View Full Version : HDC Looks Back...

I have been reading up some online articles from people remembering fondly about their favorite films from the past, and how those made them nostalgic.

Example - http://www.denofgeek.com/movies/957175/looking_back_at_the_neverending_story.html

And I thought of this idea.

Since these forums were first made (back in 2003 I reckon), we have had countless members tell us about their favorite horror films.

Top 10 lists followed, then came the Top 100 Stickys, "Recommends" threads, etc.

We have had dozens of lists and similar stuff, but we never had a particular thread in which members remembered back to their favorite horror films and why they liked them, specially when they watched them for the very first time (either at home on VHS, LD, DVD, or at theaters and drive-ins).

The idea is simple. Someone names a popular horror film from yesteryears, and others will reminiscence of the very first time they watched it, and the feeling/thoughts/memories it left with them, cultural impact in their prime, and why they feel that it is still a favorite, or not, and their likes/dislikes for the same.

1) No, not really. 10 years ago maybe.

2) Nope.

3) Didn't do shit for me.

4) 1 time. It's still just a plain slasher with the mask being the only thing to remember.

5) Overrated. Or outdone might be a better choice of word.

1) Do you remember when you first watched it?

When I was very young. Probably a bit older than the kids attended by Laurie in the movie. Which was a really bad idea...

2) Did you get any feedback (from friends or media) prior to watching it?

Not really. Horror movies were kind of hush hush back then. I would pick up on names like Halloween, Nightmare on Elm Street, and Friday the 13th. They were all off limits to normal viewing. Kind of like Playboy or something of that nature. If you were able to somehow stay up late at night and watch a cut version, which was still scary to a young viewer, it was like finding treasure.

3) How was the viewing experience? How did it affect you?

Very scary. So scary that I wish that I did not watch the movie. The pretty babysitter, small middle of America town that is unaffected by big city crime, cute girls joking around, and the playful holiday. All that is ruined by the coming of the unstoppable boogeyman. All you are left with at the end is the music and breathing which scared me to death. I'm pretty sure when that scene started I turned the TV off as fast as possible (no remote back then either) and hid under the sheets.

4) How many times have you rewatched it? Memories? Does it still hold good even today for you?

Still the perfect horror film. I've watched it a ton of times. It never should have been remade. It's still scary but not as much. But that's normal. You get used to things the more times you watch or do something.

5) Anything else you wish to share.

Anyone who hasn't watched this film should totally check it out.

1. Can't really remember. But young enough that horror movies still scared me.

2. No

3. Of everything i remember the opening scene sticking with me the most. For some reason that really freaked me out.

4. Too many times to count. I still watch it every Halloween. I find new reasons to love it every time i watch it.

5. When i watch it, it seems so simple to me but so well done and generally scary at the same time. It is definitely a movie every horror fan needs to see.

I love this idea, V.

1) Do you remember when you first watched it?
Yes, very well. I had some friends staying over for my birthday party; I must have been either 8 or 9. My parents had it on VHS, and I they let us watch it (which was huge for me, because they had always been kind of strict when it came to what I watched). We all sat around the TV with popcorn and root beer, totally enthralled.

2) Did you get any feedback (from friends or media) prior to watching it?
Not really, or at least nothing beyond just being aware of its presence in pop-culture.

3) How was the viewing experience? How did it affect you?
Yes, it was thrilling. The cassette stayed in my room after that.

4) How many times have you rewatched it? Memories? Does it still hold good even today for you?
Of course. I've seen it countless times, and it never loses its strength.

5) Anything else you wish to share.
Not sure. So many people have surely had a similar experience with this film. There's a reason it's gone down as a canonical horror touchstone.

Vikings are clearly not bothered by Michael Myers. :D

-----

1) Do you remember when you first watched it?

About 20 years ago, on VHS. I was a young and hungry horror fan and Halloween was eluding me for quite some time. In fact, I watched Friday the 13th before it and thought that was the first slasher for awhile! But I finally got my hands on a copy and wow... the charm of the grainy and sharp picture quality of VHS, and Carpenter's masterpiece!

2) Did you get any feedback (from friends or media) prior to watching it?

None. I had read someplace that there was a film called Halloween and it was supposed to be a really scary slasher, and I was in love with slashers at that time!

3) How was the viewing experience? How did it affect you?

Right from the opening credits (with that fantastic score) to the finale, it was an experience worth remembering. The town, the people, Michael's childhood, the stalking, the festival of Halloween, Donald Pleasance, PJ Soles and Jamie Lee. And that background score by Carpenter! Can't have enough of it. The scene of Michael getting up behind Laurie's vision is enough to give anyone alarming goose pimples, and I was no exception. A masterpiece indeed.

4) How many times have you rewatched it? Memories? Does it still hold good even today for you?

Many times. The second time, me and my friends decided to have a VHS party (of only slashers). We picked 3 films (don't exactly remember the other two, maybe it was The Burning and A Nightmare on Elm Street) on a holiday weekend and had a real blast! After that, maybe 2-3 more times on VHS before a long period of lull till I bought the DVD. Plenty of times since then. Watched it with my wife not too long ago and she was scared stiff. Glad to say it still holds it's own, and has aged pretty gracefully.

5) Anything else you wish to share.

I didn't know anything about Halloween until about 7-8 years ago. Till then it was just another successful slasher film for me. The facts that Carpenter made it on a budget, it became everyone's favorite cult classic in a short time, and people watch it on Halloween, Michael Myers' popularity, the "Boogeyman" tag, all this was revealed to me when I did research on the film. I am glad to say that Halloween will always be the ultimate milestone in slashers - not many makers today can boast of making any film/short anywhere near or close to this film. No wonder Carpenter is a god amongst horror fans the world over.

And of course, why William Shatner's mask will always be a very sought-after collectible.

*tips hat*

1) I must have first seen Halloween when I was quite young - I remember that it was on TV, and an edited for TV version. I am guessing around 10-12?

2) I had heard that it was a scary film :D

3) I remember finding it quite scary but not the most scary film I had seen to date.

4) I soon after got to see it on VHS in its full form, which I found no more scary than the edited-for-TV version. I have since watched it once or twice more (on DVD).

5) I do think it is a step up on most of the slashers, and I do like the way it portrays the female lead as strong and intelligent, as opposed to a lot of slashers.

It was an entertaining film and I enjoyed it, although it's still not one of my favourites.

4) How many times have you rewatched it? Memories? Does it still hold good even today for you?

1) Do you remember when you first watched it?

Few years back...most probably on 2008.

2) Did you get any feedback (from friends or media) prior to watching it?

Plenty! After becoming member on different online horror movie forum/community (Including HDC), I found HALLOWEEN on top 10 in every list & recommendation thread and it made me highly curious about it as my first love into horror was slasher films particularly after watching TCM & FT13 part 2. And specially whenever you guys here discussed about the legacy of Michael I have gradually become a fan of his stories before even watching them properly.

3) How was the viewing experience? How did it affect you?

Oh, man! It gave me a pretty hard time to track down & finally watched it for the very first time. Back on 2006, when I passionately started watching horror films then I used to rely on our local dvd stores where they sells pirated dvds. The most strange & frustrating thing was JC's HALLOWEEN was totally unavailable here back at that time! There wasn't any single dvd store left in Dhaka where I didn't look for HALLOWEEN (1978) & original TCM. And I couldn't find it anywhere. It was highly frustrating & annoying but as I was becoming sucker for horror films I took a very brave & risky effort (as my friends told me here in compare to any movie lover in BD)...I made an effort to buy it on e-bay by sending dollars in CASH via regular mail! My first effort went in vain as the seller (from Canada) failed to send it properly. Then I did the same thing with another seller (Stuart, UK) and finally got the double disc dvd in my hand after waiting for it like years!! The feeling was like a long waited huge victory or meeting with someone very special who you thought lost forever.

4) How many times have you rewatched it? Memories? Does it still hold good even today for you?

Anyway, then one fine night after having a nice dinner I came into my roof top little studio apartment & turn off the lights and played the dvd...I just liked it as I had a huge expectation. But I gradually become a great fan of it after watching multiple times in later years on special occasions.

5) Anything else you wish to share.

IMO: JC's HALLOWEEN is like an all time lovable fairy tale for Slasher genre that none can deny. Like THE HAUNTING (1963) for haunted house films, THE EXORCIST for exorcism/demonic possession genre, HALLOWEEN (1978) can be treated as holy book for today's any new/future Slasher film maker.

Do you remember when you first watched it?

I have vague memories of watching it when I was very young, maybe around 9, possibly younger.

How was the viewing experience? How did it affect you?

My strongest memory is of how dark the film was, certain scenes it was hard for me to see what was actually happening.... The music stood out to me too. I think, at least for me, watching horror at a young age, its the music that really grabs hold of you and draws you in.

How many times have you rewatched it? Memories? Does it still hold good even today for you?

Like most I've watched it countless times since. I think as a viewing experience it peaked for me as a teen. Today, I still view it as one of the best horror films out there, its just hard for any film to really beat the experience you have of watching these types of movies with friends in your teens.

Do you remember when you first watched it?

I was about 12 or 13 and me and a friend had been watching a bunch of horror movies each weekend working through stuff like the Friday The 13th and Nightmare on Elm Street flicks. Always heard about it and read about it in magazines like Fangoria but never could lay my hands on it. A new video store opened in town and they had a section of ancient tapes you could hire for $2 and Halloween was in there. I nervously took it up to the counter hoping they'd let me rent it because a lot of places were strict with the age restrictions on tapes. They let me rent it and that was the place I went to from then on to rent more dubious titles.

How was the viewing experience? How did it affect you?

I remember it being one of the first horror films to creep me out most notably the opening scene shot though the eyes of the mask and the shots of Myers creeping around in the background. Most of the previous horror films I'd watched were fairly comical but Halloween was straight up errie to me. I watched it off the old Media tape (which I still own) and it was quite murky and dark which added to this effect. I thought it was great and it stood out to me as being stylistically different from a lot of the other horror films I'd seen especially the music and innovative shots. The title sequence still remains on of my favourites.

How many times have you rewatched it? Memories? Does it still hold good even today for you?

It's a film I haven't watched a lot of times compared to other older horror films because the tape was so hard to come by over here. That tape disappeared from that store probably eaten by someone's hungry VCR before I got to rent it again or dub a copy. Caught it again a few times since DVDs came onto the scene and it holds up well and along with The Thing is Carpenter's best work. Halloween is a film I hold in high regard and discussing it here has reminded me I should watch it again.

Anything else you wish to share.

Whether or not it's the true "original" slasher film is debatable but it's definitely the first iconic one. The sequel is great too and I agree with newb's sentiments of Jamie Lee Curtis being smoking fucking hot :D

To tell you the truth, I really cannot remember. I was around 10 or 12, so that was up to nearly 30 years ago :(

What I do remember is that it didn't really make that much of a difference to the film. What probably was skipped were shots of blood and gore. All the scares were still there.

I don't know how much shorter it would have been, because there were advertisements during the movie. But it would not have been much shorter - most probably just a few minutes.

Australian TV used to show a lot of modified-for-tv versions of movies. I remember when Jaws first came on TV, some of the cuts included when the swimmer's amputated leg sank to the bottom of the ocean - the very last few frames when the top of the amutated leg was visible was cut. Also when Quint expired blood out of his mouth was cut.

These days, these scenes would not be cut. The movie would be shown a bit later instead.

I would have been 9 years old when it came out, and wasn't allowed to go see it. I remember my parents finally allowing me to see an edited version on TV. No scenes of Michael stabbing, no sex scene, no pot scene, and no profanity. I can't remember when I finally got to see the whole thing, but it certainly was a welcome sight.

I still love the film, and don't think it's aged badly. Also agree with others about the fantastic soundtrack.

Isn't the TV cut actually longer than the theatrical version? I remember reading somewhere that it had some extended scenes to lengthen it's running time for the 2 hour time slot for films screened on network TV and allowed for the cuts made. Pretty sure we'd get a lot of the censored TV versions from the States like the infamous "Mellonfarmers" Repo Man print Alex Cox devised.

Forgot to mention this is a great thread... looking forward to discussing more films :)

Ditto. The double disc version that I have includes Theatrical release in 1 disc & the TV version on the other one. I saw the TV version only 1 time. As far I remember there's 2 added scene in TV version: In one scene Dr. Sam Loomis is talking with someone in the institution about Michael but I forget about the other one...need to check it out again!:o

There was a scene when Linda visited Laurie and borrowed her blouse. She complained that the creepy guy in the station wagon had followed her.

The other scenes were a hearing regarding Michael when Dr. Loomis urged the people in charge to put Michael in a maximum security hospital, and then had one final meeting with a silent Michael. After Michael broke out, Dr. Loomis visited Michael's room and the word 'sister' was written across the wall.

I would guess I saw the TV version when I was very young unsurprisingly one halloween-I recorded it and rewatched it many times I've lost count. It was years before I saw Halloween 2 though. One of the earliest horror movies I ever watched-set me up to stay up late and record on blank vhs's many horror films from then on-spending any pocket money on blank vhs' but couldn't do this every week. They were usually on tv friday or saturday evenings or middle of the night in the weekedays) and eventually my parents kept all the tapes and recorded non horror films usually westerns that my dad loved over the horror. Luckily mates would have tapes of them. This was all in my pre-teens though things changed then.

1) Do you remember when you first watched it?
Honestly, I can't remember if I saw it in the theater or on VHS. It came out in 1982, which is the year I went into the Air Force. So, the latter part of '82 and the beginning of '83 was all training, with very little contact with the outside world.

Good film and very entertaining but not that scary for the most part...I don't really regard as it as a "horror" film to be honest...supernatural mystery really.

Not rewatched it since, but plan to go back to it soon.

I know a lot of people say that Spielberg had a hand in directing at least some of this rather than Tobe Hooper. I can see what they mean as it does have more of the look of a Spielberg film than a Hooper film (budget is probably one of the main reasons). Fun fact: Tobe Hooper was offered by Spielberg to direct a sci-fi horror film, Night Skies. He turned it down, Spielberg decided to direct it himself, dropped the horror angle and re-jigged the plot and now we have E.T.

I watched it on HBO, so it must have been 1983. It was PG, so I was allowed to watch it in full.

I'm still very creeped out by the toy clown and the giant dead tree (great judgment there, keeping a dead tree in the backyard so it can fall into the house during the first big storm:rolleyes:). I still can't believe they got away with a PG rating after Marty ripped his face off.

I still enjoy the film a great deal.

1. Not specifically, but I do remember seeing it here and there on TV when I was a kid.

3. I was rabid for anything scary when I was a kid (not like that's changed), so I loved it. I was particularly freaked out by the scene with the clown doll and the mirror scene, where the guy pulls his own face off. It was even more exciting because I knew I wouldn't be allowed to watch it, had my parents known I was watching it.

4. Not sure. Maybe 5 or 6 times total. It's actually been quite a while since I saw it last. Might have to give it a spin.

5. Love the special effects.

1) Do you remember when you first watched it?

Christmas one year round the late 80s. One of the stations used to play heaps of late night movies over the holidays. Think it was one of the first times TV over here went for 24 hours... my memory is pretty hazy because it was so long ago. Think I caught Twilight Zone: The Movie round the same time.

2) Did you get any feedback (from friends or media) prior to watching it?

I'd heard from a few sources like Fangoria and word of mouth that it was top notch stuff. The famous "They're Here..." line had already been drilled into me from pop culture even before seeing the film.

3) How was the viewing experience? How did it affect you?

I found the film really underwhelming and didn't think it lived up to the praise. It just didn't gel with me at all. I got more bored than scared.

4) How many times have you rewatched it? Memories? Does it still hold good even today for you?

I've seen the film about 3 or 4 times since. I still don't hold it in as high regard as a lot of people but I appreciate it more nowadays. Some great scenes but overall it doesn't blow me away. I don't hate it or anything I just find it a bit bland and I think it's one of the reasons I've never been a big fan of ghost films. I put off watching a lot of great films because I figured they'd be like Poltergeist.

5) Anything else you wish to share?

I've always wondered why Spielberg never ventured into horror more often.

I read about it a lot. Since my early love for all horror was mostly into ghost stories, I was really pumped to see this ever since I read an article on it in a film mag.

3) How was the viewing experience? How did it affect you?

Boy, it was scary! I remember being grossed out by the chicken leg (maggots) scene and the guy pulling off his facial flesh in front of the mirror. And that floating apparition scene had my jaw hanging open. Not to mention that clown! And all those swimming skeletons in the pool at the climax.

It was scary. Brrrr...

4) How many times have you rewatched it? Memories? Does it still hold good even today for you?

Countless times. It has aged well and still holds up for a repeat viewing, I am glad to admit. Tobe Hooper has made a great film. I remember being quite impressed by this and part 2, although #3 was quite a bit of a disappointment.

5) Anything else you wish to share.

A good, effective scary story is always a fantastic viewing experience. Too bad we don't have such films made these days. Or maybe we have become too jaded to feel the horror of similar films in recent times.

Either way, Poltergeist ranks right up there with the finest in cinematic ghost story telling for me. A quality, top-notch film.

Do you remember when you first watched it?

Not really, I know I was young, probably around 10

How was the viewing experience? How did it affect you?

I still have a vivid recollection of the skeletons in the pool at the end, so while I dont exactly remember much about my first viewing experience, I'm sure it must've scared me plenty to remember it so clearly.

How many times have you rewatched it? Memories? Does it still hold good even today for you?

Rewatched it a bunch of times over the years. Really big fan of Tobe Hooper and I think he does a great job with this, but its the cast that really make it work.

1 - Do you remember when you first watched it? VHS or DVD?
DVD a few years back. One of the first horror films I owned.

2 - Did you get any feedback (from friends or media) prior to watching it?
I remember when I first heard about it was in a TV guide around 1999 (when it was released uncut as it had been in and out of circulation and banned status with various censorship cuts for years.) Of course I thought the title was just gnarly.

3 - How was the viewing experience?
I remember it having quite the impact on me, and it was a rather intense viewing experience. I've still not seen a horror movie that's scared me quite as much.

4 - How many times have you rewatched it since?
I've never watched it since the first time in one sitting, because if it's intensity. I usually have to split it in two parts, but I've not seen it for a while because I've lost track of where my DVD is...but I'm eager to find it.

1. I first saw TCM on VHS. Would have been in the mid to late 80's I guess.

2. You would have to live on a desert island to not have heard of TCM's reputation :D .

3. It was good, but because it had been so hyped, I was expecting something more gory (with more onscreen violence and gore) than I got. Its strength is as much psychological as visual (however that was a bit lost on me as a youngish teenager).

4. I have seen it about 5 or 6 times since that first viewing.

5. This is a movie that I appreciated more on subsequent viewings than I did at first. Not that I didn't like it originally, but I think once I knew what was on offer, I could appreciate it more for what it was (rather than what I thought it would be). Watching it when a bit older, I think I appreciated the psychological aspects of this film much more. This film is truly one of the greats of the genre, and lives up to its reputation.

1 - Do you remember when you first watched it? VHS or DVD?

None of the above. It was in a dusty darkened theatre at a midnight showing in Omaha, Nebraska, stoned as all fuck, with a group of teenage friends.

2 - Did you get any feedback (from friends or media) prior to watching it?

Oh yes, we knew all about it and couldn't wait to finally see it.

3 - How was the viewing experience?

Blew us away. We indentified quite well with the group of hippies getting stoned in the bus, an experience we'd shared many times amongst ourselves. The audience was dead silent during the showing, something that at the time indicated deep enjoyment and immersion into the film. Something quite different from a theatrical showing these days.

4 - How many times have you rewatched it since?

A few times. I tend not to rewatch films, but when I come across this on cable, I watch it because it really is an amazing film, the best thing Tobe Hooper ever did.

5 - Any memories associated with it, that you wish to share?

Its sick humor was quite unique for the time- something that has certainly been overdone to the nth degree since then. And that iconic image of Leatherface doing his dance at the end is something that can't ever be forgotten.

Do you remember when you first watched it? VHS or DVD?

As a young teen, I had watched plenty of horror before this, but had never seen anything like this before.

2 - Did you get any feedback (from friends or media) prior to watching it?

I watched it with a bunch of people at a house party. I think very few of the people watched it from start to finish, some probably got bored, some probably were trying to hide the fact that they were scared, but I remember it really didnt grab the other people watching it around me.

3 - How was the viewing experience?

It was one of a handful of movies I watched that essentially showed me something I wanted to see before I even realised I wanted to see it. It really is a classic, not just of the genre but of cinema as a whole.

4 - How many times have you rewatched it since?

Lots... Watching it as an adult you can maybe articulate why you love it better, but ultimatley the reason I love it now is the same as why I loved it the fist time I watched it. Its raw, its intense, its gritty and it really is an amazing piece of cinematography.

5 - Any memories associated with it, that you wish to share?

I just remember being frustrated that noone liked it as much as I did when I first watched it. I guess thats when you know you're a fan of something... You see something or do something then take a step back and realise that the average person just doesnt care about it as much as you do.

Do you remember when you first watched it? VHS or DVD?
I was a little late seeing this. It was 2005 or 2006. I was working at a Hollywood Video and i was working alone. It was slow and there was nobody in the store either. We had one of those little TV's with the VCR built in and so i decided to watch in the middle of the day.

Did you get any feedback (from friends or media) prior to watching it?
Oh of course. I had heard a lot about it especially how good it was so my expectations were pretty high.

How was the viewing experience?
Despite watching it on a tiny tv, in the middle of the day while keeping an eye out for customers and my boss of course, i still loved it and it has stayed one of my favorite horror movies to this day. I still hold that the scene where you first see Leatherface is one of the scariest moments of any horror movie.

How many times have you rewatched it since?
A few times. It's not a movie i can watch over and over again and frankly i don't want it to. The horror movies i love the most i tend to not watch that much so i can contain that special feeling every time i watch it.

1) The mid 80's. I was 9 or so. It was my Dad's VHS.

2) I did from my Dad and Uncle. They warned me it was "brutal" and I might be too young to watch it. I had already seen Halloween, F13, and NOES ...so we popped it in.

3) It blew my mind. The macabre atmosphere and the insanity was a lot for a 9 year old kid.

4) Too many to count.

5) It's the film that left me wondering... "Does it get any crazier then this?"

1 - Do you remember when you first watched it? VHS or DVD?

I first watched it one school holidays, think I was about 13 or 14. Watched it on VHS when it turned up one day at the video store. I'd been wanting to see it for years! This is the tape right here:

2 - Did you get any feedback (from friends or media) prior to watching it?

Out of all the horror films I'd read and heard about this one had the biggest reputation. Heard it was extreme and it was all TRUE and actually happened! I remember seeing clips of it on Summer School and I had been on the hunt for it ever since.

3 - How was the viewing experience?

It was a bit underwhelming as the film's reputation/title had lead me to believe the film would be a shocking wall to wall gorefest. A lot of what makes the film so effective was lost on the teenage version of me. I still dug it a lot and thought it was a great film especially how it looked and the style of it in general. I had just built up something different in my mind. It had quite an impact on me changing my taste in film giving me a love for gritty realism.

4 - How many times have you rewatched it since?

Countless times and it just gets better every time I watch it (after discussing it here I'm going to watch it again tonight!). It's the quintessential horror classic for me and IMO one of the greatest flicks to come out of the US. It's so good I own three different copies :D

The shower scene in Psycho gets talked about a lot but Kirk's death is a lot more unsettling. I get goosebumps when Leatherface slides that door shut. Amazing scene.

Haha that's awesome. I wish I could've seen it the same way. Would've been a whole different experience seeing it when it came out. It's just got such a folklore behind it now it's impossible to go into it with a clean slate. It would be great if they restored a print and this hit the theatres again.

Couple of years back, on dvd.

2 - Did you get any feedback (from friends or media) prior to watching it?

As usually plenty of recs from almost every top horror film list online.

3 - How was the viewing experience?

Truly one of a kind. Got a 'real' 70's found footage vibe on it. Watched it alone in a middle of the night. Totally blew me away.

4 - How many times have you rewatched it since?

Not much...2 or 3 times.

5 - Any memories associated with it, that you wish to share?

After looking for it years finally found an original dvd on a store. But probably showing my huge interest for it, they didn't sell the original copy as they had only one. They told me to give them some time (days) to make couple of pirated dvd copies of it by copying it into the blank dvds. I gave them a week & requested them make a good copy for me. When I went back next week to buy & collect it from the store I found the dvd with a wrong cover. As they didn't know much about it, they used a poor photocopy cover of the remake for the dvd disc & the box. To make sure I requested them to play for me on their player. The funny thing happened when the dvd started to play...before appearing the dvd/disc options like play, scene selection, special features etc. there is the scene of Sally tied up in a chair & the camera is moving back & forth on her bloody face and she was screaming like hell. The scene & the sound instantly grabbed the attention from everyone who were inside & just outside the store at that time. Believe me...for a moment they all thought it's something very original. Slowly one after another started to ask about the movie with a jaw-dropping expression in their face. The seller at the store was freaked out too as he never checked even the original dvd until then. Only one exception was me...there was one big smile on my face with tons of satisfaction like conquering something very desirable after a long search & time.

1. Oh yes. I rented from one of the small video shops in town, over one night at a friend's house. My parent's wouldn't have let me watch it, so that always made it even more exciting. This was VHS of course, and it blew us away. I even remember realizing back then that there wasn't much blood, that Hooper implied much more than he showed, and that made it even more terrifying. Also, just the chance of it all, that these kids could be anybody anywhere, scared me too.

2. Yes, at the time, I'd buy Fangoria issues whenever I actually saved some allowance money. Of course, I'd read about it plenty in there.

3. Like I said, we were blown away. That year for Hallowe'en, my friend and I argued who would dress up as Leatherface. He ended up doing it. Asshole.

2. I had seen stills and read a bit about it in a horror movie book that I had.

3. A bit lukewarm the first time I saw it.

4. I have seen it probably 6-8 times since that first viewing.

5. It was the first of the Romero "dead" movies that I had seen, and probably the first modern zombie film I had seen. I think prior to this, I had only seen older zombie films like "I Walked With A Zombie".

I think I wasn't so impressed on my first viewing because I was used to (and expecting) a film more like these older films - something more plot-driven. However, on subsequent viewings I have come to really like this film, and it is my favourite "modern" zombie film, and probably my favourite zombie film.

Unfortunately I'm not sure when I first saw it-it's lost in my pre-teen friday night horror viewing but I do remember seeing it in my teens then I saw it again recently. So I've seen it three times-I would say my second viewing must have had the most impact on me-It was the scale of the zombie outbreak and the epic scope of the direction and production. I wouldn't have been able to comment about the film like that at the time but having seen it recently it still affected me in the same way and in no way seemed of it's time-to me it's still relevant today. I think being introduced to this level of gore at such a young age has helped desentisize me in more recent years also cementing my fan appreciate for horror. It's one of those horror films that you could show to action film fans and they would enjoy it to.

1 - Do you remember when you first watched it? Theater, VHS or DVD?
None of those. I watched it on Youtube (I no longer do this, what with the poor visual quality and the fact I now pay for copyrighted material to stay within the law. Silly of me to take such measures so strongly, I know).

This would've been about 4 years ago and it was one of the first horror films I saw.

2 - Did you get any feedback (from friends or media) prior to watching it?
I was certainly aware of it. It's a very famous film and the fact was not too long after the remake and Shawn Of The Dead, it's one of those titles that even virtually all non-horror-fans know.

3 - How was the viewing experience?
Pretty good and I was pretty absorbed by it. As this was one of the first horror films I saw, I remember being blown away by the gore (particularly the sequence where the biker gets his guts ripped out).

4 - How many times have you rewatched it since?
I couldn't really count. I'm not good at keeping track of all that and it probably ranks as one of the films I've seen most over and over again. Seen it on the internet, on TV, DVD and Blu-Ray.

5 - Any memories associated with it, that you wish to share?
I highly reccomend the Blu Ray released by Arrow in the UK (I don't know if Arrow distributes outside the UK, but I don't think so) I got a copy for a good price (£17, which was actually cheaper than the Arrow DVD version which had the same stuff) and you get the Blu Ray cut of the film, two other DVD versions (the director's cut and the Argento cut) plus a lot of special features.

1. I rented it at the same mom-and-pop video store that introduced me to so many low-budget, gory classics. I was probably 13 or so.

2. I had read about it in issues of Fangoria. Some of my friends had heard about it, too, and we'd all talk about how awesome it must be.

3. It was great. I watched it with some friends who had heard of it. We all were completely into it.

4. Not sure. Probably at least 10.

5. It's one of those horror films I have that nostalgic connection to. It reminds me of being young, rabidly going through as many horror movies I could find, sometimes borrowing my parents' camcorder and making my own horror movies with friends. I personally don't like it as much as Night or Day, but it's still definitely special.

I first caught it on VHS. This fucker right here...

...a friend of mine hired it and loaned me the tape and said I just had to see it.

2 - Did you get any feedback (from friends or media) prior to watching it?

I had heard nothing really before watching it. Don't think it was even mentioned in a lot of the issues of Fangoria I had at the time. It had slipped under my radar and I went into this one fairly blind aside from my friend telling me it had some great gore.

3 - How was the viewing experience?

It was like nothing I had ever seen before. It had all the gore and graphic violence that other horror flicks I'd watched at the time promised but never delivered. I found the story and characters really captivating. Loved the tense claustrophobic atmosphere too. I was pretty blown away and it still remains one of my favourite films.

I first saw it as a teenager, but that would have been about 25 years after it was released so there were no surprises. I still enjoyed it a great deal.

My father saw it in the theater (I guess he would have been 19 or 20 at the time), and said he was gripping the arm of the theater seat so hard he got bursitis in his shoulder.

Honestly i can't remember

2 - Did you get any feedback (from friends or media) prior to watching it?
I already knew the ending before i watched it.

3 - How was the viewing experience?
Despite knowing everything about it, the feel of the movie and the sudden way the music would play still got me.

4 - How many times have you rewatched it since?
2 or 3

5 - Any memories associated with it, that you wish to share?
Everyone talks about the shower scene but for me the scariest part is when the guy is looking around in the house and all of a sudden the music plays and Mrs. Bates runs up and kills him.

First time I remember watching it was in my late teens/ early twenties, on TV... Its possible I saw it at a much younger age, but I dont have clear memories of it.

2 - Did you get any feedback (from friends or media) prior to watching it?
I knew about the movie and had a decent understanding of Hitchcock and what he had done, but wouldnt call myself a fan, at that time.

3 - How was the viewing experience?
Loved it... The mid-plot twist is beautiful and its the first time I had seen anything like that happen in a movie. Since then I've always loved movies that try to break the rules and/or play with the audiance in some way.

4 - How many times have you rewatched it since?
Not many, maybe 3.

5 - Any memories associated with it, that you wish to share?
My favourite scene is where Norman is being quizzed by the detective about Marions whereabouts. Quality piece of acting from Anthony Perkins.

Film class as an undergrad. Definitely VHS but in an auditorium classroom.

We'd been told it was "the most influential american film of all time" and of course I'd heard of the shower scene and knew the ending.

3 - How was the viewing experience?
Awesome. We were riveted. And that wasn't the case for most of the 'really important' older films (I remember someone in front of me snoring loudly through citizen kane. But Psycho had everyone on the edge of their seat because other than the shower scene and the end none of us knew what else was going to happen.

at least 100

5 - Any memories associated with it, that you wish to share?
Not really. I've introduced some of my friends to it and find that if they watch through the first 10 minutes or so they get hooked. but if they keep getting up for beer or whatever during the first part then I know it just isn't going to gel with them

1 - Do you remember when you first watched it? Theater, VHS, DVD?
Okay...well I got it on DVD when I was about 17 and hadn't seen it before. What I'd expected was basically a horror film from the start and what turned out to be at first a pretty mediocre and colour-by-number thriller (by Hitchcock standards) and never actually made it to Norman and all that. (I was a lot less patient with my films back then). I knew stuff was in there, just couldn't be bothered to wait and was completely thrown off by the different tact the film took at the begining.

I now realise that Hitchcock intended the opposite since he was considered a director of thrillers rather than horror and he wanted people to be shocked when he killed off the "star" some fourty minutes into the film.

I saw the whole thing start-to-finish just a little over a year ago. I was studying music at university and one of the classes was Music In Film where we studied some of the works of Bernard Hermann. There's a facility at the university called The Void which is a lecture hall/screening room (imagine an average screening room for an inependent cinema with fold-out desks) and one of the films we watched was Psycho and I liked it when it was pulled together. Anthony Perkins (especially in the film's epilogue) provides one of my all-time favourite acting performances.

2 - Did you get any feedback (from friends or media) prior to watching it?
Well everyone knows the shower scene and I knew about things like Norman Bates and the Ed Gein connection, but it was sort of like loose pieces from a jogsaw puzzle if you see what I mean. I just didn't quite know how they were put together.

3 - How was the viewing experience?
I mentioned above. Boring when I tried to watch it the first few times (tbh, I'm still not that thrilled about it now) but it's all worth it once Anthony Perkins turns up. Controversially though, I still prefer The Birds which I consider Hitchcock's only "true" horror film (Psycho and his often overlooked penultimate film Frenzy both have elements of horror but I sort of still consider them both thillers...although the line is blurred with Psycho.)

4 - How many times have you rewatched it since?
I've seen the whole thing 3 times.

This is going to sound so wrong as a horror fan as well as an admirer of one of my favourite directors, Steven Spielberg, but...I've never seen Jaws.

I've simply never got around to it. I also remember watching the first twenty minutes or so when I was very young and being very scared. I still think the part with kid gets eaten is just brutal.

Strange that most horror films get an 18 or perhaps 15 certificate from the BBFC and Jaws of all things is a PG.

1. I first saw it on TV when I was maybe 6.

2. Actually, what first made we want to watch the movie was riding the Jaws ride at Universal Studios on a family trip. It totally blew my mind.

3. As a 6-year-old, there's nothing much more awesome and enthralling than a giant killer shark.

4. Maybe 3 or 4.

5. Not really, just the experience of riding the attraction at Universal. I obsessed over seeing it after that. My parents got me this souvenir from the ride; it was the shark, halved, with two suction cups on the inside so you could make it look like it was going right through the window. I played with that thing constantly.

2. I just remember my mom telling me about it.

3. I thought it was awesome, and it really gave me the willies for a while. I remember being freaked out when I would go to bed, thinking that I'd wake up and Damien would be standing at the foot of my bed or something.

Watched it on TV a few years ago.

I remember a few years before I saw it for the first time my mother (who isn't usually the kind to watch horror films) watched it after I had gone to bed. It was quite loud and could hear it while I was lying in bed. I was already aware of the film though.

3 - How was the viewing experience?
Can't quite say I remember. When I was first going to watch it on TV, I was getting prepped as I had the house to myself only for my sister and her boyfriend to barge in and watch TV instead, which annoyed me. I've always been honest that this has never been a favourite, although I am fond of it. I always felt that Omens II and III are underrated. Omen IV is dire though.

4 - How many times have you rewatched it since?
A few times

5 - Any memories associated with it, that you wish to share?
Again in my University days this was required viewing to learn about scoring horror films. Unfortunately I missed the screening (I had to have a criminal record check which was standard procedure at the university so a few of us missed the screening). It was a shame because I always prefer watching a film in a screening room or theatre environment to anything else and one of my friends (Who HATES horror movies and is scared witless by them) got to go and I missed his reaction. Still I got the film on DVD and watched that and the next week we watched the openings of several horror films in class and freaked him out (I especially recall his reaction to the opening to Texas Chainsaw Massacre. lol).

D'oh! nevermind! I watched Frankenstein a few weeks ago, and I have a question about this flick. In the classic horror forum, I posted that it had a terrible ending for such a great movie. But I was informed that it had multiple endings. What are the other endings? The one I watched had frankenstein convalescing in the background, while his father is drinking wine with the women servants.

Amazingly this wasn't the first Dario Argento movie I ever saw-it was Trauma in the late 90s and then Deep Red. I actually didn't see Suspiria until 2003 after I had left uni and moved into my own place for the first time. 1 - Do you remember when you first watched it? Theater, VHS, DVD?

At probably 2007 or 08, on DVD.

http://i1097.photobucket.com/albums/g348/sanjidhdc/SuspiriaDVD.jpg

Bought it from e-bay:)

2 - Did you get any feedback (from friends or media) prior to watching it?

Yup! From HDC's lists & friend's recommendation.

3 - How was the viewing experience?

Fantastic! Color contrast, set design, background scores, camera works and overall atmosphere totally blew me away. It was one of those my early films that introduced me with the golden era of Italian horror movies. Loved it.

4 - How many times have you rewatched it since?

Probably 3 or 4.

5 - Any memories associated with it, that you wish to share?

Nothing particular. Though at the first viewing expected a mind-fuck, freaky-bizarre ending but still loved the story & it made me a good fan of Argento. Undeniably a true classic indeed.

1 - Do you remember when you first watched it? Theater, VHS, DVD?

DVD, actually. I didn't get the VHS of this and kept postponing it till I rented the DVD.

2 - Did you get any feedback (from friends or media) prior to watching it?

Oh yes! Apart from being touted as Argento's masterpiece, the music by Goblin was already a superhit. I read about it in film mags, saw bits and pieces of it on TV shows, read about it on the Net, etc. A lot of feedback, actually.

3 - How was the viewing experience?

Fantastic. The use of colors by Argento is brilliant, and the harrowing Goblin music! So reminiscent of Indian film music, specially the suspenseful tracks. It did not disappoint me at all. Loved it.

4 - How many times have you rewatched it since?

5-6 times since then.

5 - Any memories associated with it, that you wish to share?

Bought Goblin's audio CD shortly after my first Suspiria watch. Someday I might get them to sign it for me. A distant dream.

VHS. A fine, grainy print which added to the atmosphere.

2 - Did you get any feedback (from friends or media) prior to watching it?

Of course! Who hasn't heard of the milestone of our genre?!

3 - How was the viewing experience?

Fantastic. It surpassed all my expectations. Right from the opening scenes to the lockout inside the house, the tension build-up, the ultra-creepy child zombie scene, and the shocking finale! That one shot fired in the ending made me jump back in my chair. Poor Ben.

4 - How many times have you rewatched it since?

Lost count. I don't know...around 30-odd times, maybe more.

None, except that if this scenario became real someday, you know where it all began.

I hadn't actually heard anything specific about it but the movie just had a natural recognition without even having to hear about it.

It was amazing. I remember me and my brother being really afraid the whole time especially when my Dad heard us and came downstairs. He scared the hell out of us. We ended up having to sneak down another night to finish it

1 - Do you remember when you first watched it? Theater, VHS, DVD?

My first viewing was fairly recent. I'm talking maybe a few years ago on TV. It was on one of those classic channels where someone describes the impact of the movie. I only saw bits and pieces of the remake on TV and thought that it was awesome and that I needed to see the whole movie. But I was surprised at how different Barbara is in the original.

2 - Did you get any feedback (from friends or media) prior to watching it?

None really except for what the commentator said before the movie. I found the remake watching TV late at night. I only vaguely knew of the original before the surprise viewing on TV.

3 - How was the viewing experience?

Awesome and surprising. As I mentioned in the first question. Barbara's character was different. I love the music in the original and the remake for that matter. I like how it's not really the zombies that are a problem but the people.

4 - How many times have you rewatched it since?

Tons. It's one of the best horror movies.

5 - Any memories associated with it, that you wish to share?

"They're coming to get you." I love that line. I'm still not sure if I prefer the original or the remake. I do like Barbara's character more in the remake. I need to pickup both of these on Blu-ray. I saw an HD version of the remake and it was beautiful.

1 - Do you remember when you first watched it? Theater, VHS, DVD?

A late night horror movie show on cable here in Australia called the graveyard shift, I taped it from tv that night and still have the tape.

2 - Did you get any feedback (from friends or media) prior to watching it?

I don't recall knowing anything about it

3 - How was the viewing experience?

great, I was 17, I was only beginning to understand the suttle undertones horror movies had and my girlfriend at the time loved dissecting horror with me.

4 - How many times have you rewatched it since?

maybe 20 or so, I watched it a lot at first, but now save it for every couple of years.

5 - Any memories associated with it, that you wish to share?

It was the first movie I saw that made me want to know how it was made, and I managed to get a copy of the the "Night of the living dead movie book" which explains eveything Romero and co went through prior to making it and how they managed to put it together. better than a behind the scenes featurete, highly recomended if you can get your hands on a copy.

I still rate it as the equal greatest movie ever ever made, along with taxi driver.

I managed fortunately to see Scream in the cinema's when it was released with a schoolmate bunking off school. I remember what a joy it was because I must have been 15 or 16 when I saw so I'd seen enough horror films at the time to get it and me and my mate absolutely adored the opening sequence. As much as I love it I find it more of it's time and it's something I would watch only for nostalgic purposes now-I doubt I'd really enjoy it enough to revisit it too often though.

2. Nope. I wasn't watching that many horror movies around the release of Scream. I think I heard it in passing but I knew nothing of the story.

3. I thought it was great. How it broke down the horror rules was new to me. It had cameos and nods to horror films. Freddy in the school with the sweater. And I didn't see the twist at all.

4. Tons of times. I watch it when it's on demand a lot.

5. No special memories really, other than the "I'll be right back" line. It's crazy how much that line is used in horror movies.

2 - Did you get any feedback (from friends or media) prior to watching it?

3 - How was the viewing experience?

4 - How many times have you rewatched it since?

5 - Any memories associated with it, that you wish to share?

1. I remember it because I was around the age of 9 and I rented it from Movie Time on VHS.

2. I did my grandma had shown me a lot of 1950s horror that she loved. When I told my dad I liked it. He suggested Psycho because it was his first horror movie.

3. The viewing experience was great. I know a lot of people my age that don't appreciate films just because they are Black & White, but because of being introduced to them I love them. I thought it was scary and awesome.

4. I have watched it about five more times after that initial experience.

5. I was really susceptible as a kid to being fearful and yet I loved horror, go figure. I was more wary when I took a shower. That lasted for a little bit.

Some others that were listed:

Scream 1996:

1. I first watched it when I was 11. I again rented it at Movie Time on VHS. (I miss that in a way)

2. I had no prior suggestions to watch it. I had already seen Nightmare of Elm Street and knew of Wes Craven. The cover and description intrigued me when I was browsing the video store.

3. My experience was good. I had a better one when I re watched it the second time with my cousins and we were home alone in a dark living room with a lot of windows. We really freaked each other out.

4. I have watched it more than 7 times since then.

5. It embraced my love of the genre because it was aware of the genre in itself. Loved that concept.

Halloween:

1. I was around 7 when I first watched it on TV during Halloween.

2. I had heard about it and always had a tradition of watching horror movies on Halloween even before I really got into them. I was young so watching them on TV meant that they were more censored to my parents. They watched them with me and I loved that thrill of being scared.

3. My experience was great because it was actually on Halloween night after I went trick or treating so that made it so much better.

4. I have seen it every Halloween since then.

5. It was really the first slasher movie I had ever seen, and I really did not even know it at that time. I just found it scary each Halloween. The music was very memorable and built so much suspense.

Poltergeist:

1. Watched it on TV during around 6 or 7.

2. Both my parents had seen it in the 80s so they told me I should watch it.

3. I had a good experience because I watched it alone, makes it creepier.

4.I have watched i more than five times.

5. I really found it scary, especially the clown part. I though the concept was great too when I watched it as I got older.

Jaws:

1. Watched it on TV with my dad when I was 6 or 7.

2. Its one of my dad's favorites.

3. The experience was cool because I was watching it with my dad. We liked the same movies.

4. I have seen it a lot and I don't know how much.

5. I liked it a lot. Dun duh dun duh dun duh I can hear every time.

The Omen:

1. I think I was 12 or 13 and I saw it on TV.

2. I knew my parents had seen it.

3. I found the experience to be enjoyable.

4. I have watched it a few more times.

5. I really liked it. I thought it was a creepy film. " Look at me Damien, It's all for you!" is the creepiest part to me.

1 - Do you remember when you first watched it? Theater, VHS or DVD? VHS

2 - Did you get any feedback (from friends or media) prior to watching it? No

3 - How was your first viewing experience? I was pretty young and it was one of the goriest movies I had seen at the time, so I was impressed! :)

4 - How many times have you re-watched it since? Probably... about 5 times or so.

5 - Any special memories associated with it, that you wish to share? Yeah, my dad rented the movie for me, and it kind of marked the point in time where he started to accept my taste for horror.

1 - Do you remember when you first watched it? Theater, VHS or DVD?

Television. Late night. Alone. Caught it from about 15 minutes in.
I was about 11 years old, so by then it was near a decade old...though I remember even after seeing Krueger and Hellraiser, this was quite "new" for me.

2 - Did you get any feedback (from friends or media) prior to watching it?

Nope.
Had not even heard of it at the time.

3 - How was your first viewing experience?

Yeah...pretty scary...as I said, while I grew up in the 80's and was no stranger to the more hm "physical" representations of horror, this was maybe one of my first outings, or realisations of atmosphere used to good effect in horror. I felt suspense, and dread, and at the same time the concept of a creature that could be anyone/any living thing was...quite thought provoking.

4 - How many times have you re-watched it since?

Probably 4 repeat viewings. I still consider it a great film, though I like to space things a bit. I now own it on BluRay and I have to say it's just the most brilliant conversion of an older film onto BR I've ever seen...if you have the dvd already, I'd still recommend an upgrade.

5 - Any special memories associated with it, that you wish to share?
I guess what I already mentioned - it was my first experience/realisation thereof, of atmospheric horror.

3. Perfect. Watching this for the first time is one of those particularly special horror-related memories from when I was young. It was definitely a big part in contributing to my life-long love of horror films.

4. Countless.

5. Watching it with friends, especially if they haven't seen it before.

I think my mother had seen it, she liked the thriller genre and seemed to think I'd enjoy it...I was about 11 as I recall.

3 - How was your first viewing experience?

While I like it now, I found it boring and drawn out then.
I was very into action and horror at the time. Words were like, superfluous to my movie experience at this stage in my life.

About 3.
Definitely thought a lot more of it when I wasn't being immediately dismissive. Rates as one of my top thriller films to this day.

5 - Any special memories associated with it, that you wish to share?

There was something wrong with the particular reel that was sent to that theater as the boom mic could clearly be seen during many shots and not even subtly. During the scene in the classroom where Cole is talking about the people being hanged in the school, the boom mic stretched across the entire shot extremely visible. Me and my brothers could not contain our laughter during that scene and probably annoyed a few people but it remains something that the three of us still talk about.

Hey V? Which movie to you mean? You mean 1954 Gojira/Godzilla, or the '1956' Godzilla, King of the Monsters with raymond burr? In some ways, they are the same, and many diehards would insist they are very different.

You probably mean Gojira, but I'll write about both.

1 - Do you remember when you first watched it? Theater, VHS or DVD?

Even though I was a gigantic Godzilla fan, I saw 90% of the pre-1984 Godzilla movies as a kid, except for Gojira (which was not available) and Godzilla, King of the Monsters, which very rarely was shown on TV. I had to miss it every time it was on TV.

I finally saw Godzilla, King of the Monsters on VHS around 2000. And finally was able to see Gojira around 2008 on DVD I rented from Blockbuster Mail.

2 - Did you get any feedback (from friends or media) prior to watching it?

I had heard from general media that Gojira was anti-nuclear bomb themed, or even that Gojira symbolized the United States (1954). I got the sense it was more serious than the other Godzilla movies (LOL).

3 - How was your first viewing experience?

Godzilla, King of the Monsters -- I was impressed with the story, the over all look and visual techniques (suited man & minitures, puppet Godzilla head), and the Godzilla roar was different -- it has a 'drag smear dip' pitch bend in it that make it sound very twisted, sick and evilly insane. (Did you all notice the different roar?). I rather enjoyed it.

Gojira -- Gojira was much more difficult to watch. It's dark mood, slow pace and duration (especially where Gojira moves through the city) made me feel dread, misery, distress, helplessness and depression. I imagine that's a taste of what the Nipponese felt during the US fire bombings of their cities (67 Japanese cities, 500,000 Japanese deaths and 5 million more made homeless). By the end of the movie, I was wiped out. It wasn't pleasant at all.

4 - How many times have you re-watched it since?

Godzilla, King of the Monsters I've seen twice. Gojira once.

5 - Any special memories associated with it, that you wish to share?

I have a vague fond memory of seeing the last half of Godzilla with my mom, who stayed with because of Raymond Burr. I saw both movies alone. The American distributor who decided to change Gojira with the Raymond Burr addition did an excellent job with it, and successfully made it an enjoyable movie. Many would say they butchered Gojira and should burn eternally in an atombomb hell. I say they are two different movies, both good and classic.

1 - Do you remember when you first watched it? Theater, VHS or DVD?

Not sure, probably watched it a few years after release on VHS....

2 - Did you get any feedback (from friends or media) prior to watching it?

Mostly remember the heavy (and deserved) criticism of Keanu Reeves

3 - How was your first viewing experience? Did you like Gary Oldman's take on the Count?

This is the movie that made me fall in love with camp, over blown cinema... I really hadn't seen anything as ridiculous or equally amazing as this movie before. Every colour, detail, action and line is delivered with total excess. I guess it would be wrong of me to ignore the women in this movie too. I'm sure I would have been around 14 or so when I first watched this movie and pretty much every woman in it is insanely sexy.

4 - How many times have you re-watched it since?

Lots.... probably still watch it around once every couple of years or so.

5 - Any special memories associated with it, that you wish to share?

Really just love this movie so much.... Over acted, over produced, over saturated colour and lighting, impossibly camp and ridiculous dialogue. Total invasion of the senses that really shouldn't work but I loved it on first viewing and still love it now. Everything a vampire (campire?) movie should be and then some....

Really enjoyed Cary Elwes' performance as Holmwood too.... But I am a huge fan of the Holmwood, Seward and Morris characters in general.

Most over acted line of the movie? There's the bastard! Courtesy of Keanu...

1 - Do you remember when you first watched it? Theater, VHS or DVD?
VHS

2 - Did you get any feedback (from friends or media) prior to watching it?
Not really, just who was in the cast.

3 - How was your first viewing experience? Did you like Gary Oldman's take on the Count?
Oldman did a good job, but I continue to watch it because of Anthony Hopkins.

4 - How many times have you re-watched it since?
Probably 50 times.

5 - Any special memories associated with it, that you wish to share?
I watch it with my dad a lot and we always bust out laughing when they are sitting at dinner and Mina asks, "How did Lucy die? Was she in great pain?"

Professor Abraham Van Helsing: Yeah, she was in great pain. Then we cut off her head, and drove a stake through her heart, and burned it, and then she found peace.

Still our favorite part in the whole movie.

1. I first watched this on a dvd that, I believe, my Dad had bought for me. Me, my Mom, and my Dad all watched it together. This was probably nine or ten years ago (I was probably nine or ten), I am not entirely sure (It could have been fewer years than that, I am only giving my best guess). The first time I watched it I did not really like it a lot because I was so used to Dracula (1931), which I loved and watched a lot when I was a kid. After the first couple of times, I started to like it and now it is one of my favorite films.

2. I had not heard anything good or bad about it. Although, it was featured in a horror movie documentary I watched a lot called Monster Mania.

3. I described my first viewing experience in number one. Today, I really enjoy the film. I love how close it is to the book, which I have read. I thought all the performances were great, especially Oldman's and Hopkin's (Hopkin's as Van Helsing was probably my favorite character in the film). Plus, the film has a really good score. I am actually really surprised that a number of people do not like it because I like it so much now.

4. I have probably watched this, no exaggeration, 100-150+ times since. In fact, this film used to be the film I would watch when I was ready for bed (I have always had to sleep with the TV on and I would often put in a movie as well).

5. I have a number of special memories with it, which I have described above.

VHS

2 - Did you get any feedback (from friends or media) prior to watching it?

The only thing I knew was that the director was the same guy who had made Bad Taste.

3 - How was your first viewing experience? Did the gore shock you?

Not really shocking. I was surprised at the time how much fake blood was in the lawnmower scene. I watched it with a couple buddies and we laughed through the whole thing.

4 - How many times have you re-watched it since?

Realistically...probably around 30 times.

5 - Any special memories associated with it, that you wish to share?

One of my friends that I watched it with killed himself a few years later and while we watched a bunch of movies back then, I really remember him laughing a lot during that one.

Is this the Peter Jackson movie? I barely remember seeing it once. I thought the story was pretty bad and the horror aspect wasn't scary but I think it was over the top. I can't remember much except a lot of blood and a crazy large monster at the end. I saw it on Fear Net I believe.

Hey V, now that the 100 years of horror is done, how about more of this?

5 - Any special memories associated with it, that you wish to share?

1. None of these...FearNet.

2. I had heard something from one of my older sister's ex-boyfriends. He was not a horror fan, and he didn't like it. But the way he described it sounded great to me, so I decided to give it a shot.

3. I laughed through nausea, I know that much. It didn't shock me, but I can't act like I'm made of stone.

4. I've seen it over 5 or 6 times now. Love it.

5. I showed it to one of my high school boyfriends, and he "coincidentally" broke up with me the next day. About a year ago, I ran into him at the bar and he said that he had dumped me because the movie freaked him out and I was "too hardcore" for him. I found that hysterical.

LOL! I'm sorry, I just can't imagine a guy breaking up with a girl because she picked out Dead Alive to watch, and that meant she was "too hardcore". I guess everybody's different and anything is possible, but seems a bit convenient to blame a movie someone picked out or likes. It's not like your favorite movie was Faces of Death, or the Bad Lieutenant. It's impossible to take Dead Alive seriously, it's just too goofy. I recommend you don't believe anything that guy had ever said, Cara. :) I can't imagine dropping someone over a movie... I think I would really have to believe they enjoyed cruelty.

1 - Do you remember when you first watched it? Theater, VHS or DVD?
Online, in the last year

2 - Did you get any feedback (from friends or media) prior to watching it?
Nothing from friends. But from the general media that it was good, that it was scary, and made by Peter Jackson.

3 - How was your first viewing experience?
Very disappointed. Had decent special effects, and the idea was original to the big screen. But to me, it wasn't scary, and it wasn't funny (except for one or two lines). It was a little too goofy and kiddie for me, like watching a Sat morning cartoon.

4 - How many times have you re-watched it since?
Will never happen.

5 - Any special memories associated with it, that you wish to share?
Yes, I loved gazing upon Trini Alvarado's beautiful face.

1) Do you remember when you first watched it?

I think I was about 7 or 8

2) Did you get any feedback (from friends or media) prior to watching it?

Nope

3) How was the viewing experience? How did it affect you?

I loved it, it made me laugh and it scared me at the same time but this was one of the movies that really started to get me into the horror genre so for that this movie will always hold a special place in my heart.

4) How many times have you rewatched it? Memories? Does it still hold good even today for you?

I usually watch it multiple times during October so God only knows how many times I've seen it. It certainly holds up the same parts I thought were funny back when I was 7 I still find funny today and the parts I used to find scary I still consider to be creepy. I remember right after I watched it I tried to convince my parents to get me some ghost friends (safe to say my request was denied.)

5) Anything else you wish to share.

Marty McFly ain't scared of no ghost!

1 - Do you remember when you first watched it? Theater, TV or DVD?

Yes, I purchased the DVD from Amazon on a Thursday and it arrived by the next day at noon. It was a DVD.

2 - Did you get any feedback (from friends or media) prior to watching it?

Yeah, I had heard many good things about it (including from this website). It had just been added to the Scary Movie Rankings then, so I decided to give it a shot.

3 - How was your first viewing experience? Were you scared stiff by the time the end credits started rolling?

I loved it. I was not really scared, except for at the final scene. Of course, when the plot twist was revealed, it significantly increased in scariness, for me.

4 - How many times have you re-watched it since?

I have not. I plan to watch it with my nephew, who has seen Quarantine, though.

5 - Any special memories associated with it, that you wish to share?

Not really. I watched it with my friend, Elijah. We thought it was really good.

Note: I have never seen Quarantine, even though I own both.
