J.J. Abrams is ready to engage.

EW has confirmed that the insatiable media multi-hyphenate has signed on to direct the sequel to his 2009 hit Star Trek.

The first film’s screenwriters Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci are penning the screenplay with producer Damon Lindelof, and the main cast — including Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto — are all set to return.

The untitled sequel was originally scheduled to come out June 2012, but the film has moved off of that date to give the writers enough time to polish the script.

Abrams’ first crack in the captain’s chair netted the reboot the highest-ever grosses for a Trek movie, pulling in $257 million domestically, and $385 million worldwide.

J.J. Abrams’ STAR TREK Sequel Titled STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS

Though production wrapped a few months ago, director J.J. Abrams’ sequel to his stellar 2009 reboot Star Trek has been unsurprisingly shrouded in a heavy veil of secrecy. We know literally nothing about the plot, we haven’t seen any official images, and we still don’t know for sure what baddie Benedict Cumberbatch is playing.

Through much debate and discussion among the film’s creative team, TrekMovie has confirmed with multiple sources that Star Trek Into Darkness is the title that Abrams and co. have settled on. The absence of a colon in the title is by design, but it feels a bit off for the Star Trek franchise.

Star Trek Into Darkness opens in 3D on May 17th, 2013.

As we await the release of the first trailer and 9 minute prologue for J.J. Abrams' Star Trek Into Darkness, Paramount Pictures has revealed the first official synopsis from the hotly-anticipated sci-fi sequel, which gives us a brief insight into the threat facing Captain Kirk (Chris Pine) and the crew of the USS Enterprise in the follow-up to the 2009 relaunch.

In Summer 2013, pioneering director J.J. Abrams will deliver an explosive action thriller that takes Star Trek Into Darkness. When the crew of the Enterprise is called back home, they find an unstoppable force of terror from within their own organization has detonated the fleet and everything it stands for, leaving our world in a state of crisis.

With a personal score to settle, Captain Kirk leads a manhunt to a war-zone world to capture a one man weapon of mass destruction. As our heroes are propelled into an epic chess game of life and death, love will be challenged, friendships will be torn apart, and sacrifices must be made for the only family Kirk has left: his crew.

Also reprising their roles alongside Chris Pine are Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana, Karl Urban, Simon Pegg, John Cho, Anton Yelchin and Bruce Greenwood, while new additions to the cast include Benedict Cuumberbatch (The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey), Alice Eve (Men in Black 3), Peter Weller (RoboCop), Nazneen Contractor (24), Noel Clarke (Doctor Who) and Nolan North (Young Justice).

Star Trek Into Darkness hits cinemas on May 17th, 2013.

Goodness I've had the first one on dvd for about two years yet still haven't watched the entire thing. I tried watching it once but only made through about 20mins of it. It just looked like they had dumbed Star Trek down to a boring action flick.Does the first film get better?. Is it worth trying again I might have been in the wrong mood maybe
