What are the genuinely scariest albums you own. Dark, gothic, unsettling, chilling and mesmerising. Here's my choices to get this started.

Within The Realm Of A Dying Sun-Dead Can Dance
Closer-Joy Division
Come on Die Young-Mogwai
Garlands-Cocteau Twins
Pornography-The Cure
Suspiria-Miranda Sex Garden
Birds Of Passage-Bel Canto
Blood-This Mortal Coil
The Serpent's Egg-Dead Can Dance
The Holy Bible-The Manic Street Preachers
Is This Desire?-PJ Harvey
The Grotto-Kristin Hersh
Live In NYC-Portishead
Spleen And Ideal-Dead Can Dance
Filigree and Shadow-This Mortal Coil
Into The Layrinth-Dead Can Dance

All I can think of right now :)

WOW. Thank you! I've only had the chance to listen to "Polymorphia" as yet but this is exactly what I was hoping for. The music-atmospheric, gloomy, sense of dread, impending doom. And the video is brilliant! completely fits the music. I will deffo listen to more tracks later when I have time to get cosy and chilled. :):):):):)

Also recommend the "Fever Ray" album not quite to Polymormorphia's ectreme but I see she was listed in the suggestions. This whole FEAR thing that the track you posted was from is deffo one to listen to on headphones in the dark at full blast.

Depending on your frame of mind, anything by Lustmord. Lustmord is pretty much the God of dark ambient. He is easily one of my favorite musicians ever. I never tire of listening to his music.

Many thanks for the links to the classical and movie soundtracks threads-also for the youtube clips (I'll deffo chase up Lustmord). This discussion can include albums by artists who don't usually specialise in scary music-hence my inclusion of the Cocteau Twins debut album (their only goth album they became much lighter later on)and Alpha Centuari (I find that particular album by Tangerine Dream scary but agree not all their stuff is). I have a growing list of albums to check out. I like lying back with a full scary album. Great stuff everyone :)

Soundtrack to THE OMEN. "Ave Satani" is the scariest combination of sounds I've ever heard.

That made me think of the album "Tubular Bells" by Mike Oldfield.

I like Bernard Herrman's soundtracks from The Day the Earth Stood Still and Citizen Kane, and his shower scene music in Psycho. Good to listen to late at night.

I should add Lisa Gerrard's "The Mirror Pool" (1995) to this list.

I bought one the other day, the Jeff Wayne musical version of War Of The Worlds. I had it years ago on an 8-track tape and wore it out. The narration by Richard Burton and the music is awesome. My wife didnt like it, it scared the hell out of her.
