Let’s start by saying I saw the devil was banned from public theaters in Korea. According to the Korea Media Rating Board, the movie has scenes that “severely damaged the dignity of human values” so they gave I saw the devil a “restricted rating” which means the film is only eligible for limited screenings in special theaters which exclusively program adult films. As no such theaters exist in Korea, the film is effectively banned. The producers made some changes and after twice being refused a releasable rating, I saw the devil has finally been cleared for release with a ‘teen restricted’ rating, the highest allowed in Korea’s cinema chains.

Kim Ji-woon takes the tried and true serial killer formula but not before flipping it on its disturbed head… Here’s the official synopsis:
Kyung-chul (Choi Min-sik) is a maniacal serial killer who drives a yellow school bus and preys on young women. He captures and kills his victims, but their deaths are not the end of his madness. While the police have been aware of his actions for some time, they have never been able to put a name or face to his crimes.
When the corpse of a retired police chief’s pregnant daughter surfaces, things change gears and the hunter quickly becomes the hunted. Yet it is not the girl’s father who swears vengeance, but rather her secret agent fiancé, Joo-yeon (Lee Byung-Hyun), who decides to track down the perpetrator himself. Anyone with even the remotest information on the killer’s whereabouts is in for a bloody beating. But when his mission starts to come together, Joo-yeon morphs into quite a disturbing monster himself.

I have this film..I'm so excited. Friends of mine have seen it and said its a revenge film so brutally awesome its gonna blow you away!! Hell Yeah!
Anyone else interested in it or has seen it already? My subs are perfect!! Fuck!!!!! http://i374.photobucket.com/albums/oo184/woodenheart_2008/konfetti.gif

TwitchFilm's comment:

Revenge is a dish best served cold, someone once said. In Kim Ji-woon’s I saw the devil, revenged is served so fucking cold it’s like a block of ice smashed across your face.

NOTE: Can someone please move this to the Asian horror section, please? Was actually about to start a thread about it in there, but found this thread instead.

I'm pretty psyched about this film - Rue Morgue just gave it a spread in this month's issue. Plus, it's directed by Ji-woon Kim, who did Tale of Two Sisters and The Good, The Bad, and the Weird. You don't see many Asian serial killer films and this sounds utterly fantastic. Plus, you have a star-studded cast...

Has anyone seen this yet? V? Roshiq? Psycho D? It's not available on Netflix yet and I don't know when it will be.

This movie is top class and Choi Min-Sic is as stunning as ever as the evil rapist/murderer.For me he is one of the finest actors of this generation.

Gruesome and chilling this movie has something for everyone.

My one gripe is that at 144 minutes it is a tad too long, two hours would be just right i think but lets not be fussy eh,get the film and enjoy.

The Villain

So i just finished watching this and man what an amazing movie. Something i focus on a lot and is very important to me in movies are the characters and as you can probably tell by my name, i love villains. Well this movie had a great villain in Kyung-Chul. Smart, sick and twisted. A great performance from Min-Sik Choi.

The "hero" of the movie Soo-hyeon was equally amazing and an evenly matched opponent for the seemingly unbeatable Kyung-Chul. Excellent performance from Byung-hun Lee.

It might have been long but i was so immersed in it that it didnt feel long at all to me and it didnt drag on. I definitely recommend.

FINALLY got around to watching this movie and... Wow.

To say that I was impressed - To say that my jaw dropped a few times - To say that that held some of the some of the best performances that I've ever seen... All understatements.

As it's been mentioned, part of what makes this movie so incredibly powerful are the intense and gripping performances by Min-sik Choi (absolutely chilling) and Byung-hun Lee (agonizingly biting) - I was particularly impressed with the latter, who shines as the haunted victim, resolute on revenge. His fierce and unblinking demeanor was horrifying as he descends into tragic anti-hero-dom.

In terms of direction, each scene was filmed with deliberate ease. The writing and the story and the ending - oh God the superlative ending - All well done. This tale unravels slowly, with delightfully shocking peaks and climaxes until the pinnacle scene of perfect vengeance... My jaw did truly drop a few times... Great suspense and action interlaced with poetic tragic drama - Definitely an epic Korean Revenge flick, up there with The Vengeance Trilogy, though less playful.

Fantastic film - HIGHLY recommended.

5/5.

Pretty decent film, but I wouldn't say it was his best (director or either actors).

Oldboy was awesome, bittersweet life was incredible.

One of my all time favorite movies, ever. This movie is simply amazing and I love everything about it.

The Chaser and the Vengeance trilogy are on my watchlist, aside from Oldboy.. which wasn't as good as ISTD but still a solid flick. The twist was disgusting and frankly I don't understand why it's that highly rated on IMDb... makes me think most people are, deep down, really messed up. The twist kind of killed the overall movie, but still, an enjoyable watch.

Korea had been delivering some fantastic movies the last ten years, and this is certainly one of them. Loved it.
