I just really get into it, and some of the games are soooo much fun. Less emphasis on "realism" and graphics and more on story and gameplay. I need a Genesis still but at least I got my SNES & NES working (even if I do need new ones still, they're a little rough). What are your favorite retro games and systems? Act Raiser, Super Mario World, Populous, Super Ghouls & Ghosts, Final Fantasy 3 (6), and Warsong were all a blast and part of my huge list of loved carts. Emulation is great for reliving these games but nothing beats the physical cartridge that's for sure.

Contra, Streets of Rage, Super Mario(especially 3), Golden Axe, Sonic, Altered Beast, just to name a few. I own Wii and Xbox 360 and basically use them just to find old platform classics. I really miss old school arcades too. They always had the best games, plus reminds me of my wasted youth.

Nice haha, but the Coleco was where it was. We even had the little atari add-on for it.

Pfft... I have an old Pong console at home. Still works. Have a light gun attachment for it, so I can shoot square black and white blocks on the screen. Good times.

I really love retro gaming myself. So far I have:

Tempest pong console (circa 1977)
Atari 2600 6 switch woody
2x Commodore 64's with 2x disk drives, cassette decks, etc
1x Amiga 1000 with 2x 2meg expansions, 2x external disk drives, 2x monitors
2x Amiga 2000 with memory expansions, 80286 PC/AT bridge cards, hard drives
1x Amiga 500
1x Amiga 1200 bought new in box. Has a 68030 CPU upgrade with 8mb fast ram
Various old PC's
Sega Megadrive
SNES Skyfox pack
PS2
Amiga CD32

I agree that emulation is great for its convenience, but nothing beats using the original hardware. It feels right.

I don't go quite as retro as some of you guys...though I have fond memories of playing games like the "Roland" series on something called an Amstrad?
Though where it all really started for me...

As a child of the 80's, it's hard for me to not give great props to the consoles that got me into gaming...I was always on the Sega side of things for the first real "console war", having since played a lot on (emu) that and nes, I have to say I still think that the sega master system had a better library of games across the board...that's not to say nintendo doesn't have some absolute classics, just Sega was more my style.
Psycho fox, aztek adventure (bit of a zelda clone...) psychic world, ninja gaiden (a way better version), action fighter, pitpot, phantasy star, the earlier version of sonic the hedgehog and my hero hold very dear memory as the games that gave me my first taste of console gaming...I was hooked...

The the 16 bit era came, which was just, the definitive time of my gaming life.
I can't say I've ever enjoyed an era as much...realism it had not, but bloody good quality gaming it had in spades.
While of course games of today are a far different, more interactive experience, the simplicity of these games let them down in no way.
Flashback is still to this day one of my favourite games, a blend of great gameplay, interesting setting, good challenge level, and very cool storyline. Streets of Rage is a series I can go back to time and again and it's one of the most fun 2 player co-op games there is, hands down. Faery Tale adventure - anyone catch this rpg type thing that had like the most gigantic map ever? great stuff. Shining Force - I hadn't played another top-down rpg since phantasy star that I'd actually liked this much, fucking epic game. All the sonic titles were pretty good though a special spot still goes out to the 8 bit version, and the STRIKE series (desert, jungle, urban) is in my opinion without peer as 'copter games go.
So much comes to mind...
Fucking CANNON FODDER, while I know it wasn't for 16-bit consoles originally it's hard not to give it a shoutout, such a fun game, even for those who don't usually like games of this type. Animaniacs, Lost Vikings, Midnight resistance, Crackdown, Soleil, Rolo (haha it was fun), Beyond Oasis, Earthworm Jim (who didn't love that?) The Stargate game, a version of Ghostbusters that was not only actually playable, but GOOD, the first "new" Castlevania game was awesome...not to mention the first real wave of the arcade ported "VS" games to be seen on console, and the predominately good Disney animated movie based games back before they sucked, they actually used to be quite playable, Aladdin, The Lion King, The Jungle Book were all great in my books...speaking of Disney though, Mickey Mania and the "illusion" series (bridging 8-16 bit) were pretty cool and a bit of a trip, but in my personal opinion "Quackshot" starring Donald Duck is still a solid favourite.
Movie based stuff was (usually) pretty good around this time too. Judge Dredd, and Robocop vs Terminator, Terminator 1&2, Predator 2, True Lies - Thankfully both consoles at the time got most of these, exclusivity wasn't the focus, competition was...
I could honestly go on....and on and on and on about this....but I'll end it with one I just remembered and can't believe I forgot...ZOMBIES ATE MY NEIGHBOURS...fucking so good!

Of course, if I personally want to play these games again I'll usually use an emulator...until they start selling games for those plug n play sega genesis/megadrive consoles they sell now...

Another of my favourite things to do is play on Raine/MAME, with a couple of generic controllers plugged in...so that I can remember a time where there was these things called arcades, and they were actually fun to attend...

You should get one. One of the best gaming computers ever made, the last real "home computer" before everything went x86/Windows.

Cannon Fodder was brilliant. I have played it on Amiga and MS-DOS. Still lots of fun to play.

I love retro gaming, the Castlevania games on Nes and Snes are great, I also love Solstice, Adventures of Lolo, Final Fantasy to many games to mention really.

They have made new clone machines for both Nintendo and Sega games, you can not get machines which run both Master system and megadrive for allot cheaper than an actual real machine would cost and you still then pay with cartridges.

The snes is my favorite console to date. Though I did pick up a ps3, I still prefer older games like Ogre Battle and Metal Marines. I even play old pc games using a dos emulator.

Older games more often had to base themselves on gameplay rather than graphics to make them sell. I prefer Playstation 1 and newer just for the fact that what I play I play for the story and storyline just is more important in games these days. However there are some really good retro games.

If you do dos emulating have you ever tried a game named D? This is a horror game about a woman who is sent to a hospital where her father, a doctor have murdered the patients and sealed himself inside, the main character then have to solve plots and find clues and navigate a supernatural horror environment to get to the truth. I found the game very entertaining.

Great to see so many great games mentioned here. I just have to say that Shining Force 2 is even better than the first an absolutely awesome game. Check out Tales Of Phantasia on the SNES (I think this is its title) the ultimate in top down scrolling RPG's truly outstanding and RPG fans idea of heaven.

Agreed - this stuff is where its at.

Cant remember if it was on here or if one of my friends showed me, but awhile ago I saw a combination system for sale online...I think it had ports for NES, SNES, Genesis and N64 cartridges, if I recall correctly. I've found few similar things online, but not a lot that really looked legit. Anyone have a links to something like this? I'd love to pick one up if they're worth it.

I've heard this multi console is ok. Emulation is the way to go if you're not like me and actually want the physical carts. Get a wired XBox 360 controller and you can use it for SNES, NES, Genesis, arcade, N64 and more. :)

I have a Snes, a Megadrive and a Master system but my Nes is broken. I have considered a close system with a multi cart option so I can play my Nes games again and also play American Sega Genesis and Snes games. I also have a clone famicom, a 2600 which do not want to work and a Commodore 128. I have gameboy, Lynx and Sega Game Gear, though I do not use the Game Gear and the Lynx allot.

I remember slime world on the lynx.

I guess you'd probably be able to call this semi-retro by now.
The other day I got my old PS1 back from my brother who is no longer using it...I have wanted for AGES to play Crash Team Racing again - in my opinion they just haven't made another game of this time (post Mario/CTR anyway) that is as fun to play, no matter how much better they "look".
LOVE the 2 player battles in this, and the standalone game is pretty great too.

Also switched on a copy of "Mortal Kombat Trilogy" and then "Mortal Kombat 4", wow, mk4 really is the starting point of where things went to shit for me...MKT is great to play, reasonable but not killer difficulty level, and just...more fun and better to look at. I have to say, this new MK game that is done more in the style of the older titles looks pretty interesting. Here's hoping it's half decent.

I have coordination difficulties due to Aspergers Syndrome so I was actually recommended to play computer games by my doctor. However it makes me suck at them so for me while I agree the old school Mortal Combat had more flair, they where their own thing and not now that they are on of a number of 3D style arena fighters, for my own sake I am kind of glad for the drop of difficulty as it means I can actually play them, though I did have some fun with one of the Super Nintendo Mortal Combat games back in the day but as it was a rental I do not remember which one it was. I have not looked at the retro looking new MK game yet, but I am planning to.
