...

Zombie epedemic. You (or someone in your party) has been bitten on an extremity (hand, arm, foot)... Do you cut it off in an effort to save them? Or do you just kill them assuming that the infection spread immediately and they're doomed?

...

The only zombie movie that I've seen wherein the bitten limb was removed was the original Day of the Dead, and I would argue that the character involved went crazy before he became infected, and that his actions can be chalked up to insanity as opposed to zombie infection...

Are there other zombie movies wherein an infected limb is cut off and the victim is still infected? Or do they survive?

Clearly my zombie mythos knowledge is limited, therefore I bring this question to you, my Horror.com officianados...

NOTE: This is clearly coming to a head (heh heh) based on my current predicament in The Apocalment... But it's something that I've wondered previously as well.

I wouldn't cut off the limb. I couldnt be sure if that would do that job and theres no way i would be able to do that to myself. As for killing myself or a team member i'm not sure what i would do. I might be able to kill them but i can't really answer that unless i was put in the situation. I might just tell them to leave or let them kill themself. That's the kind of choice i would want for myself as well.

In Dead Snow, the guy cut his arm off after being bit but we never got to see if that worked or not.

I'm thinking cutting off the infected limb would probably not help much. The infection would likely enter your bloodstream when you recieved the bite and by the time you got round to removing the limb it would be too late. I guess you might slow the rate of infection down, but probaby no more effective than if you just cleaned and dressed the wound. My theory is based on comparing a zombie bite to a snake bite and sucking the poision out of a snake bite is next to useless. That said, I't dont really hurt to try, considering the alternative.

If it wasnt me that got bitten I would be looking to put as much distance between myself and the bitten person as possible or suggest they do the heroic thing and either create a diversion while I made a dash to the chopper or let me use them as a meat sheild on the way to the chopper.... The real kick in the balls would come when I got myself to the chopper safely and realised I couldnt actually fly the thing.

i would chop the limb off, but depends if he or she got bit in the face :p, i think it is worth a try if u want to live bad enough and if it dint work u can allways be shot.and yes i would shoot a mate and i would expect the same for me,cus i would not have the balls to shoot myself.

Very good point - I didn't know how quickly snake venom truly infiltrated the blood stream. Crap.

Are there movies where we see an appendage cut off and they still become infected?

u would need to guard the chopper man with ur life :D.
i think sucking the poision out could still be dangerous, u could risk getting infected urself, i would not risk it myself.

I'd make somebody else cut it off - couldn't do it myself, but it would have to be done. THEN AGAIN, if we don't have correct equipment, odds are you'll die from blood loss as is, so it might be best to put it off until you have the right stuff.

I'd off the whole person. :o

It takes roughly one solitary minute for blood to circulate through the entire body. If someone was bit in the arm, it would take about 30 seconds to hit the heart. Once it enters the bloodstream, that would be it. One could feel their own pulse and get an idea how fast the blood flows (average adult pulse about 70 to 75 beats per minute).

Don't recall to many zombie flicks where this occurs. Perhaps Braindead but they went a bit overboard removing limbs in the opening after the dude was bit by the monkey :D

Word.

I'd wait for them to turn then POW!

Haha, I was going to mention that! That scene is brilliant - Oh no, we found ANOTHER bite - off with the limb!

No I don't cut it off. I find it rather useful. And I'd much rather not get bitten there!

On a more serious note, there's no use cutting off a limb or a body part after being bitten. The infection of the bite is pumped straight to the heart, and back into the entire body within a matter of seconds (a minute, max.). You are already doomed the moment you are bitten.

The only thing to cut off after being bitten would be your head. The one resting on your neck, on top of the shoulders. Yes, that one.
