I felt more enthusiasm for this than Scream 4. Has anyone seen it?

For me, Insidious was an odd, schizophrenic movie experience... Insidious starts off as a brilliant haunted house tale, which actually had me cowering in my seat and gripping Mark's hand (can't remember the last time I went to the theater and was that scared!! Descent, perhaps?)... BUT about two-thirds through the movie, it turns into this bizarre tribute to various foreign sub-genres: We definitely saw some Giallo (intrusive music), Japanese Onryō (walking doll-like dead), and even a tribute to the 60s classic Carniv...al of Souls... It was very very strange to go from a subtle slow-burner to a weird ghoul extravaganza which, ultimately, was just a bit silly.

Unfortunately I have to say that this was really just 2/3's good movie, 1/3 silliness. Not really sure what James Wan (Saw, Dead Silence) was thinking...

I haven't watched it yet because it's not in the swedish theatres yet. (22 days left)
And I don't want to watch a bad cam torrent or something so I'll wait.

Watched it last night and thought that it was a little slow to begin with and very weird building to the climax. I know most haven't seen this, so I'll be as vague as possible to avoid spoiling.

One thing that did occur to me was that, if you watch any of those docs about hauntings eg. A Haunting, then you will find that the movie stays very true to accounts from people who claim to have experienced these disturbances.

I guess, if you believe in possession, spirits, poltergeist etc then you'll embrace the movie and love it, but if you're a bit sceptical, then you'll find it a bit silly.

In short, I thoroughly enjoyed it and would recommend cinema viewing. For me, not as good as Exorcismus but still good.

Saw it last night after reading rave reviews about how it was the scariest movie to date. Was disappointed greatly.

Like a lot of horror movies nowadays, it started out promising, then all of a sudden, 'OoOoOo, lady you have GHOSTS in your house and... they want your son!' Then at that point the movie, like most others that go this route, turn sour.

*Spoiler*

From that point, it goes from at least having a bit of mystery and potential to god-awful stupid. The main villain, so to speak, reminded me of a cirque de solei costume with the idiotic, 'I'm obviously just a guy with circus makeup on trying to look all crazy' expression on his face as he sat in his terror-realm making clown dolls of all things. Makes sense for a demon to spend his time making dolls in a realm cut off from time and space, right?

edit - Now, you could do a lot worse horror-wise, and I did appreciate the lack of sex and nudity, but don't expect to be intrigued or frightened by the movie unless you want the villain from Jeepers Creepers holding a boy's spirit hostage while trying to possess his body.

Whereas I don't wildly disagree with your synopsis, I was wondering, what do you think the spiritual plane/limbo should look like? The bits with the old woman were spooky, the demon was a little surreal but not dreadful compared the demons in The Rite and Season of the Witch and all in all not a bad effort. It's gotta be the hardest setting in horror to pull off.

Yeah, I was really impressed with this one up until the end. I felt like it ran out of steam once the dad went into the other world, whatever it was called. Although there was an awesome scene after that: the set piece with the girl killing her family.
But sweet Moses, this movie had some of the most creative, totally unsettling scare scenes I've seen in a while.

Wow! I don't understand all the "so-so" reviews about Insidious!

This film blew me the fuck away. I have never screamed out loud in a movie theater until I saw this.

Yes, it goes off the rails a bit during the end, and yes there is a little bit of Darth Maul in the evil spirit (at least it wasn't Jar Jar), but you got to realize one thing before you criticize Insidious.

This film was made for $800,000.
That's not a lot of cash to make a feature film.

I've been watching horror movies for 23 years.
Not since The Exorcist have I been this terrified because of a movie.

Could've sworn i posted something for this but i guess i didnt. I loved this movie, it actually managed to freak me out a little bit which is really rare for a horror movie to do. I dont get all the complaints about it. I didnt think there was anything wrong about the ending and i liked how the creature looked. There's always gonna be some kind of comparison nowadays since so many things have been created and i generally thought it looked cool. Its not like it pulled out lightsabers or anything. I thought it was great.
