While Sony Screen Gems is prepping for Resident Evil 4: Afterlife, the 3D sequel slated to arrive in theaters August 27, 2010, Bloody Disgusting has learned exclusively that the studio is already looking forward to the fifth film.
While Milla Jovovich is confirmed for Afterlife, it's got to be getting expensive and (increasingly) difficult to keep her onboard, even though she is married to producer Paul W.S. Anderson.
Instead of moving forward with the ongoing story, the studio is planning a quasi-reboot, which is tentatively titled Resident Evil Begins. While it's a long, long, long way off, the idea is to redo the story of a special military unit who fights a powerful, out-of-control supercomputer and hundreds of scientists who have mutated into flesh-eating creatures after a laboratory accident.
So...a reboot only 8-9 years after the franchise began? Have they really lost it?

They never had it...
I'd rather a see a movie based on Resident Evil 4. With a better ending, because if I recall it ended with "I have to ride a jet ski because the island will blow up!"

yeah that would be awesome, i often wondered why they never made a feature on Leon and Claire (and i dont mean that CG film they did lol)
as a fan of the game i was deeply disappointed in Resident Evil the movie when it came out, i hardly look at it anymore as a zombie film (if that makes sense  lol). In saying that i am looking forward to where they will go with the fourth installment, heard that it is supposed to be set in Japan.

Prison Break star Wentworth Miller has landed a role in Resident Evil: Afterlife, according to blackfilm.com.
Boris Kodjoe, another actor who's joined the cast, revealed the news in an interview with the site. He also said that Ali Larter - who played Claire Redfield in Resident Evil: Extinction - would be back as well.
Kodjoe also let slip some plot details, saying: "I play the leader of the survivors in LA. Milla Jovovich's character, Alice, is roaming the world looking for survivors and she's wound up in LA, which has been burning for three years.
He went on: "She comes across an LA jail surrounded by [zombies]... and there's a couple of survivors and she lands on top of the roof and partners up with me to fight the guys that are coming after them. We're trying to get all of the survivors out of the jail to safety."
The actor doesn't say who Wentworth Miller might play, but one possibility is police officer Leon Kennedy, who fans of the franchise will know hasn't appeared in any of RE movies yet.

RE4 is going to be in 3D? Interesting, I'd definitely go to the theater for that one. Only saw the first film of the series in the theater.
As for rebooting the series so soon after the original, that's a bit bizarre. Endless sequels for movie series are one thing but rebooting a series that's not even old yet boggles the mind. Hollywood simply can't come up with anything new.

Depends if you count "degeneration", he was in that and IMO exceeded most of the RE "live" films.
That said, if something like a reboot/prequel were to happen, Resident Evil 0 on the gamecube (and only, right?) had a pretty interesting storyline, tying in elements of that would be cool.

RE: 3 ended very openly... Why not just continue?
Here's the answer to that question...
Principal photography has commenced in Toronto on Resident Evil: Afterlife, the fourth installment (but the first in 3-D) in Screen Gems' games-to-film franchise. The first film's director, Paul W.S. Anderson, is back at the helm, and he also scripted and will produce.
Milla Jovovich returns as Alice while Ali Larter and Spencer Locke reprise their roles from Resident Evil: Extinction as Claire Redfield and K-Mart, respectively.
And, as rumored, Prison Break's Wentworth Miller has been cast as Claire's brother Chris Redfield.
Also new to the cast are Shawn Roberts (I Love You, Beth Cooper), who replaces Jason O'Mara in the role of the villainous Albert Wesker, Boris Kodjoe (Surrogates) and Kim Coates (Sons of Anarchy).
Anderson explained in a statement that in Resident Evil: Afterlife, "Alice's battle with The Umbrella Corporation isn't finished. Last time we saw Alice, she let them know she was coming after them. It's time to settle the score."
"The Resident Evil franchise has successfully entertained audiences around the globe and we are pleased to bring yet another installment to fans with the same creative team but this time in 3-D," added Screen Gems' honcho Clint Culpepper.
Resident Evil: Afterlife is slated for a fall 2010 release.

Rumor has it that Resident Evil fans may have to wait longer than expected to enter the Afterlife.
Shock Till You Drop claims that Screen Gems has pushed the release date of Resident Evil: Afterlife, the fourth installment in the game-to-film franchise and the first to be in 3-D, back from August 27, 2010 until January 14, 2011.
The site says the filmmakers realized the film "would take a lot longer for the post-production 3-D processing work, so they've given Anderson a few more months to finish the movie and have moved the comic book-based vampire thriller Priest, starring Paul Bettany, up to fill that late summer slot."
However, Resident Evil series star Milla Jovovich Tweeted that rumors of Afterlife's release date change are premature. "RE Afterlife IS NOT officially pushed. There have been talks of pushing it as they r not sure they can have it ready by July," she wrote, adding later, "We r trying as hard as we can to still meet the summer deadline though, so for the moment its still on for Aug."
Resident Evil: Afterlife is filming in Toronto under the direction of Paul W.S. Anderson, who also scripted and is producing.
In addition to Jovovich, returning cast members include Ali Larter and Spencer Locke as Claire Redfield and K-Mart, respectively. New cast members include Prison Break's Wentworth Miller as Claire's brother Chris Redfield, Shawn Roberts as the villainous Albert Wesker, Boris Kodjoe and Kim Coates.

Not so excited, but I'll be seeing it.
I thought #3 was just utter shit, I actually quite hated that...but, since the other two were, flawed but watchable enough I thought it's worth a shot.
Also want to see something else in Cameron-style 3D.

I think Avatar finally shorted something out for me, I walked out of that movie in pain...even though I loved beyond loved Avatar.
No more 3D for me-if they do not have a 2D option like some of the theaters do, I will have to bite the bullet and wait till it gets on DVD
You really hated #3 Cheebs?
I thought the fact that they didn't even have the basic necessities, it made the whole film so much more...gritty and interesting and the fight scenes were outstanding

On her Twitter page, Resident Evil star Milla Jovovich revealed and confirmed new details on the next film in the franchise, Resident Evil: Retribution.
Jovovich confirmed the rumor that Leon Kennedy and Barry Burton will make their first appearances in the series and they’ll be joined by Ada Wong, who appeared in the video games Resident Evil 2, Resident Evil 4, and The Darkside Chronicles.
Jovovich also announced that Chris Redfield (Wentworth Miller), Claire Redfield (Ali Larter), and K-Mart (Spencer Locke) won’t return but Sienna Guillory will reprise her role as Jill Valentine. Shawn Roberts will also return to play the villainous Albert Wesker.
Principal photography is set to begin on October 16th.
Resident Evil: Retribution is due out in 3D on September 14, 2012.
Caution – Potential Spoilers Ahead:
Chris, Claire, and K-Mart won’t return because they’ve been abducted by the Umbrella Corporation. Also, fans should expect an epic fight between Alice (Jovovich) and Jill.
Jovovich also tweeted to her fans that the mind-controlling parasite “Las Plagas” featured in Resident Evil 4 will be used in the movie.
The actress also said her husband and the film’s director Paul W.S. Anderson has a massive chase scene planned for Retribution:
the red square sequence is THE MOST COMPLICATED CHASE SCENE PAUL HAS EVER PLANNED FOR! ITS GONNA BE EPIC!
its gonna be SIIIIICK!! paul leaves the production meeting reeling from the logistical complications off how 2 shoot them!!
we’ll b the 1st movie 2 hve a chase scene in a rolls royce which we will get shot up, but still runs cause they’re awesome!
Finally, Jovovich says she hopes to make a sixth Resident Evil that brings all the major characters together, which hints that all of the new characters will survive Retribution.
