The name of the short story is called Organ Donor from the collection titled The Tequila Diaries. The work is from new author, Jamie Horwath.
Here is an excerpt from the short story.
"The bus ride was boring to say the least. Creek found mild entertainment in watching the raindrops play Picasso on the window. The water broke apart and reformed in shapes that would make a pornographer blush. Rain cast a surreal camouflage to the mundane acts of perversity that called home to the streets. Quick drug deals, nonchalant whoring, and the poverty-stricken, fighting for a better life crawled by in a clip of flash photography. Creek grew bored with the drills and gave a meticulous look around. Surmising that the surrounding unhinged were self-absorbed in their pretentiously, pompous poppycock, he reached to his front pocket and produced a silver pentagram. Carefully unscrewing one of the points, he dumped a bit of white powder onto his thumbnail and raised it to his nose. With a quick snort, the powder was gone. He replaced the small cap on the pentagram's point and put the drug coffer back in his pocket. Creek's mind exploded into the sky, lifting his body up. In an instant, he floated back onto the cheap cloth cushion offered by the bus for a meager exchange of two dollars and twenty-five cents. His left hand moved up and down the back of the seat in front of him, and then Creek closed his eyes. The sound of a double-bass indie metal band licked his eardrums from a few seats anterior. Light red streaks burned the black canvas of his eyelids before fading from view. He opened his eyes and shook his head. The high was quick and reckless, but it got him to the end of his ride. The bus slowed and came to a stop near the side of the road. Creek kept his left hand in his pocket with the stash and quickly exited the bus, carrying a paranoid gait."
The Tequila Diaries:Organ Donor is a dark, gritty, and action filled grindhouse type horror story. The short features a variety of twists to keep you guessing but not confuse you. The story is very concise and uses metaphors very effectively. The short story is available for sale now at amazon and barnes and noble online retailers. The book features four pieces of artwork that mirror the text that surrounds the art.
If you like The Tequila Diaries:Organ Donor, which I think you will. It is a good story. Every person that has read the book has really enjoyed it. Stating it was chilling and creepy with a tinge of Lovecraft and a splash of Ketchum. Anyway, if you like The Tequila Diaries check out Horwath's first book Extinction Chronicles, a collection of six short stories. Four of the stories have a Lovecraft influence, another is a dystopean world, and the last is a reboot of the Werewolf genre.
Here's what one critic said about Horwath's writing.
"Horwath’s writing has some of the poetic prose of Ray Bradbury, the characterization skills of Stephen King, and the succinct narrative abilities and eclectic humor of Joe R. Lansdale and Clive Barker."
