Saw this last night with my fam. Lots and lots of great action but a little thin on substance. So far, Cloverfield, in my mind, still dominates this genre. Looking forward to Super 8, though.

Battle Los Angeles looks truly awful.
I'm a huge fan of Cloverfield, so I'm excited about the possibilities of Super 8 as well.

Couldn't agree more, Wick.
The tension-building in Cloverfield's first act was outstanding. You see how the inciting incident creeps up and shocks at the same time. It overwhelms both civilian and soldier. Battle, however, exhibits none of this arc development, but rather jumps into a never-ending, myopic firefight.
The writing just wasn't there.

I much prefer Monsters to Cloverfield. I'll eventually get around to checking this one out.

I really enjoyed Battle LA..
The start was excellent. The marines not having a clue what they were facing was really well done. It was tense as hell...
The longer it went on and the more dialogue there was the worse it got. But over all it wasn't bad at all..
When I first saw a trailer for it I thought it was a version of John Wyndham's "The Kraken Wakes"....I want then to make an alternative location BAttle: Limerick..

Saw Monsters. Liked it, but needed more action, I thought.

I understand your opinion but felt it did well as a character driven, not action driven film. I enjoyed it a great deal. I am very much looking forward to Battle LA as well and comparing.

Sistina, you have me there. The characters in Monster were extremely well-drawn.

I watched Monsters yesterday, and I have to say I was really impressed. The only complaint I had was the Monsters in question were so awesome I wanted to see far more of them.
Thank you Sistinas for the recommendation.:)

I did find the initial premise of "Monsters" intriguing, and the scenes with the monsters were very well-done.
But is was a terrible, rambling mess. The plot was scatter-brained, the individuals were not in the least credible, and I've yet to understand what the point of it was.
Just because we hardly get any decent horror films doesn't mean we have to lower our collective standards.
Now on to "Super 8"-I saw the trailer and I'm glad to see the football coach from the TV series "Friday Night Lights" is doing his thing. I think he's a great actor and deserves more work.
Here are some questions-is "Super 8" the prequel to "Cloverfield"?
If so, are any of the original cats from "Cloverfield" involved in the making of this new horror film?
