Yep - I posted about this movie already in two threads, but, quite frankly, this movie is too fantastic, I think it deserves its OWN thread.
Plus, this place could use some action... And what better ACTION then...

Wow. Just - Wow.
The words "stunning" and "mesmerizing" barely do this film justice. I had heard that this movie was getting rave reviews, but my raised hopes did not even meet how phenomenal this movie is.
To tell you the truth, I was torn about Darren Aronofsky prior to seeing this movie - I found Requiem for a Dream to be incredibly bleak, but a piece of art in its own right. Pi I found interesting, The Fountain I couldn't stand, and The Wrestler was incredibly disappointing for me. But something that I can grant Aronofsky is that he is definitely a director with a distinct point of view, and every film has its own directorial style...
Black Swan is no different - An incredibly intense slow-burner, this character-driven psychological thriller is completely different from Aronofsky's previous works, this time taking a page from Hitchcock. Black Swan is dark, deeply disturbing and passionate, truly a film that will keep you on the edge of your seats. Coupled with the striking backdrop of Swan Lake, this character piece is at times horrifying and breath taking. Quite frankly, I haven't seen Natalie Portman this astute. Ever. Hands down, this is the best movie of 2010.
Best Movie
Best Director
Best Actress
Hands down. Loved it. Go see it. Immediately.
5/5.
Anyone else see this yet? Thoughts? Impressions? General opinions on Aronofsky? I have a friend who refuses to see this movie because he HATES all of Aronofsky's previous films.

Requiem For A Dream was just too MTV for me and I just didn't buy into it. I was really impressed by Pi when it came out. Never got round to The Fountain figuring it would suck.
The Wrestler was incredibly disappointing for me.
YOU CRAYZEEE ;)
I fucking loved The Wrestler and all the positive things I've been hearing about this one has made me eager to check this one out.

Yeah - Requiem didn't really do it for me, either... In terms of The Wrestler, to tell you the truth, I loved the first quarter/third of the movie... I thought that the story and some of the writing was a bit lame - I think that it would have been significantly better with a stronger script. That being said, I do believe that it was artfully directed, so no insult to Mr. Aronofsky. Also, I can understand why people loved The Wrestler. To be fair, I think I went in with incredibly inflated expectations which is why I was disappointed.
Which is funny because I went into this movie with high expectations too - And was not disappointed in the slightest.
I really do think that you will enjoy Black Swan. What it is is an intense character piece - That part of The Wrestler I liked and here Black Swan is an intense character piece with a well-done story (well, the story itself is pretty simple, but the players and the direction are what make it so great). I honestly do recommend that you see it in the theater if you can. It's worth it.
Plus, I know that you really like character-driven pieces. I do think that you'd love this.
I'm considering giving my self some time and then seeing it again.
The theater was dead. silent. And I'm the one that's CONSTANTLY complaining about how people talk through movies - This movie was so incredibly intense that for the first time (since probably Inglorious Basterds) it shut the audience up. You could cut the tension in the theater with a knife. I know it sounds ridiculous, but it was utterly fantastic. Too many times I have been upset in the theater because of an obnoxious audience, but here's a movie so powerful that everyone was speechless up through the end credits - then it was great to hear the excited chatter - I think everyone was as impressed with it as I was.

Very glad that after Shutter Island this year here’s another brilliant movie that comes with bit of an old school vibe of dark, twisted psychological thriller and the great news is this time in Black Swan the content gets unpredictably impulsive, results a shattering experience in a Roman Polanskian way. As Darren Aronofsky already admitted after making the film, there’s an adequate influence of Polanski’s Repulsion & The Tenant in Black Swan. And as a great fan of this sub genre I like to salute his effort & the way he make use of that ‘influence’ in his own convincing fashion.
Aronosky proved his talent in dealing with dark, sophisticated & thought provoking subject matter in his earlier films like Requiem for a Dream & The Fountain (haven’t seen Pi yet). After The Wrestler he depicts a complete different art in Black Swan with darkly gleaming looks where again performance is disturbingly demanding. It’s a daunting tale of a ballerina (or we can say BalleNina) who gets lost into a spiral web of delusional fantasy and chilling reality. Like the theatrical tragic finale of Swan Lake, Portman remarkably delivered a ‘perfect’ & her career defining performance in this film. Kudos to the great little, powerful supporting cast who all gave a much needed perspective on Nina's slowly developing descendants into the madness.
Overall, a nail-ripping provocative thriller indeed which is surely one of the best in 2010.

I wasn't impressed with this film. The character becoming unhinged was done better in Pi and The Wrestler had a lot more humanity characterwise to compliment the bleakness and was more subtle with the downbeat storyline. The Polanski rips made me cringe along with Aronosky trademark buzzkill storyline (this was basically Requiem For A Dream but with ballet especially the last 10 minutes). Black Swan was all flash and just seemed hollow to me.
