Johnny Depp is...Carl Kolchak

July 11, 2011
Johnny Depp is intent on reviving old genre television shows.
He's filming Dark Shadows right now. Later, he may star in a Disney-produced big screen feature adaptation of The Night Stalker.
That's right. If it all works out, he'll play Carl Kolchak, the journalist who always got mixed up in the supernatural in the Kolchak: The Night Stalker television series. Darren McGavin played Kolchak.
Deep will co-produce through his production outfit Infinitum Nihil.

I hope not. I like Depp, but he's not right for Kolchack.

Exactly what I was thinking. Not sure who I'd cast but Depp just doesn't seem right... be nice if they left a few of the classics alone.
agree.....I'm a big Depp fan....but not in this role. Maybe Aaron Eckhart or Thomas Jane.

Disney is setting Edgar Wright to direct The Night Stalker, the remake of the ABC telepic and series that the studio is developing as a potential star vehicle for Johnny Depp to play intrepid tabloid reporter Carl Kolchak.
Depp and his Infinitum Nihil partner Christi Dembrowski will produce.
Wright, best known for directing Shaun of the Dead and Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World, comes aboard before the studio has set a writer, and he will oversee and shape the project with Depp and Dembrowski from the ground floor.
As Deadline revealed, the film took root at the studio last summer, borne out of Depp and Dembrowski’s fond memories of the original 70s movie and series that starred Darren McGavin. He covered crime for a tabloid and his cases always led to supernatural perpetrators that included zombies, vampires, werewolves and aliens. Of course, neither his editor nor anyone else would believe him or allow him to run what seemed like outrageous stories. But Kolchak would put himself in grave danger each episode.
David Kennedy will be exec producer of the film. Since there’s no writer attached yet, we can all assume that this one won’t be happening immediately. Both Depp and his new directing pal are busy men, with the actor involved in numerous films bubbling away on the backburner as both star and producer and Wright has a few gestating projects of his own.
The subject matter will be tailored to fit Disney’s family film mandate and likely a PG-13 rating, but the idea of Wright’s hyper-reality style and Depp’s gift for constructing quirky characters sounds like a good match.
Wright is also attached to direct Ant-Man for Marvel Studios and Disney.
The Night Stalker was one of two films that Depp and Dembrowski set at the studio. The other was a drama about the Midnight Ride made by Paul Revere to warn Colonial militia of the impending British invasion that made him a seminal figure in the American Revolutionary War. Jon Brown and Infinitum Nihil’s Margaret French-Isaac will be executive producers.
Depp next saddles up for Disney with Armie Hammer in the Gore Verbinski-directed The Lone Ranger. Depp will next be seen in Tim Burton’s Dark Shadows, which will spook us all on May 11.

Edgar Wright's Next Might be 'Kolchak' with Johnny Depp
With Edgar Wright no longer directing Disney and Marvel's Ant-Man his schedule has opened up. According to one specious report, he might just return to Disney.
Wright could return to the Mouse House for Kolchak: The Night Stalker, a property he was developing years ago.
This adaptation of the semi-popular seventies television series followed Carl Kolchak, a tabloid newspaperman who also served as something of a paranormal investigator, getting involved in cases involving werewolves, monsters and boogeymen.
There was comedy not only in star Darren McGavin's incredulity at these monsters, but also the extreme skepticism shown by Kolchak's friends and colleagues. It's very likely the mixture of scares and laughs had a massive impact on Wright's cinematic interests.
The report reminds us that a script by D.V. DiVincentis (Grosse Point Blank) has been completed (and has been for a while), and right now it's only about if Johnny Depp, who's been developing the project for years, signs on the dotted line. Depp is currently filming Black Mass.
Of course, while Wright's involvement is not a guarantee, neither is Depp's.

I'm willing to give this a chance considering all involved. I'll definitely look forward to the trailer before making final judgement.
