The blood is not even coagulated on the second one, and already Paranormal Activity 3 has a release date. Paramount have set the date for a third entry in their phenomenally successful Paranormal Activity franchise.
Fans of both the original and this year’s megabuck-earning sequel won’t have to wait long – in the grand tradition of quickie horror sequels (see Nightmare On Elm Street, Saw et al), Paranormal Activity 3 will hit screens a year after its predecessor on 21 October, 2011.
Paramount seems to be setting the series up to be the new annual Halloween tradition, now that Saw is (allegedly) done for good.
Naturally no details beyond that have been released, but don’t expect Paramount to mess with the formula that has so far earned them a bucket-load of cash (over $300m combined).
Paranormal Activity 3 is set to face-off with the Steven Soderbergh-directed thriller Contagion, featuring Matt Damon and a raft of name actors (Gwyneth Paltrow, Marion Cotillard, Kate Winslet, Jude Law, etc.). Damon's last movie, supernatural thriller Hereafter, debuted opposite Paranormal Activity 2 and was crushed.
Saw distributor Lionsgate hasn't given up on Halloween and will release supernatural horror movie Dibbuk Box a week after Paranormal Activity 3.
Paranormal Activity 2 was directed by Tod Williams and has collected a hefty $156 million worldwide upon its October 22 release. The original, directed by Oren Peli, has collected $193 million upon its initial 2007 release. Though the sequel won't match its predecessor's $107.9 million final gross, it nonetheless performed at the high end of the sub-genre and showed excellent retention when most similar sequels fall flat (ex. Book of Shadows: Blair Witch 2). That made a third movie an inevitability.
So: found-footage visuals, ghostly presences and a house under supernatural attack should all still be on the menu.
