And as we all know, Elvira got it all from Vampira:

When I was a lad growing up in the midwest we had a local Saturday night Horror movie host named Dr. San Guinary. He was amazing. He was a huge local celebrity.

I love those James Coburn intro's....

Only one I can think of is Freddy Krueger hosting Freddy's Nightmares. But the first horror host to come to mind for me was Roddy McDowall's character in Fright Night.

To me, being a horror host would seem like a lot of fun. Not sure why, but it does. Introducing movies or episodes, stuff like that. Maybe even develop a character haha.

I guess there aren't enough old-timers around here any more to start waxing nostalgic about the legendary horror hosts like Svengooli, Ghoulardi, Zacherle, Morgus the Magnificent and their ilk.

Well, I'm not an old-timer but I grew up watching Son of Svengoolie in Chicago. I absolutely loved it as a kid (I still watch from time to time; he's still on). I also loved Zacherle. I had a bunch of VHS tapes of him, and an autographed portrait too!

I've always really thought it was a shame that horror hosting is a dying thing. It's the ultimate thing to do when you're at home at night, just relax with some popcorn maybe, turn the lights down, and watch an old horror movie with some goofiness in-between. I'd love to see a revival happen.

There's actually a new breed of horror hosts. Some appear on cable access channels and some are alive and well on the internet. Check out Dr. Gangrene in Tennessee (a really nice guy who cut several pieces for my Halloween broadcasts) and Penny Dreadful XIII.

Cool. I'll have to check those out. I guess I never really thought about them being on the internet.
Makes me think of Ghoul A Go-Go, which is a great program, although they're more variety-show/music oriented.

I love James Coburn movies! Ever seen him in the 1978 beer commercial?

Roddy Mcdowell, Good call! If only he could have been an actual vampire host! Love him!

Speaking of some of my faves, Butch Patrick on Macabre Theater, he is friggin hilarious!

I have always wanted to be a horror hostess myself! I would probably be more like a girl version of Joe Bob Briggs! LOL

For some reason the horror host thing never really hit the UK at all. That were onlt 2 I remember - the dreadful Deadly Ernest show and there was anther one with a masked host (I think on BBC2) which wasn't too bad..

I grew up on Count Gore De Vol in the DC area. According to Wiki(I know) he's considered the longest running horror host in history, hosting Creature Feature from 1973 to 1987.
Great memories here:
