Thought I would share an email I got from my cousin in Florida - he works for an emergency management company, something like FEMA.

"Hey cuz....looks like you need to be stocking up on your supplies for the storm....buy extra batteries, buy several gallons of water for you for at least 3 days (get yourself between 4 to 6 gallons for your use during that timeframe)....not sure if your stove is electric or gas....if electric, purchase some sterno cans (get some matches too)....your can heat your food on the stove....lift the burner coil up and place a can of sterno underneath (if you use the small cans, you can alter the heat by adding up to 3 cans under the burner)....it may cook/heat a bit slower, but trust me, if works....we do it all the time....the flame won't affect the coil and it is all "contained" so you can heat some canned foods up on your stove top.

The day before it hits....scrub out your bathtub real good and give it a good once over with Chlorox....then fill the tub with water....that water you can use later on if the power goes out and the water treatment plants go down, you can fill your toiler reservoir with water from the tub and "power" your flushing action with it....you can also use that water for bathing and cleanups (use your bottled water for drinking and cooking only).

Fill your car up with gas....pull some cash out to have (remember, the power will go out there will be no electrical powered equipment, no ATMs, no cash registers working)....buy yourself some junk food (comfort food) - chips, snacks, cookies, and such....trust me if you are just sitting around waiting for the power to be restored, you will appreciate munching on some junk food (screw the diet for the duration)....be sure you have a hand operated can opener....get some bread, some peanut butter and other non refrigerated food stuffs....get a few flashlights (some of those area type lanterns work well)....avoid candles....if you have ot use lit or burning lights, get an oil lamp....if you don't have some books to read, go get some....if you need drugs (Tylenol, Motrin or whatever), get it now.

A portable radio (battery operated) will do wonders for you too....be sure your computer is charged and your cell phone (if you do burn it up, you can recharge it in your car)....be sure you have an "old" style land line telephone (that is NOT dependent on electricity like a wireless/cordless phone), just a cheap old plug-into-the-wall telephone, if the cell towers go down or the power goes out you have a good chance to use the land line....if cell coverage is affected or limited, you can get out with a text message better than a voice line. Buy some baby wipes for casual cleanups for yourself.

We stocked up yesterday - At some point yesterday afternoon, the hurricane was projected as coming directly through my down.

Picked up water, Power Aide (of course), canned goods to last us a month, propane for our camping stove, and flashlights.

And lots of wine and beer. Cheers, Newb. ;)

I went to the store today to stock up. People are already in panic mode, so I didn't want to leave it any later.

I don't recall Long Island being hit by a hurricane since 1985. A rare treat indeed.

Ah, Hurricane Gloria, I remember her well. I was stationed at Plattsburgh Air Force Base and one of the bases in New England (I think) was evacuated and all of their planes and personnel were brought to PAFB. Good times! ;)

Well it's looking like we're definitely getting something. I had to clear off my deck last night and empty some water from the pool.Sunday should be interesting. A good day for horror movies but most likely will lose power.

The casinos in Atlantic City have started shutting down. You know it's serious if the casinos shut down! :D

I'm going to give my laptop a good charge so that I can watch movies on it.

I see Hammerfan is okay. We made it with barely a scratch. Hopefully other people in the path will check in today.

Yep, we made it through Hurricane Irene without a scratch. The power went out on Saturday night about 10, when I woke at 5:30 Sunday morning it was backon.

newb? How'd you make out?

Me too, EC. From what they were showing on the news, it looked like New England really got hammered!

Came out unscathed. Didn't even lose power. The only damage was to my beer supply.:D
