for one, will not look at the film if that's how it is presented. Childish? Perhaps. But, that's how much it annoys me.

Thank you, Wicker, for posting this.

I dont really mind so much, hate the shit with limited or no detail, but the rest of 'em I will watch regardless.... It's often kids or people who are limited by ability or budget but want to generate some buzz about what they've done. Maybe its not presented in the smartest way or its presented in a patronising manner, but alot of these people are still imagining themselves to be the next youtube sensation or for hollywood to pluck them up and give them $100 million to throw at a film. The reality is the best they'll probably get is a bunch of cunts on youtube trolling them, so usually, clicking their links and trying to say something positive doesnt really bother me.... The people with a little money, talent and intelligence behind them, who never contribute to the forum beyond what they can get out of it piss me off way more.

I don't mind if people who contribute to the forum promote their wares.

What annoys me is people who join up with the sole intent of promoting their blog/film/book etc and never contribute anything to the forum beyond that.

Forums are meant to be communities, and I think the point of this forum is for a community to primarily discuss horror-related things. Of course, there is a lot of non-horror related discussion here too, but that is ok if it is between active members who have joined primarily through their interest in horror.

Another forum that I am a member of (a tech-related forum) doesn't allow people to post in the non-tech related boards until they have been a member for a while and posted in the tech-related forums. I think this is a good idea, because it keeps the membership to people who are interested in the primary purpose of the forum.

So, I think members would be much more receptive to people who have something to advertise if they proved themselves as valuable members of the community first. You know, give something to the community before you expect the community to support you. Otherwise it is just spam.

You guys are right; it is pretty annoying when someone joins up and does nothing beyond promoting their work. I just find the 'con game' approach especially irritating.

I don't even mind new members who join just to promote their work or wares, as long as it's on topic.

But, as Wicker says. it's annoying when they pretend they're just some random person who just stumbled upon this amazing discovery, and they just had to join to tell us all about it... or even worse, pretend they're seeking information on something they just discovered. It's just sad that they think they're the only person who has thought of this approach.

To be honest though, what annoys me even more are the kids that have an assignment for school that's horror related, and they have no interest in horror, so they come here and ask us to do their homework for them.

Yeah, I hate that too. I wonder if their professors tell them to do that. It does seem like cheating.

Kids today are spoiled with their internet.:p

So, I was looking around for horror stuff, since I love horror and shit, and I stumbled on this page: http://www.amazon.com/Garrett-Cook/e/B002BME326/ref=ntt_athr_dp_pel_1 and I was like "WHAT THE WHAT?" I love this guy's work and I think he's totally sexy. Have you ever heard of him? He rocks! -Sincerely, a Pretty Girl
