Was this the sequel to "Cloverfield" we've waited 3 years for?
Well it's a prequel, and a terrible one at that.
I hated this film. The suspense was overwrought and the film has an overall "Ode to Spielberg" feel about it, especially since it's a bunch of kids who are the focus of the attention.
The "I must save my family" plotline-please someone stick a fork in it already and either come up with a different track for the actors to take or just let it die already. It's what made the Tom Cruise version of "War of the Worlds" almost unwatchable and it did this film no favors.
I'm glad I didn't pay to watch this. One of the lines in the film describing the alien is "It's terrified and hungry and it just wants to go home. When it touched me I knew". Wow, what garbage. For a second there I thought I was watching "District 9" all over again.
I never thought I'd say this about a Spielberg movie, but "Fast and Furious 5" was a better flick.
Ladies and gentlemen, don't spend your hard-earned money on this crap.

There never was any question of it being a sequel.

You realize Spielberg was a producer right?

So you wouldnt save your family?

How did you see it if you didnt pay for it? Also i dont see anything wrong with that quote at all. So often-especially this year-were shown crappy alien invasion movies where the aliens want our water or brains or whatever, i respect it for doing something different.
I never thought I'd say this about a Spielberg movie, but "Fast and Furious 5" was a better flick.
There are worse movies you could've used for your debate.

Definitely a horror movie for the kids and also quite enjoyable for the rest of the family.
Personally I would've liked to see the alien monster get a lot more screentime tho. That would have made Super 8 good instead of just okay in my book.
But we don't see enough horror movies starring kids these days. We should.

I definitely agree with you there. The same goes for novels too. My three favorite horror novels are all about kids fighting a monster/supernatural evil.

You're right about IT, which is my favorite novel by the way but the other two are The Traveling Vampire Show by Richard Laymon and Ghoul by Brian Keene.
I did really like The Shining though. Havent read Summer of Night but it looks like my kind of thing. I'm definitely gonna have to check that out.

"It" is my favorite book of all times as well. That ending...
Summer of night has such an IT feel to it, but it IS completely different horror wise.
Are you telling me Laymond has made a novel that ISN'T about a serial killer??? :D

It was amazing. I have to read it again sometime. I'm really gonna have to read Summer of Night. Haha about Laymon. I know, a lot of his stuff has serial killers but he has a lot of other novels about monsters and things that are really good like his Beast House novels.

Just came back from seeing it. I loved it. I remember growing up watching movies like E.T and The Goonies and how those used to be and this was just like that. It perfectly captured the magic that those movies used to create.
