when i was young these movies realy disturbed me, but i recently watched them again, some scenes are fake but i think some scenes could be real.

does anybody know if the movies are just fake or real ?

and your thoughts on these movies.

I've mixed feeling about Faces of Death.

It a way they were the last nail in an all ready dying genre (Mondo films) - they led the way for a ton of souless crap - Traces of death/Death Scenes or any othe combo of films with death in the title.

I still think that FOD does still hold some of the charm and naivety of the old school Mondo film - who cannot appreciate Dr Gross' search for the meaning of life and Death.

As you said the films are a mixture of faked scenes and real ones - I think the fact they tried to pass reinacted or set up scenes as real is one of the reasons I like it.

Its been a while since I've seen the series but in the 1st one, alll the executions are fake. The gas chamber one was an employee of the production company. The monkey brains is fake too.

I've never seen Faces Of Death, but I'd probably like to know what exactly is real in them. I really don't want to see a bloated corpse washed up on the beach or the end results of a short walk off a tall building.

Have you ever seen a Mondo film?

I don't think so. I wasn't sure if they were plotless torture films like Guinea Pig or were really trying to pass themselves off as snuff films.

i think they were trying to pass themselves of as snuff movies.they are pointless movies, but were a big woo factor to watch when we were kids,i believed it all to be real back then, but now i was trying to work out what is real and not.if you not ever seen faces of death have a watch, but you might get bored now.only thing i hated in it is watching some animals getting hurt or killed, that upset most, but knowing what is real or not.

Yeah, I was afraid of that. I can't stand the non-simulated animal killings/cruelty. I saw a trailer for Africa Addio and the sight of hippos and elephants getting shot made me sick.

i agree with u, i hate all that stuff, they used real animals alot in the 70's and 80's.i hate cannibal holocaust because all the animal killing, just to make a movie.

No - a Mondo movie is a exploitative Documentry. They pretend to be 'educational' but are really just showing content for shock or cheap entertainment..

Mondo Cane was the first of the genre.

I never really got the point of those movies. Are we just watching someone die? Is there no plot? Why would someone want to watch that, real or fake?

I guess i understand it from a kids point of view but that cant be their target audience so if that's the only people it works on, then thats not good at all.

No - there is no plot - they are documentries.

Some of them are entertaining in an exploitative way - thas a pretty good reason to watch. I thought Africa Addio was pretty good (though I'm not mad on animal killing) and The Killing of America is an excellent mondo film.

I'm not much of a fan of the newer post FOD ones. I miss the condecending narrator trying to educate us about native cultures etc.

Jacopetti & Prosperi's films are an interesting bunch (these are the 2 that Deodata was having a poke at in Cannibal Holocaust) - go knows what they were thinking when they made 'Farewell Uncle Tom'.

If anyone is interested 'The Godfathers of Mondo' is really worth watching (more so in many ways than the actual films).
