Indeed, horror is the one genre in which the absence of cliches would ruin everything.

Really. Couldn't the same be said of many types of genre films? Westerns, gangster films, musicals, romantic comedies, on and on...

Cliches usually exist because they work.

I'm not arguing the point- I was quoting from the article V posted.

No I hear you, I was just adding that cliches exist because they seem to work. Sure they can be overused, screwed up, or telegraphed beyond belief but if done right they still produce the desired result from the audience.
