I decided to check IMDB to see how many horror movie remakes there were per decade going back to 1916 to see if there truly are more remakes than ever, and these were the results according to IMDB:
1916-1930 - 10
1931-1940 - 10
1941-1950 - 9
1951-1960 - 15
1961-1970 - 23
1971-1980 - 14
1981-1990 - 34
1991-2000 - 26
2001-2010 - 74

Its hard to say if these are remakes or just adaptations of the same literary source material.
I know there were a good few versions of Hound of the Baskervilles when cinema was in its infancy.
Before 1950 - how many or those remakes weren't based on a book?
(incidentally how did you research this)

I typed in remake and narrowed it to horror movies. It wasn't something I claimed to have worked my butt off researching; I just wanted to get some idea of the average amount of remakes, and I would say there was a noticeable spike in the past decade.
This is it:http://www.imdb.com/keyword/remake/?title_type=feature&genre=horror&sort=release_date

I've always found it interesting how recently remakes have become essentially their own subgenre.
