For several months last year, a bearded and bizarre Joaquin Phoenix had everyone wondering, "Has he gone insane?"

Now, there's finally an answer – sort of.

The theatrical trailer for I’m Still Here, the Casey Affleck-directed documentary about the actor, 35, has just been released, and it offers a peek into that strange time.

The preview, which features a man giving Phoenix a lesson about the journey of life (in an analogy that likens life to falling drops of mountain water), shows the unkempt actor partying, performing as a rapper, stressing out and attending church. A night-vision camera even captures him wrestling on a bed.

The most shocking moment? Seeing Phoenix’s giant white gut. In among the other delights of Casey Affleck's forthcoming "documentary" about Joaquin Phoenix's supposed fall from grace are a scene in which a rival musician defecates on the Oscar-winning actor's head while he is sleeping, and another in which he is given oral sex by a publicist. That's according to a recent report in the LA Times, based on comments from someone who's supposedly seen the film, although who knows what will emerge when Affleck delivers his final cut?

It’s still unclear whether this is more fiction than straight documentary, or if he's acting or not. But if that now- infamous 2009 TV interview with David Letterman is any indication, the film, which opens Sept. 10, is bound to be ... interesting. According to that Times report, the buyers for whom the film was screened earlier this year found themselves utterly incapable of deciding whether the movie was the real deal or not. That could either be an indication of Affleck and Phoenix's powerful wind-up skills, or an indictment of Phoenix's worryingly worsening mental state.

I don't think it matters.

If Phoenix was genuine during his time off his rocker, his promising career will probably never recover. If he was genuine, he probably doesn't care. If the whole thing was a grand "life as art" performance piece, with Joaquin Phoenix playing "Joaquin Phoenix", it comes off as a pretentious, vain, egotistical, and ultimately hollow endeavor.

Wow. Crispin Glover is a crazy person.

Joaquin Phoenix is also a crazy person.

They're both clearly self-aware, but that doesn't really negate the fact that they are both crazy.

I think that the Phoenix documentary looks interesting though. And I agree, the most disturbing part to me was that pregnant gut... Duuuuuuuude...

I love his movies.
I think maybe he is into drugs, maybe he has mental health issues...but who cares, his work is truly amazing.

Casey Affleck came clean to The New York Times today, admitting that his Joaquin Phoenix-meltdown documentary I'm Still Here was in fact a phony piece of performance art.

It seems amusing in hindsight that each time Deadline referred to the film in the past few months as a "mockumentary," distributor Magnolia Pictures and the filmmakers were incensed. But really, this revelation is about as shocking as when WWE head Vince McMahon revealed that the results of professional wrestling bouts were prearranged.

More interesting: the Times unearths an interview done that Late Show with David Letterman writer Bill Scheft in Nuvo.com, where he admits that the fix was in on Letterman's famed interview of Phoenix--with Letterman in on the ruse. "That was all an act...Think Andy Kaufman without shaving," Scheft said. "That’s what he was doing. And Dave knew about it and Dave loved it because he could play along. He could do whatever he wanted with it. And he did, and it was great television. But I will take credit for the line, 'I think I owe Farrah Fawcett an apology.' That line was mine. I gave that to him during the break. Dave loves that. He had a ball. He likes anything that’s good television, and he knew that’s good television. I’ve told people that (everyone was in on the joke), and not only don’t people believe me, they tell me that I’m wrong and that (Phoenix) is a schizophrenic and he needs help and he’s going to end up like his brother. I said no. I saw the segment notes. It’s an act. I saw Ben Affleck’s brother taping the whole thing from offstage."

Affleck tells The Times that "I hope Joaquin gets nominated for all kinds of awards. He deserves it." If Scheft's quotes are true, Letterman and Phoenix hosed their respective audiences, and I don't think they give awards for that. Each has hurt his credibility. As for Affleck, he's too good an actor to waste two years following around his brother-in-law for two years to film a joke many feel doesn't have a good enough punch line.

Apparently Casey Affleck (who made the "documentary") now admits it's all a spoof. If you watch Phoenix' Letterman appearance last year you can see it's a fake, his being extremely clever but not genuinely out of focus.

Phoenix is due to be on Letterman's show this coming Wednesday 9/22 and this should be the tell-all.

And yes, Andy Kaufman comes to mind. But bottom line, Phoenix was faking.
