View Full Version : Netflix Gems

I've noticed several of us here subscribe to Netflix and I thought it would be cool to make a thread about movies that are on instant cue that may have flown under your radar. I've found that every once in a while I take a chance on a movie I've never heard of and discover a gem. I thought this thread might be a neat way for us to share our discoveries and recommend them to our community. Here are a few of mine(everyone please share!:)):
Ex Drummer
Bad Boy Bubby(thanks again for the recommendation Elvis!)
Savage County
Encounter At Ravens Gate
This Is England
I'm sure some of these may be obvious to some but I had never even heard of them before horror.com or netflix. I'm sure we will run into a bit of that but it is definately not worth fighting over!;)

I will check out Ghost Story though. I had a hard time finding Fright Night 2-I had to download a bit torrent.
Funny story...My dad took me to see Lifeforce at the movies...I don't think he expected all the nudity...He still apologizes but what the hell? Mathilda was hot!

Mathilda is the best reason to see that film, the special effects certainly weren't very special. Of course being a Golan/Globus production filmed in England it is actually pretty amazing.

Hey - Have you watched Red State yet? You mentioned it was On Instant and I watched it last week (or so) - Was wondering what you thought. We could PM about it so as not to clog up this thread, but it really riled me up and I want to hear more feedback about it.

Exactly. It almost felt like a watered down version of A Serbian Film or Gutterballs. Shocking me doesn't make the movie good...I was so pissed...How long did us Kevin Smith fans wait for this friggin movie? I am CERTAIN i heard about this flick for atleast 2 years....The wait ended in an utter pile of shit, imo. He could have atleast gave Mewes a cameo........

I didn't think Smith was going out of his way to shock. I thought Red State was like the In The Line Of Duty TV movies of the late 80s early 90s (Ambush In Waco being the obvious one) but with a modern twist i.e combining elements of recent horror films like Eden Lake, Frontier(s) and Wolf Creek. I thought it was an effective homage to those flicks melding fact with pure fiction to make a entertaining movie.

How? Arguably those two flicks only intention was to shock the audience. Completely different kettle of fish IMO from Red State which had a few harsh moments but didn't venture into territory any where near as extreme or vile.

Agreed...I may have used two movies a little extreme as an example. On the same token though this is a hot topic in my area(not the movie as much as the topic). I live less than 2 hours from Wichita. I respect anyones religion as long as it doesn't intrude on my or my families lives. The things this Westboro Baptist or whatever its called does intrudes on my emotions. I felt the film did the same. Maybe thats a good thing but on the other hand I wouldn't want anyones religion being defamed(not that I am saying Smith did that).
Extreme and vile were both there for me. Not necesarily as graphic as the films I mentioned but more implied.
I guess the movie just struck me wrong...like it was using the religious fanatics in my state to further paranoia. I'm having a bit of a hard time trying to summarize exactly what I mean....I hope I haven't pissed anyone off....:(

Brand-spanking new!
I think it's a good move for Netflix - They will own the rights to the new episodes, so if you want to see Arrested Development you'd have to watch it on Netflix.

The nightmare/dream sequences in the film are actually quite terrifying.

I think I was in the wrong mood when I saw it - It was a dreary grey Sunday and I decided to watch this bleak tale of corruption - No one was likeable, themes of RELIGION IS EVIL EVEN PAGAN RELIGION BECAUSE ABSOLUTE POWER CORRUPTS ABSOLUTELY were really overwrought and hit you over the head with it. It was dark, bleak, and ultimately unhappy, which is how I felt at the end of it. I don't think it was a bad movie, in fact, it was probably a good movie (good acting, great production value, etc.), it just didn't really do anything for me except make me cranky. The boyfriend liked it, and I guess I can see why other people do too, but I just wasn't in the mood.

Balada triste de trompeta (The Last Circus) (2010)
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/b/b9/Last_circus.jpg
Ho-lee cow.
This is one of the craziest film experiences I've had in some time. A fairly tongue-in-cheek allegory of extremes in Franco's Spain, it's told through the story of a twisted love triangle between a sad clown, a happy clown, and a beautiful trapeze artist that is at once completely absorbing, engrossing. The film just flies by.
It reminds me a bit of The Cook, The Thief, His Wife, and Her Lover, too, in that it represents these extremes with its production. In the real sense of the word, this film completely absurd. Every frame is loaded with color and movement, the darkest humor, and (sometimes goofy) extravagant violence. It is that rare, spot-on blend of eye-rolling pulp and art-house spectacle. And it's held all together with a clear sincerity. The ideas and inspirations behind the film are strong. Performances are great, the cinematography is a marvel. Even without its commentary, The Last Circus is an unbelievable work.
However, it does suffer at times from some conspicuous CGI, but for me at least, it was easy to forgive.
Certainly recommended for Chrono, Elvis, Ferox, V, Roshiq (although you've probably already seen it), and anyone with an adventuresome cinematic spirit.

Brilliant series! Probably my favorite tv show of all time. I've seen every episode and both movies atleast 3 times each!
I'm finding more and more that I enjoy comedy series from Canada, Australia, and the UK more than I do US sitcoms. They seem fresher, edgier, and just plain hilarious!

I found the Human Centipede through Netflix and was pretty disappointed by how tepid it was but I rebounded quickly with a new current favorite, Hobo With A Shotgun. I don't know if it technically classifies as horror as it's really a grindhouse/exploitation flick but man the gore was rewarding. I would highly recommend Hobo to anyone who can appreciate a gritty, gratuitous blood fest.

This is one of those rare, quality indie horror flicks. While it does have its faults (someone who shaved his head instead of having bald makeup, for example... And at some some pretty poorly exposition), it's unique, has genuinely creepy moments, and had enough mystery and weirdness that I was just glued to the screen.
When I say "quality little indie horror flicks," it's of the same ilk of Dead End, yellowbrickroad, The Caller, etc.
I would say that the only dissatisfying part of the film was the ending, but it's probably because the story was so bizarre I'm not sure how they could have made it satisfying (and believe me there were a couple of cliched places that it could have gone but it didn't), so definitely cheers to that. Reminded me a LOT of yellowbrickroack in that it's bizarre, keeps your interest, and the end leaves you sort of perplexed.
Honestly, when it came down to it I really liked this. Wish that more horror films split the mold like this. Hats off.
3.75/5.

The former is cute and I wish I'd seen it when I was younger (makes me feel O L D) - Definitely a trip to see James Franco, Jason Segel, and Seth Rogan all playing high school kids... And I love seeing cameos from the likes of a young (AND ADORABLE) Rashida Jones and a SUPER-young Shia LaBeouf.
As for the latter, it's a pretty incredibly well-written drama that meanders into soap opera territory. I have a hard time selling it without sounding cheesy, but it's incredibly addictive and the acting is great (though sometimes I think our leads act too creepy/suspicious to be as "likeable" as they are.)

It is easiest on PC as you can use something like DNS Jumper (http://www.sordum.net/4573/dns-jumper-v1-0-4/) to adjust your settings in one click..
Just google what settings are still working and Bingo. The US version is such much better. Weirdly - there are more Brit TV shows on the American Netflix that I wanted to watch than on the UK one..

My favorite two Netflix gems of late have been:
Lovely Molly: One of the better "slow burn" films I've seen in a long time.

Both films are well acted and well directed. Very much worth the time.

Vanishing on 7th Street
Stars Hayden Christensen, Thandie Newton, and John Leguizamo. Full of atmosphere, interesting story, not your cookie-cutter Hollywood ending. Don't expect a lot of action or excitement. Just a well-told story. Except that it never says why this happened. But, I definitely recommend it.

Grave Encounters. It's a paranormal activity type movies but it's about a "ghost hunters" kinda crew who really end up in a haunted hospital. Ending was kinda lame and the movie kinda dragged but it had some pretty good suspense and some good jump scenes. I say maybe a 7 out of a 10. I haven't really seen anything else on there that's worth mentioning.

So I've posted this^ before i really combed the thread. Made me think of a few others.
Gacy house - another paranormal activity type movies but it was alright. Nothing to great but had a few scenes that made you want more.
Absenti (spelling?) - Kinda cool movie overall and the spin on the children story is what kinda made me like it. thought that was kinda original.
Necromentia (spelling?) - I found that on redbox. Not really a 10 movie but really weird and strange and idk. Wasn't really scary but idk just one of those movies you want to watch once and make other people watch it to see their expressions. I still have the "Hi kids, I'm Mr. Skinny" image in my head.

I don't know if anyone mentioned it, but one movie on Netflix is Rumpelstiltskin. I know this movie is pretty cheesy, but I actually liked it. I thought it was pretty funny and I can never pass up the mythological figure in the "Modern World" genre. I've been enjoying the Fantomas serials. Truly old school serial storytelling, improbable, funny and smart.

Those are so great. If you dig them, you should check out Feuillade's other serials, especially Les vampires and Judex.

Speaking of Josh Whedon (maker of cabin in the woods). Like some have posted, this isn't horror, but I saw a very good short x-men anime series written by Josh Whedon called the astonishing x-men. It's for adults, but it's not risque, it's just not kiddie. They are short 11 min episodes done in an unusual anime style. On netflix.
I also just saw recently saw Passion of the Christ for the first time on netflix last night.
