Dude really? Nightmare on Elm Street, Let The Right One In, Dracula, The Howling, Carrie, Sleepy Hollow, and The Omen? REALLY?
Lol seriously though, you're free to like and dislike whatever you want. I agree with you on 28 Days Later as i didnt like that but i did like 28 Weeks Later.
For me the biggest one has gotta be The Shining. I hated it and everyone loves that movie. Also The Hills Have Eyes Remake was raved about and i thought that was terrible. I'll come up with some more later.

Sorry, That list is totally wack. How could anyone like "28 Weeks Later" better than "28 Days" ? "Weeks" had a lot of action but a very silly plot, "Days" seems the opposite. Less action, more plot character driven. I don't know anything, the mom being the "carrier" in the ending was lame for me. TWwwwwwwwiiiist.
"Let the right one in" is a masterpiece, maybe a teenager might be bitter towards the romance/horror. It's a non-gay twilight haha. But it's great... in my opinion.
Zombieland is funny too. You shouldn't dislike so much for being "popular". You'll miss out on a lot in life...in my opinion.

I didnt like Days because i hate it when zombie movies go the military route and by that i mean the survivors happen upon a group of military men who take them back to their base and they think they are safe but the soldiers are crazy and attack them and such showing that humans are the bigger monsters and blah blah blah.
I know Weeks focused on the military too but that was more them trying to clean it up and keep it hidden then it was just them going batshit crazy. Also i liked the immune plot line. It added something to the story.
SPOILERSPlus the scene where the husband kisses the wife, turns and rips her to pieces is horrifying and really stuck in my mind
END OF SPOILERS
Also and i know this is a little homophobic of me but i really didnt need to see Cillian Murphy's dick.

Villain there's nothing homophobic about not wanting to see Murphy's dick-a while back in another thread someone said that Murphy begged the director to let him show his dick.
I hope this doesn't end up in another argument but off the top of my head-
Monkey Shines
Young Frankenstein
The Raven (60s one)
The Tomb Of Ligeia
Shaun Of The Dead
Various remakes I'm not going to promote
I Vampiri
Rear Window

Most of them I kinda get why you didn't like them, and I also disliked Carrie. The novel was much more disturbing (not saying it was terrible. Just not worth all the excessive hype it got (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Twilight_Saga_(film_series)). Zombieland wasn't as good as it sounded either. Only things I would take off your list is the original A Nightmare on Elm Street and Let The Right One In, but hey, can't change your opinion right? :)
Invasion of the Body Snatchers is also one I never liked, and likely never will.
One I liked but think was slightly too overhyped was the American version of The Ring. Loved it, but would've expected more after what was promised. And that;s about it :p .

I agree, like i said in another thread, I really like those video cam movies like Rec., Quarantine, Blair Witch Project, Cloverfield, Paranormal Activitiy(s), The Fourth Kind...etc.
For me it makes it seem that much more real and Im more likely to jump or get scared by it, and it takes away the corniness from the more quality filmed movies

Yeah, it's like something you feel can never get old because of the extra dimensions it adds to the movie. No professional camerwork here; just a group of terrified people capturing the horrors around them.
Awesome :D

Even though I hate paranormal activity. I love Quaritine and Rec, but I don't like clover field that much, and didn't really like the fourth kind, it seemed like they were trying to hard to make you believe everything, which made me feel like it was more fake, cause if it were real they wouldn't need to try and persuade me.

Yeah i appreciated what he tried to do with the first one but he put way too much of his own style into the second one. None of the characters were the same anymore. That would've been fine but it didnt even connect with the first one he did so it was just stupid.

Even though i dont like remakes there really is no point in keeping the same cast. The whole point of remakes is to do the movie differently while also paying homage to the original. If you just keep the same people, then you're essentially just making the same movie. The trick is to cast someone who can do justice to the role and unfortunately that's where a lot of horror movies and really any movie being remade that has a stong character in the original falls short. Everyone is going to be upset by the casting and thats going to negatively affect the movie. That's why unless you're going to do a remake right, you just shouldnt do it.

Agreed, and thats why for the most part I am against all the remakes coming out. In the case of Freddy and Ash those characters are so iconic to their respective franchises, and to me both are in direct relation to what made those characters so memorable. Neither should be remade they were both done right the first time.

I agree and its a big reason why i hate remakes. I was really upset when i heard they were remaking Nightmare but i actually like Jackie Earl Haley and i wanted to see what he could do. I thought he was interesting but as a whole i hated it. There needs to be more good original horror movies with strong characters and villains instead of just countless remake after remake.

The problem with most the remakes coming out is they are remaking movies that were done right the first time. Movies like Friday the 13th, Halloween, and A nightmare on elm street were great the way were. The only remake I have liked that comes to mind was Dawn of the Dead, and to your point Snyder did it right he took a concept of zombies in a mall and gave his own take on it.

Bram Stoker's Dracula is a little pretentious. I liked it because of Gary Oldman but i much prefer Nosferatu (My favorite), The Bela Lugosi version and of course the Christopher Lee Hammer ones much better then it.
And there's also the version with Frank Langella. Another of my favorite versions.

I know my list is going to very unpopular, but that's okay.
Halloween (1978)
Night of the Living Dead (1968)
Dawn of the Dead (1978)
The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974)
The Blair Witch Project
Paranormal Activity
Black Christmas (1974)
I do understand the impact these movies had on the horror genre. And I'm glad most of them were made. I just don't like them at all!
Good job you didnt say Young Frankenstein or Monkey Shines like I had-then you would have really been in trouble lol.

I think you can't go wrong with any of them-avoid at all costs his version of Phantom At The Opera and The Wax Mask

let the right one in
omen (i thought rosemary's baby was better)
carrie
zombieland

sorry people but i hated these movies
I agree with...
The Howling
Wicker Man (sorry, Wicker!)
Nightmare on Elm Street (though it's growing on me like a tumor with every viewing)
28 Days Later (and I too loved the sequel - I just thought that 28 Days could have been much, MUCH better)
Also mentioned that I agree with:
High Tension
The Strangers
Halloween 2 (original)
I also have to add, in terms of films that are incredibly popular in the Horror Community (here as well) that I really can't stand are Hershel Gordon Lewis (couldn't get through Wizard of Gore) and typical Giallo (couldn't get through Tenebre). I guess I just don't 'get' those movies.

What was probably missing for you was that even though it was a homage to 80's kid friendly monster movies, it wasnt an 80's kid friendly monster movie. It came out in 2011 so of course it's still going to feel like a movie from today no matter how hard it tried to be a nostalgic trip even though i felt like it did a very good job succeeding in doing that.

Phantasm is one of those films that I know a lot of people liked, but I don't care for it at all. It just felt particularly silly watching those Ewok-ish characters run around and the little sci-fi twist just felt wrong with the supernatural set-up.
My biggest problem really has to be that the movie felt pretty straight-forward and obvious, lacking any sort of in-depth storytelling.

I actually feel very bad about myself, like I'm an idiot or something, but I find no enjoyment in The Evil Dead. I impulse bought the DVD of it before I had ever seen it because it has always been raved about, and then I watched it a few times and realized I had a DVD of a movie I would never watch again.
I also feel like nobody could possibly respect my opinion on anything when I say I was thoroughly unimpressed with:
The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974)
Don't Look Now (1973) [I have a hard time accepting this as a horror film]
The Howling (1981) [one of my least favorite werewolf films]
The Haunting (1963) [too early for this forum, but it's on my "most overhyped" list]
and I've seen The Reflecting Skin often discussed as a great horror movie, but that is NOT a horror film. It's not, and anybody who says otherwise is more stupid than me for not liking The Evil Dead and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. I feel similar with Picnic at Hanging Rock, though there is at least some intrigue with that one from a horror/supernatural/whatever angle.

No, I'm fully aware of that. If a lot of people did agree with me on these movies then I wouldn't feel awkward about my opinions. And I, as much as anyone, understand being annoyed when people say that a movie I love isn't as good as I think it is. Recently I've just come to understand the debate over Alien and Aliens, which I both just recently viewed. I think Alien is amazing, a seminal work under any context, whereas I find after viewing Aliens that I don't find it on the same level of Alien and think that its acclaim is a bit exaggerated. I liked it, but I'm miffed that people make it out as better than Alien.
I guess my views on these classics makes me stand out, which is better than blending in. Unfortunately since they don't fit in with the general consensus, I worry that no one can take anything I have to say seriously even when I'm spot on with something.

I would have to disagree that my feelings on the movies I discussed equate me to someone who holds McDonald's burgers as the best in American cuisine. What worries me is simply that people shut down too quick on others when they hear something they don't disagree with.
Thus when I voice my opinion, I fear the results I might get. Unfortunately they are still my opinions, and I like to think that I'm smart, so I voice them anyway despite my fears of being lumped into the "loves McDonald's hamburgers" group.

Well, which would you rather debate, my presentation of the movies I made comments about or the movies themselves? Honestly, the reason I act with hurt indignation before anything is said is I suppose I'm trying to skip the "you're an idiot" part of the interaction by admitting that I fear I am an idiot so that we can go right to the real discussion. Apparently my maneuver failed.
Like, for example, how do people honestly consider The Reflecting Skin (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0100469/) a horror film. I think it's an intriguing and beautiful film, but if I'm judging it from a horror perspective I think it's kind of terrible.

Okay...start with a controversial one.
Nightmare On Elm Street - Not the remake (though don't get me started on that...) I've never been a huge fan of slashers as it happens. Halloween is good, but I could never quite get into Friday The 13th. I always thought the sequels shouldn't have dealt with Jason but with people acting "through" Jason, similar to Barbara in the first film, although she may just have been nuts...
Anyway, I digress...
I appreciate the dream logic that was used (I've always had a soft spot for surrealism in horror) but I wasn't that impressed. I didn't find it scary and although I can appreciate Freddie Krueger, he's not my favourite horror character.
Saw - Again, I just never found it terrifying, maybe because I knew how it would end.
Piranha 3D - Tried to sit through this, but it just played like almost softcore porn with a little bit of horror/comedy (which again, I enjoy) thrown in. I found it dumb in an almost insluting way.
The Amityville Horror - So much potential but it never quite gets that exciting for me. I quite liked Amityville II though. Same with The Omen (which I like, but I always felt the sequels were underrated, except Omen IV *shudder*)
Fearonsarms
09-29-2011, 12:42 PM
I completely agree about The Amityville Horror-I thought Amityville 2 was far scarier, more foreboding and unsettling. An excellent example of a sequal superceding the original I thought.
Bluequiet
09-29-2011, 02:55 PM
I understand some peoples contention that Nightmare on Elm Street is overrated/hyped. I am not a member of that club, though, I'm a pretty big fan of it, but for me some of its stature in the horror community has a lot to do with the "right place, right time concept". It's a cultural thing at this point, the movies good but it's assent into horror classic status is not just due to the movie, it's about the myth and it's place within the 80s horror boom.
I'm also pretty down on the Amityville Horror movies. I've only seen the original and the remake, not any of the original sequels, but both movies greatly disappointed me. I seem to remember another, more lower budget, movie based more closely on what the family actually claims to have happened that I was more impressed with. Or maybe I'm confusing it with the dramatization sequences of a history channel show on the subject that also included the real interviews of the family. I don't know. Either way, the Amityville franchise is a big bomb for me in the horror movie sense (though I admit I should try to see some of the sequels)

'The Howling' has gotten alot of love and has achieved classic status, but it's never done it for me. I've always thought 'Hellraiser' was overrated too. Those are the two most popular movies that jump out at me.

Most Hollywood remakes of foreign horror films. Usually Asian horror, but more recently they have been branching out. The remake of "let the right one in" was mentioned earlier in this thread. The original was astounding, and the remake was just, bland. It sucked all of the soul out of the film, and made really unnecessary changes to the relationship of the two kids. The recent reboots of classics have been pretty terrible too, especially NOES. Then there's The Ring and The Grudge etc etc etc ad infinitum. I'm really glad Steven Spielberg and Will Smith decided against remaking Oldboy.
But to save this being a rant about remakes, I'm not liking a lot of the possession movies that have been made recently. The most recent being Insidious. That film was f*cking awful. It started out really promising, and then just fell inside its own ass hole. <spoiler alert> The bit where they go inside the darkness, or the kids head, or whatever it was supposed to be. And they find that demon that looks like the produce of Darth Maul hooking up with Captain Spaulding.... why? Just, why?
The last exorcism was also pretty poor after starting out quite well. It did combine two genres I consider to be overdone though. Possession movies and found footage movies. Then end of that film just gave me the rage though. <Spoiler alert> why did they have to make it cult related? Why couldn't they just keep it as an unknown evil which is massively more terrifying than something a cult could have conjured up?

I didn't like "Drag Me To Hell" it had a tad bit too much puke the only movie that did vomit good was The Exorcist.

The Shining? Wow, one of the best! You're right though, everyone has the freedom to dislike what they want. I also liked 28 Days Later much better than the second. To each his own.

The movie wasnt half as good as the book. And im a fan of the movie. Its just the book thats so good. I like to consider it two entirely separate movies that have the same name. Still wish the complete adaptation of the book made its way onto the big screen though.

There is the miniseries which i actually liked. I just hate that the movie gets credit over the book when the book is so superior.

I love the book, but Stanley Kubrick's film was a masterpiece.

Kubrick is a very polarising director and some people find his work very sterile and clinical (not me, I love him, he's one of my favourites) not to mention that film is very different to King's book (King disliked it for the same reason) but I also think it's a great film.

Are we talking about the remake? The remake made it more romantic, but the original was just about two lonely kids who became friends.
I tend not to like american remakes of movies because of little changes like this. there was no need for it at all. And if I remember correctly, was the remake not released within a year of the original? I think that's testament to people's unwillingness to try anything unfamiliar.
"This film's really good but people wont want want to watch it if they have to read it. Let's completely remake it in English so we can tap that market".
In response to a few of the other points raised in here. 28 weeks better than days??? really? weeks was mediocre at best. Pretty much a standard run of the mill big budget zombie movie. Days was tense, like, really tense. I've watched that film a bunch of times and I still get a bit 'on edge' sometimes.
Devil's backbone was another astonishing movie. I went into it not knowing anything about it, so when the horror angel came in I really really dug it.
Wickerman, Elm St, Omen and Carrie... They're classics. That's all I can say about that really. I think as a horror fan they're a must. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy them all, and my liking of them isn't based on the fact that I should like them, I just don't think I've ever met a horror fanatic that doesn't like them.
Films like Underworld and sleepy Hollow I like, but I can understand why a lot of people don't. They are both very typically "hollywood". Zombieland though, I thought was amazing. It had a perfect balance of comedy and horror. Also, Woody Harleson was astounding in it. That man should have won an award for that performance.
I don't really have many movies I really hate to be honest, apart from remakes (as this post and others I have made all over the forum will probably make clear). Think the last one I physically hated was the Elm St remake.
and finally, the Hills have eyes remake was better??? Behave :p

I understand what you mean. I definitely liked the book better but still felt that the movie was great in its own right. I think we can all agree that the t.v. adaptation they came out with was complete crap even though it was closer to the book.

2001 is my favourite.
Yes it's pretentious but on a technical level it's staggeringly impressive. It's barely aged! Not to mention the really ambiguous ending. I love it when films leave you with unresolved questions.
Shining spoiler alert!
That's actually one of the few things I didn't like about The Shining. I thought the ending spelt it out too much about the Overlook being haunted whereas I think it should've been left to the audience to decide whether that was the case or Jack had just gone crazy.

I agree completely with saw and final destination, it is just really really repetative :S seems more like a list of all the different ways people can get killed.

Best Kubrick movie and imo the best film ever is Dr. Strangelove. It's so funny, but scary in a way too. Great characters, great cast...Dr. Strangelove all the way.
Shining is my second favorite and as far as the end, I def think he went crazy. There are a lot of ways to interpret that photo. I'm not sure it definitively says either way whether it was a strict haunting or insanity.

I honestly hated The Exorcist. I can watch cheesy horror movies; they're entertainig. I thought this movie was funny, but not in a good way if that makes any sense?
I love movies about exorcisms, and I know that this is considered a classic but it just doesn't appeal to me at all. I heard stories about how terrifying a movie it was and was expecting something pretty scary but was super dissapointed. I think for it's time it may have been scary, just not in this generation so much.
Not saying it's a bad movie, I just personally didn't like it.

Dr. Strangelove would definitely fall into my third favorite, so as it goes here are my top five favorite Kubrick movies:
1. A Clockwork Orange
2. The Shining
3. Dr. Strangelove
4. Full Metal Jacket
5. Believe it or not, Eyes Wide Shut
I know you are all saying how could I choose Eyes Wide Shut over 2001: A Space Odyssey. Look, Eyes Wide Shut had more ambiance to it, more intrigue, more Kubrick than any of his others, I love it.

Eyes Wide Shut has some amazing scenes but it's quite messy. I think I'd like it more if it didn't have Kidman and Cruise in it. Terrible actors Kubrick must've been ripping his hair out dealing with those two. The scene with Kidman smoking a joint is one of the most laughably SHIT performances to ever hit the screen.
I love movies about exorcisms
...but you hate The Exorcist? Weird. For me I think aside from The Exorcist that subgenre is rubbish.
I didn't think it was scary at all till I saw in on the big screen where it kicked my ass and made me really unsettled. It really did deserve the Oscar for best sound... it was incredible in the theatre and tripped me right out.

The first movie that pops into my head is The Blair Witch Project. I tried to like that movie. I really, really did. Didn't find it scary or well acted or any of the things normally attributed to it. I also laughed at the ending, which I guess wasn't the proper response because people gave me the evil eyeball.
An older one that comes to mind is The Legend of Hell House, man that movie might be considered a haunted house classic by some, but I thought it was ridiculously silly and funny as hell. Also Nightmare on Elm Street never grew on me. I don't get what people see in that movie. Don't Look Now and Sweet Alice both sucked.
Newer ones would have to include the entire Saw franchise, the entire Hostel franchise and that awful Texas Chainsaw Massacre remake.

1. The Exorcist - saw this with my family when it first came out. We just sat there laughing our asses off. I watched it years later to see if I just didn't get it. It still wasn't scary. But, LINDA BLAIR is HOT.
2. The Blair Witch Project - The only way this crap could be scary or entertaining is if the footage was actually real. It wasn't. It doesn't look authentic, and anyone who is being chased by a creature and holds onto the camera deserves to die.
3. Every Rob Zombie movie. He replaced character with fuck. He replaced plot with mother fucker, and he replaced fright with fuck, fuck, fuck. After 25 fucks, I'm no longer intimidated, I'm bored.

Sorry. I was 13 I think when it first came out. It was hyped up the wazoo. It made the top news story for days: people fainting, nurses needing to be in the lobby. People running out of the theatre screaming. Not for our family. Even on a religious level it did nothing for us. I did like her head going around. For the time, the sexual aspects (especially it being a child) were breaking boundaries. But, just not scary.

I watched The Exorcist for the first time at an early age, probably around 10 or 11. I hated it, I remember thinking it was boring and not the least bit scary.
