View Full Version : An open challenge!

_____V_____
07-08-2010, 08:59 AM
The thread title says it all.

Can we challenge all of ourselves to do this, for those numerous new horror fans out there who come here repeatedly and expect it from us?

There have been plenty of threads over the past 5 years I have been here which have repeatedly referred to this one topic, and umpteen times we have addressed them with an explanation.

And again. And again.

And it seems that every time, all the collective explanations or replies by our best members have never removed that particular doubt from the horror fans' minds.

The newest thread posted again on THAT topic in Modern Horror is no exception.

Things are a bit busy right now - with the BR III, Showdown II, Quotes, FIFA WC 2010 and the Villains 100 compilation. In addition, I am sure most of you are busy with summer stuff/vacations/studies in your lives too. But when the holiday season starts to kick in and all these projects are over, I ll want ALL of you to join hands with me to put an end to that ONE query once and for all, by all the newly registered horror fans who visit horror.com again and again, with the hope that their doubts regarding this ONE topic will be cleared once and for all, but they go away unsatisfied despite our best efforts to address it.

I will call upon all of you as soon as most of those projects listed above are over. Please wait for it. It might turn out to be a much, MUCH bigger challenge than you expect.

I will need all of you.

Soon.

Bet not.

Now that BR III, FIFA WC 2010 and the Villains 100 compilation are done and just the two tourneys remain (plus not to forget that we just stepped into the official Halloween season), this challenge will be upon us soon.

Wait with expectance. I will need all of you.

But yes, it will need your contribution. And participation.

10-05-2010, 10:29 AM
This could very well turn out to be a really tough challenge for all of you involved.

Since it's the season of Halloween (and the Boogeyman), I think it's only fair to divide this very challenging task between two groups (to make it slightly easier, if nothing else).

And if we have two groups, then we will need two group captains.

Ladies and gentlemen, say hello to the chosen ones...

NEWB

and

ZERO

As for the groups and the steep task ahead, wait some more...

Let me reiterate, this is not a competition, nor a tournament, nor a game, nor a sport.

The whole purpose of this action, is to divide the difficult task ahead into two, so that it becomes slightly easier to control and to collate. Ergo the groups.

Oh, okay. I'll try my best to help, but I'm not very good at writing essays or reviews (it always seems to come out " like movie. movie fun." or "hate movie. movie go away.") I just don't want to be responsible for screwing this up in some way.:(

On a more serious note, I really hope this will be THE defining effort HDC has ever done in it's 17 year old history.

Well...8 year old history, if you count from the times this forum was first built, that is.

Well, I was hoping that the tourneys would be over by October-end at least (sheesh Showdown II has turned to be the LONGEST(!) tourney in the history of HDC), but judging by the slow response of voters...don't think both of them will finish up before December.

THE OFFICIAL HDC TOP 200 HORROR FILMS OF THE 00s

Yes, you read that right, folks.

Since the inception of this forum, we have had several threads and new members asking if horror was well and truly on the decline. "Modern horror sucks" was basically the theme of almost every third new thread posted in our forums.

And many a time, one or more of the knowledgeable members of HDC pointed out in those threads about the numerous fantastic films that the Y2K decade has produced. But still, the nagging doubt in the new horror fans remained.

We all know (well, at least most of us know) that we have had several fine examples of contemporary horror cinema which have become shining examples of the finest in horror film making in the past decade. The first part of the decade had them, and so did the second part.

And here comes the part about the groups.

We need 200 of the finest that the Noughties (the 00s, era from 2000-2009) have put out. I need both of you groups to put your collective thinking caps on and under the able guidance and assistance of your respective group leaders, make a list of recommendations for the newly formed horror fans out there to serve as a guide on viewing in modern horror.

100 from Zero's group. (plus 25 Honorable Mentions)

100 from Newb's group. (plus 25 Honorable Mentions)

Zero's group will handle the era from 2000-2004.

Newb's group will handle the era from 2005-2009.

(now you know why I regard this as a challenge!)

Please be reminded that you have to include those films whose release dates are between January 01st, 2000 and December 31st, 2009 ONLY. None earlier, none later.

And feel free to add any good foreign horror films in your lists. Send your PMs to your group leaders who will then collect them and arrange them in an alphabetical list, before sending them to me.

Group leaders - Zero and Newb - please see that the maximum number of members in your respective groups get involved in this huge compilation. The more members are involved, the more diversified choices we will have. I am counting on both of you to help me with this immense task.

So folks, I need the help and assistance of each and every one of you to make this successful. Lend a hand, and come together with me, as we make yet another part of HDC history.

Thank you, and good luck to all.

Geez! You're quick!

I'm trying to get my head around this... Whether it makes sense for me to break up the movies into sub-genres to keep them organized.

Question for V et al: So sometimes there will be a discrepancy in IMDB between the date that they put in parenthasis after the movie title and the actual "Release Date" - As a rule, which do you go by?

In the example of Audition: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0235198/

In parenthesis, the date is 1999, but the "Release Date" is cited as '2000' - This confuses me.

Keep up the awesome work you all are doing, and I hope to see more and more people chip in as we go on.

Right now, keeping the festive season in mind, I am thinking mid-November for the deadline for deliberations. (that will give those who are ultra-busy with Halloween stuff 15 more days after October to chip in with their choices and views)

Good luck. Let the deliberations continue.

Where's V? Hope everything is going fine with him & he'll be back soon here. Really looking forward to see what turn out HDC's ultimate 200 for 00-09!

Anyway, while working with the lists I've just finished my personal compilation of 100 films of the decade (http://www.imdb.com/list/H24FdrZIrjY/).:)

But IMO, some real flubs on there, that will cause some to doubt the verasity of the premise.

Again, a call for Newb's team members. :D

Roshiq, Wicker, care to answer NE's two queries so far?

I did not vote for Halloween 2 or Zombies Of Mass Destruction.

roshiq
04-27-2011, 10:24 AM
The thing is when the voting started I think some/most of the voters didn't get much of options to "chose the best/better film" as most likely many of us here haven't seen most of those modern films that we nominated and we tried our best to give every little good film a fair chance. So it's my guess that some voted those few films (whether good, bad or crap) that they got chance/managed to see.
Now as far Rob Zombie's Halloween 1, 2 or both goes, I think it's overall got a mixed feelings from the viewers/fans. Original Halloween is so iconic that some fan just can't able to hate anything that got something to do with Michael Myers whether that's a bad or mediocre sequel or a remake coming after so many years. Personally I even didn't hated that much Zombie's Halloween & the sequel. As Rob Zombie films, both were fairly watchable & enjoyable, IMO. Although it was daring but I liked the idea (whatever good or bad) Mr. Zombie tried to put & play with Michael Myers legacy as a director in his own terms or point of views. But personally I didn't want Halloween 2 to make in the final/top list but I knew it'd do eventually as it was getting favorable votes from the voters here.
Whether big or low budget or indie effort, now a days there are plenty of new horror films are coming out every year but good or quality films doesn't come so frequently or fans somehow missed them to watch for their limited or late wide scale release. But fans always want or eager to see or waiting for good films and then when they got something bit unusual or a mediocre one in the middle of plenty of bad releases or after a long absent period of desired quality horror film then I think sometimes some of us overwhelmingly 'welcome' or tag them as a good one.

ZMD is a mediocre zombedy, IMO.

I'd highly recommend Open Water, The Ninth Gate, and Incident At Loch Ness out of that list of films you haven't seen yet.

Thanks for the recs, Wikcy:) I think I got the Open Water & Ninth Gate in some of my 6 in 1 DVD collections...hope to see them both soon. And as far Loch Ness film goes, I think I need to download it from a torrent site soon or later.

Pieces of crap was probably too strong of a term, so I'll just say IMO none of the following films deserve to be on any list that begins with the word "best" or "top."

2001 Maniacs (2005)
Bug (2006)
Freddy vs. Jason (2003)
Friday the 13th (2009)
Halloween (2007)
Halloween II (2009)
Jason X (2001)
Jeepers Creepers (2001)
Jeepers Creepers 2 (2003)
Saw II (2005)
Saw III (2006)
The Midnight Meat Train (2008)
The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (2003)
Thir13en Ghosts (2001)
Alien vs. Predator (2004)
Cube 2 : Hypercube (2002)

Now see- there's a problem with the methodology. If the purpose of the list is to introduce people to the best horror films of this millennium, to counteract all the cries of "modern horror films suck," then there has to be a stronger criterion than "I didn't hate it." Otherwise, people are going to watch the films, and say, "meh- those were boring" or sucked or whatever. And then they dismiss the list out of hand and their original opinion remains unchanged.

Yeah, I know what you mean. I had to pick films that I had seen (which narrowed the field somewhat). I didn't think I could just guess whether they were good judging from what other people said.

I agree with Wicker that 250 is a lot. A list of 100 would be stronger, IMO.

That would defeat the whole purpose of this project, which started out with the sole aim to give the grieving fans TWICE as many reasons as any other Top 100 compilation that modern horror of the 00s hasn't gone down, or as they like to say "modern horror sux".

And you listed 17 films, out of 250, which is a very acceptable percentage. (233 films are good enough?! Weehaw!) I am willing to accept it. There will always be a horror fan out there who might like those 17 too. I am sure all involved will agree with me on this one.

And of course the compilation is open to debate and improvement (that's what makes it flexible). I am sure with time and constant inputs from everyone, some of the weaker entries will get weeded out and replaced with stronger recs. That would make it a more complete list.

Ok I'm gonna play devil's advocate and risk a flaming. I have truly adored all the lists on here-except this one. I 100% agree with neverending. I think the people that voted for shitty remakes should be ashamed of themselves. Congratulations you have undermined the crdibility of this list-people will see them on this list and conclude that "modern horror does indeed suck" thereby backfiring the original intentions of this. I'm sorry if this sounds harsh but people will see remakes on this list and think that bona fide modern classics like "Dagon", "Session 9", "Shutter" etc are in the same league! I understand that a lot of work has gone into this list sadly it all seems for nothing.

Weed out all the remakes for a start-no best of the decade is going to have any credibility with them in there-they prove rather than disprove that "modern horro sucks" never mind replacing them-that could be in the long term.

On another note I actually liked Saw 2 but I understand the hatred towards it.

_____V_____
04-28-2011, 06:17 AM
There are fans who liked some of the remakes - RZ's Halloween & TCM, and some of the Hollywood remakes of Asian films are the reason why Asian horror became popular in the first place.

Saw II is also a member of the HDC Top 100, so I don't understand the hate for it either.

A double edged sword. But I am open to suggestions.

Also willing to do some editing of the 250, provided I am permitted to do so by the team members who sat down and hammered out the compilation between themselves.

Lunacy

And also again:D...bit surprised by this entries:

Also, I would not like to see The Ring, a film that introduced a mainstream audience to J-Horror, eliminated.

We will have to agree to disagree on this. Believe it or not I did somehow sit through some of those remakes and I personally did not think as standalone films they were any good anyway. Hills Have Eyes for example was turned into a standard action flick with none of the mania that characterised the original.

Don't get me started on the pinnacle of ultimate evil that is The Ring. I think it did the opposite of what you suggested and actually turned people against japanese horror originals. I've lost count of how many times I showed people the original Ringu which they dismissed as being inferior as "its not as graphic or exciting as the hollywood remake" they claimed. The same can be said for The Grudge etc. No one I know who likes the remakes more than the japanese originals has got into japanese horror. If a film has subtitles or is considered "slow" it will never be accepted by mainstream audiences who demand that films are dumbed down so they don't have to use their brains while watching a film.

TheWickerFan
