I've asked myself that question a few times. Some people in my circle of friends and family have asked me why not write romance or fluffy bunnies? I simply say I don't want to. I love the freedom and means of expression that I feel when I craft a horror story. Take for instance my latest work The Tequila Diaries:Organ Donor. I had the idea in my head for a year or two. When I was going to work in the morning I saw a bumper sticker on a beat up truck that said be an organ donor and save a life. That bumper sticker was the driving force and after I saw that I knew I had to write Organ Donor.
Having the strange mind that I have I thought why not counter that thinking and undercut a wonderful belief with fear and anxiety. At the same time, creating honest characters that reflect sub-cultures in society.
I can honestly say I've always loved horror since I was a young child. Now that I am a grown man being able to find a platform of expression relating to the genre I love is a dream come true. So, the only fluffly bunnies I'll be writing about would have fangs.
So, for me it's all about the expression and a means just to freak people out and get them thinking about the little things in life that can be so down right scary.
What about you? Why do you like horror? Or if you work in the genre what drives you to create macabre masterpieces of terror?
