I'm looking for a book that will scare the living hell out of me. The more violent and grotesque the better. I feel like older books have more of a creepy tone to them but I'm open to suggestions from new books as well. Thanks!

Bastet's right; Poe and Lovecraft are wonderful. Stephen King and Bentley Little are my favorite modern authors.

I love Stephen King's earlier stuff especially Salem's Lot and Carrie. But his short stories are awsome. Jerusalem's Lot and Crouch End always give me the creeps. xx

Heart-Shaped Box - Written by Joe Hill (pseudonym for the son of Stephen King), this marvelous book is nightmare material. The writing is so gripping and intense you'll wish it wasn't so scary, but that's what makes it so special. I'd say it's the most gruesome recent book on the market today, so check it out.

Horns does more to that effect. Clive Barker's Books of Blood, if you're not squeamish, Jeremy Robert Johnson's Siren Promised delivers on that count as does his book Angeldust Apocalypse and Cody Goodfellow's Perfect Union.

Peacebreakers by Mindy MacKay is pretty damn gruesome. It's marketed as dystopian fantasy, but lots of organs and limbs get ripped off and it's generally just a testament to why evil is badass. Definitely not for weak stomachs (I say that because of graphic violence.) If Drag Me To Hell wasn't enough for you maybe this is.
