View Full Version : Fat people aren't discriminated against enough

I'm so sick of hearing fat people complain about discrimination. If I was responsible for hiring people for any job, the last people I would hire would be fat people.(unless the job was eating based) let's look at facts:
fat people get sick more often
99% of fat people are fat because they are lazy and unproductive, they eat because they are bored
fat people take up more space
there are a lot of jobs fat people just can't do physically
most people think fatties are gross
does anyone disagree with any of that? if not, why do you continue to stick up for these blobs?
are you fat? why on earth are you fat? you really want to go through life as a fatty?
if you're not sure if you're fat or not, post a picture of yourself and I will tell you.
if you're not sure if you're fat or not, post a picture of yourself and I will tell you.
That actually made me laugh out loud. Being serious.

yeah lack of pants isn't a deal breaker.

I guess this is an issue that I have some perspective on...
I'm carrying more weight than I ought to...having a very shoulder-y and generally stocky/muscular build kind of carries it a lot better than it would be in a lot of cases...though yeah that said I draw the line between myself and those perceived as "fat" which IMO is just the general term for obese...kind of a few steps away from what I am.
Er, tank-ish perhaps?
Essentially my diet's good just my lifestyle/excersize I need to work on, part of the reason I got my dog.
Though I'm not sure if I'd be in the category you're talking about...I would imagine you're thinking about BIG FAT people, like, all fat no muscle, men with bigger tits than women, sweaty fat people that don't even fit into the standard "x" sizes?
Yeah well...I have to say I think that it's a little off-putting, like, why haven't they done something about it before it's got quite THAT bad...I look at myself now and acknowledge I'm a work in progress that needs improvement, then when I see a person bigger, twice my size, gut hanging over their crotch, arms that look like pork roasts, never NOT out of breath...I yeah, feel a little bit like they're either lazy, or just stupid to not even have self preservation to the point that it'd see them much past the half way mark in most peoples lives.
I'd probably deny them a job that had to do with physical exertion like security patrol, manual labour, or dealing directly with the public as obviously it's something that they're unaccustomed to in their lifestyle outside of work, and often they'll meet with persecution on sight from "customers".
Though, if it were a job where they could just sit on their asses...something like a manufacturing line, or office work, data entry, call centre stuff, there's a lot of jobs they'd be capable of doing.
That said, I think you're assumption that most fat people eat lots/too much/when bored or otherwise substitutionally is incorrect...most cases that I've known about personally stem from lack of exercise more than anything, and not so much amounts of food consumed, more the types of food...but again this is about lack of activity, the "easy" choice is often worse for you.
I have to say though I think they're discriminated plenty...I mean hell I'm an overweight guy and I myself have this perception of them though I'm perhaps a little more accepting of them, hey that might just be because they make me feel better about myself, or maybe I just think about what their life would be like...if you take a look at them, not many of them even seem to have many friends, they tend to not be taken seriously by the opposite sex so if they ARE in a group situation they'll be the perpetually single "fat" person of the group.
(In my case...I've actually SEEN people avoid me because of my overall size PLUS weight, it's like they think they're going to get hurt? Though I don't cop nearly as much as I would if I was JUST "fat")
It may be their fault through incorrect diet or lack of action, but that doesn't mean that their life doesn't suck...I would say that in the workplace and for job prospects you'll find they're already pretty shunted in a lot of cases.

I'm mainly talking about fat people who consider themselves disabled. most people I know do not exercise and they are not fat, how much not exercising can one person do? I still think I'm right and it boils down to eating too much. exercise is important, but not as important as your diet.
I think a lot of people are a few pounds overweight and work on it, I'm not talking about that. I read a story of a 500lb "woman" who caused a big fuss when a cab driver refused to let her in the taxi out of fear that she would damage it, people were siding with this "woman"
why hire a fat person when you can hire someone who isn't fat? any reasons?
they aren't disabled, they are FAT. we need to remind them so they can stop just living with their "disability" and sort their lives out.

I guess I don't feel the overwhelming disgust and outright hate some people have for obese people, but I do wonder sometimes how someone's weight could have gotten so out of control.
I myself am carrying too much weight, but not to the point where I have to buy 2 seats on an airplane, use one of those scooters or a wheelchair to get around Disneyworld (you wouldn't believe how common that is), or have no choice but to wear a muu muu because nothing else will fit.
Nothing like going through a couple of pregnancies to make the weight creep up on you. I avoid junk food, don't eat fast food, and walk a couple of miles a day and lost some weight, but I don't think I'll ever get back to the weight I was when I was 21.
I do feel there's way too much hostility directed towards obese people the same way I feel there's way too much hostility directed towards smokers. Might as well open that can of worms too.

the same way I feel there's way too much hostility directed towards smokers.
Different level if you ask me...same deal though really, people doing something they're aware messes with their health.
Personally the smoking thing pisses me off a little more...it's like there's no such thing as second-hand fat is there?
I do get a little annoyed at inconsiderate smokers - but other than that it's just a stupid decision that's theirs to make, I appreciate those that do think of others and won't light up in areas where those around them have no choice but to cop a face-full.
The argument that annoys me most though about that?
"Its my right to smoke where and when I want", I'm all for rights, just so long as they don't encroach on others, eg - the right to not breathe it in.
While I'm all for the personal choice for a person to inhale what they like, I don't want that choice made for me too.
Personally to that end, I hope to see the say public smoking is banned all together and that parents should be required by law to smoke in rooms their children aren't in, and while pregnant, not at all (the whole "it's my body" thing doesn't apply when it's not just YOUR body, a baby isn't an organ)...I can't really have any other problems with the habit, people can have bad breath and lungs all they like if that's something they opt for, I just think that like any other drug habit, however accepted, it should be kept to ones self.
Though I will say - I am all for smoking establishments/bars/cigar rooms, if it makes the air cleaner for everybody else and can stop smokers from feeling as though their rights have been trampled...cool there.
I'm mainly talking about fat people who consider themselves disabled. Yeah that's what I was thinking...well maybe not even THAT fat, there's a level or two beneath that that's pretty disturbing too.
I still think I'm right and it boils down to eating too much. exercise is important, but not as important as your diet.
I think you're right and wrong. I agree with diet being of fundamental importance...If laziness is their lifestyle, then they're more likely to opt for 'fast food', or pre-prepared/processed "quick" food which REALLY isn't good for you when you're not getting enough exercise, and you don't need really copious amounts of it for it to effect you in a negative way if you don't work it off...this compounds if you eat it habitually, again, I don't think that shovelling in HEAPS of it is the only thing that could make them fatter...not to say that some of them don't though...the more extreme the case, the more likely being a glutton comes into play, but I think the basic condition can exist and be serious/bad without eating LOTS of food.
I guarantee that if these people had a proper exercise routine, their weight would not be so prolific, and to the point that it's more of a degenerative disease than a body type/weight category.
they aren't disabled, they are FAT. we need to remind them so they can stop just living with their "disability" and sort their lives out.
I think that if you don't think this is happening...it's probably because you don't really hang out with/associate with them much, I don't know about there, but here, a person like that gets called on it all the time and constantly has various reminders and problems with employment/people.
I think the thing is honestly? They've resigned to it. Grown used to it. Tried dieting for a week or something and didn't have the discipline to stick to healthy eating more often than not. "It's too hard" etc.
Must be a bit weird, knowing you're going to be a statistic before your 50's.
While I think they should FIX the problem, or well, die...I do find myself sympathising...not so much with their condition, mainly at the fact that they're probably just walking dead.

Yes, second hand smoke is definitely a more intrusive problem than any obese person, but I still don't like the way smokers are often treated like pariahs.

Agreed. More public shaming would go a long way to curing this ignominious epidemic. Boredom and a conspicuous lack of willpower is a poor excuse for a disability.

i think hot chicks should be discriminated against. if i was an employer i would never hire a hot chick - let's consider the facts:
1) infinitely more likely to get sexual harassment suit working with hot chick than fat slob;
2) more distractions staring at hot chicks walking by - leads to more workplace accidents
3) sleepless nights inspired by sweaty fantasies
4) marital break ups
5) ultimately disappointed (when her brain-dead buff boyfriend shows up at office parties)
6) callouses ('nuff said)

I know exactly what you mean. Aside from those who have some sort of genuine condition which causes them to pile on the pounds, they have nothing to complain about. Well...perhaps I wouldn't say any hostility towards them is justified. Some like the way they are and it's not really our place to deem what's right or wrong. But it's those that feel sorry for themselves about it. Those that "want to lose weight but just can't". I wanted to lose weight...so I did. 19 pounds between April and July this year. I have no problem with people being fat, I have a problem with people being fat and not liking it. Something that they have the power to change and want to change, they should.

I'm forty pounds overweight right now. I'd like to drop twenty. While there are a lot of fat people who eat because they're bored, there's an equal number that eat because of trauma, depression and our society's weird interrelationship between food and shame. There are some people who become sex addicts because they think they're worthless due to molestation, neglect or abuse. Just as many people develop eating disorders because of that. And a spiral or worthlessess starts. You make a child feel worthless, they get worthless. So, a lot of the time, obesity is a consequence of mental illness. I have seen many a slovenly inbred aberration against God who doesn't have the drive to eat anything besides chicken nuggets, I will concede to that, but I don't think you have the whole story on obesity. Should an obese person sue for discrimination? Depends on the job. If the job is one in which a person will need to be moving around, it stands to reason, you should pick a lighter, more agile person. This is not a matter of discrimination, this is a matter of logic. A person with Down Syndrome shouldn't sue because they can't be head of the Journalism department at Columbia. BUT if an obese person is doing intellectual work for which they are more qualified than other applicants, then they should sue. If Alfred Hitchcock wanted to be a film professor and they hired some thinner grad student instead, he would have been right to sue the living fuck out of those people. If I found out somebody refused to publish work of mine because I'm forty pounds overweight, I'd feel like suing the fuck out of them. Then again, you'd have to be an idiot to not publish authors who are overweight because about sixty percent of us are.

At my restaurant we have a 350ish server who is one of the best we have. Quick for a big guy but in my line of work you would never hire an overwieght person cause they simply arent fast enough. When tables are comin in one after another you need fast and quick people to handle it. Thin line between discrimination and customer service reguarding restuarant work.

authors are exempt. alfred hitchcock's weight was always changing, so he wanted to lose weight and was able to, but he could never keep it off. for the most part fat people are worse for the environment (even considering the fact that they die sooner) the medical system (again even though they die sooner) and smell worse. most of them can change and decide not to.

it was a toss up between this and tackling the myth that rich people are snobs and the true story of how poor people (lower middle class) are assholes.
Doc Faustus

I don't think rich people are snobs. The majority of them are completely uncultured and tasteless. I was raised poor as dirt among rich people and I have seldom seen more feral children and deplorable manners. Poor kids will bash you with a rock in a playground fight. Rich kids have pocketed a pair of scissors to threaten and try to cut off your earlobes. (I know this from experience.) That's not to say the poor are innately decent and the rich are innately indecent. Same numbers of psychopaths at both ends of the spectrum, it's just that some of them have been told they can rule the world and others can't see beyond raping something because it smells nice. For the most part, you find plenty of reminders that we're carnivorous apes no matter where you go or how much money you have. Some of the smartest people I know are poor and some of the dumbest I've known have been rich.

of course there are exceptions, there are plenty of rich assholes but I am saying that if there was a way to measure the percentages, rich people are generally nicer than poor people. generally, people are poor because they are stupid and/or lazy. we may like to think that rich people are just lucky and are all from wealthy families, but it's not true.

We're post apocalyptic more or less. The bottom has fallen out. Anything you could have said about class when capitalism as we knew it was "stable" doesn't apply now. People in the arts, for the most part, well educated poor. People with BAs, educated poor. People who picked the wrong horse to back, furniture stores, real estate, are poor now. Yes, a lot of rich people worked hard to get where they are. Their dipshit children did not. For every one of these nice rich people (who by the way, would never eat at an I Hop, I'm poor as dirt but still spring for better restaurants than that if I decide to go out for dinner) there is an anthropoid golden retriever, blonde, overbred and incapable of doing anything but breeding with the pedigreed doofus picked out for it. You cannot say that the working poor are fat, slackjawed rednecks because you see fat, slackjawed rednecks around you. The urban working poor and the minstrel class are different, the number of jobs available in the middle is different. Grad students are becoming just as "worthless" as the uneducated. Teaching positions are fewer and farther between. I understand what you mean about rich people being more polite and less angry than poor ones. But you also have to consider what the poor have to be angry about as opposed to what the rich have to be angry about.

Dude. Bacon is totally hot right now. I did a Google image search on "Suicide Girls" and came up with three different pics of bacon tattoos...
...
Not that I necessarily want to defend the fatties, but as I've complained before, it absolutely pisses me off that it is more expensive to eat healthy than it is to eat junk.
Pasta and pasta sauce are dirt cheap while meats and fresh veggies can get pretty pricey (depending on the season)... Of course, with $.99 offerings at McDonald's, I don't see how a financially-struggling family can turn that down, especially if both parents work and there isn't a whole lot of strength left to cook.
It's always pissed me off how expensive orange juice is... And I mean the 100% Juice stuff compared to the cheap orange "drink."
Of course, all of this can go back to the "exercise more" argument, but I remember watching a news story about families with obese children who lived in the Projects... They actually wanted their kids to stay inside and play video games because the neighborhood was too dangerous... :(
I guess I'm missing the point, though - The bigger disgust is intended for people who are overweight and do nothing about it but feed (heh) their cause. I get that. Just wanted to play devil's advocate... The cost of healthy food really drives me crazy.

McDonald's is actually quite expensive over here so you'd have to have a bit of extra income to burn to take a family there.
I made pasta last night and it fucking ruled.
Totally hear you on the orange juice price. Quite ridiculous not wonder people have to go the unhealthy option. I pretty much have to save buying the 100% orange juice for when I'm ill with the flu or whatever and really need it.

partial quotes from wufongtan, stop the presses.
It wasn't a quote actually; You said you worked in a restaurant. You fetch peoples food. Like i said it isn;t a job for the wealthy. Nor the intelligent, really if you think about it. unless you run the place, you don't make that much money really. It might seem like a lot when compared to other members of your family i don't know. But meh.. It even isn't really a job of the middle class.
I never claimed to be wealthy. do you even understand your own motivations or do you get confused sometimes while posting?
I understand. I understand you said most people who aren't wealthy are stupid or lazy. And since you're not wealthy i asked which are you..stupid or lazy?
I don't recall ever saying I was a "dish jockey" either. Is that is a general term for people who work in the hospitality area of the service industry? I make much more than most people my age and I only work 15 hours a week.
Yes yes. This is the internet. Where everyone earns much more than everyone else.

people with a higher IQ get paid more than people with a lower level of intelligence.
I've worked at fancy restaurants and restaurants like IHOP (would never work at mcdonalds as it is poor asshole central) and from my experience rich people are generally nicer/more intelligent people.
of course there are exceptions, there are plenty of rich assholes but I am saying that if there was a way to measure the percentages, rich people are generally nicer than poor people. generally, people are poor because they are stupid and/or lazy. we may like to think that rich people are just lucky and are all from wealthy families, but it's not true.
Going by your theory here, I'm guessing you're poor because the quoted post above clearly lacks anything resembling an iota of intelligence.
Thanks for reminding me why I never even bother to look at your shallow, egotistical posts.

Getting back on topic, I discriminate against people who are greatly overweight. I assume that if you are, say, 500lbs, then you likely aren't trying to get better, and if you aren't trying to lose weight then it's your loss. I will not go out of my way to be helpful, and I will scoff behind their backs. If you're riding through Wal-mart in a scooter because of your weight, I refuse to like you. People who are a bit over weight are fine, sometimes that's just genes, or a few bad choices when it comes to diet, or they have a good diet but a sedentary job. Generally these people are healthy enough individuals.
If I were an employer I wouldn't hire people who are in that first category. Chances are, they wouldn't be applying anyway, but instead collecting unemployment and disability cheques. People in the second category would only be hired if they had a super personality and good work ethic, which most of them suffer from inflated self-confidence in order to deal with their issues so no big deal there. Pretty girls would be hired even if they were only of moderate intelligence, and all other employees wouldn't fuss because they'd be sharing in the hug tip pool.

I tend to agree with you-I used to be fat-I got tired of it and lost weight. This is no easy trick though it's a constant battle-but true a lot of them just dont want to admit they have a problem, which is why you often see people wearing clothes completly wrong for their size or are too lazy to try to do anything about it-

I used to be fat as well, and I could not agree with you less. Fat people are not always lazy, such as myself. I worked in a factory at 300lbs, stacking and building trusses, assembeling lighting and electrical equipment for concerts. I worked just as hard as everybody else. I liked to eat, I still stayed active through work. I used to lift weight (I still do today) and do pushups, I was fat but also very strong. I think your stereo-typing fat people, there is a small community of fat people that are still healthy and productive.

Saw a duco once. It was looking at the health of fat people. Every fat person they tested, who led a active lifestyle, like you say you did. Were just as healthy as their lighter counterparts. During exercise test, to meassure their fitness. Their heart rate was just as good as the skinny persons. Their lungs etc. operated just as efficiently as the skinny persons. etc. Some could even handle the exercise better than their skinner counterpart. The show was on 4 corners abc. They had a woman on there. While she was no fat Albert. She was big. And her heart, lungs lactose build up during exercise was, every bit and in some case better than those of what is considered healthy bmi's. They Carried this test out on a number of people with very high bmi's . Who also led active lifestyles. And the results were similar. unless, you fall into the category of obese. Having a high bmi, doesn't always equal unhealthy or unfit. Take a hottie like me for example. My bmi is what is called over average. But my waist is still under a 100 cm. But my high bone and muscle mass, pushes me over the limit, what is thought to be a healthy bmi. It's this fluctuation in people's bone and muscle mass, which lead to many armed services dumping the bmi, as a way of telling if a person is the right weight for the services. But then again. This is science. You probably don't understand

Although I am not obese in the traditional sense, I am according to the BMI index which is a crock of crap.
I honestly cannot believe that someone would post something like this here, I guess you have quite the "balls". In the working world people are hired on their merits and not their physical appearance, unless you are a model. There are laws about job discrimination out there just for the purpose of a potential employer with your mind set for the protection of the potential employee.
If discrimination occurs against people that are over weight, where would it stop, how about people killing themselves every day with every puff of a cigarette they inhale. Or what about people that are adrenalin junkies who might die, if they jump out of plane. Or what about pregnant women who while take time off to spent with their babies. Do you see my point? Where would it end?
So do you think obese people should not board a plane or pay for two seats?
You pose an interesting question, but I think in America where fast food is available everywhere I think it is all too easy to become obese and our population is at an all time high with obesity, so you would have to not hire a lot of people and that is just not right.

If you beileve this I think you're being a tad naive. they may tell you to you face but at the back of their mind it is part of the decision to hire people.
I know this is just a yahoo fluff piece but this was front page yesterday:
6. Being overweight can work against you.
Even though overweight individuals can be fast on their feet and slim people can be lazy, an interviewer might assume an obese job candidate won’t be able to keep up at a “high-performance” company. Cohen gives the example of a manufacturing company that prided itself on efficiency and speed. Every prospective employee was taken on a walking tour of the large plant before being hired. If the prospect couldn’t keep up with the owner’s fast pace on the facility tour, he or she wouldn’t be hired. If you’re worried your size may be working against you, Cohen suggests emphasizing how adept and resourceful you are.
I'm sure a large amount of potential employers might discriminate against me have visable tattoos despite them having no bearing on my ability to do the job...
