View Full Version : The next HDC Top 100 - I need YOUR help!

_____V_____
06-27-2010, 09:50 PM
We have hammed and hawed through numerous subjects to make our next top 100 compilation, but somehow none of those discussed could exactly fit the bill. I went back to 2006 and rummaged through my mentor Flayed's threads and my old threads, and saw that we have left out one group of individuals who really, REALLY deserve to be recognised in their own Top 100.

Because folks, we are all lovers of horror. And for every horror movie to be a horror movie, he/she is an essential and integral part.

To make things a bit more clear - "It's time to give the Devil his due."

Yes, I am talking about all the fantastic villains who have graced the horror silver-screen from ages and generations. Right from the times of Lon Chaney Sr's Phantom and Graf Orlok, to the modern-day Jigsaw, the villains in horror movie history have evolved continously through the decades. Some really menacing, unstoppable, relentless, brutal, savage, merciless...think of every known evil adjective for them and you will immediately have a horror movie villain fitting that bill in your thoughts. Mainstream, cult, creature, monster, slasher, killer, psychopaths...all of them dominating the horror films with their larger-than-screen presence.

I ask for your help. It's been a long time since we made our last one so let's make this project the most memorable of the lot.

Put your thinking caps on, and your mind back to all the wonderful and awesome villains you have seen in horror movies in all the years you have watched them, and send me your top 20 horror movie villains. You may rank them if you like, or you may send in an no-ranked list, either way your opinions will count in the final compilation.

PMs are welcome, but with the BR not done yet, I would prefer if you sent it to my email at [email protected]. A simultaneous prodding post to this thread confirming the same would be of help.

Keeping the tradition of Top 100's intact, the deadline is spread right into the next month. You all have till the last week of July.

Let's do this. :)

Great idea.

Knew you would like it. :)

One more thing, folks - judge them by their performances and their on-screen presence too, and not only by their popularity among the masses alone.

Try to be slightly impartial, if you can.

Take your time over it. Don't rush your decisions AND your emails to me.

hehe...you may have know that I have already trying to compile a list of my personal Hundred Horror movies. So I think it will be "easy" for me to make a list of horror movie villains out of them...but to narrow them into only 20 is going to be bit challenging.

Anyway, kudos to V for again coming with an awesome project idea. Hope you can get my e-mail very soon. :)

does it have to be strictly "horror" movies ?

one of the best villains ever to grace the silver screen is in a western.

Sure thing.

You might be surprised when you sit down to type them out though. I have a feeling you will go past 20.

I need more. The more, the merrier. Right now I have 5 lists and about 140-odd names. Let's see the total stack up to at least 400 before I start the sorting for common names and high ranks.

Gonna take my time and compile an obscure list. How will the final order be determined. Are you gonna take an average of the lists or something.

Well, for all ranked lists it would be by the system Flayed used for compiling the first Official HDC Top 100 - Your #1 ranked villain will get 5 points, #2 gets 4, #3 gets 3, #4 gets 2 and #5 gets 1 point. The villain with the highest points will lead the pack, then second highest...you get the gist.
If there is a tie in points, then the number of lists he/she figures in. If that's a tie too, then the ranks he/she holds in various lists.
And if we don't have 100 villains with at least 1 point, then I go through the remainder of the top listed ones and find the highest ranked ones in each of them.

For unranked and no-order lists, I am in the process of asking the sender to mention their Top 5 at least. Will make my job easier.

Just one question:

If the villian is a number of different films, played by different actors across decades - do we just mention the Villian or the Villian and actor or the Villian and film.

Would I list FU MANCHU (which could mean a number of actors)or FU MANCHU in The Mask of Fu Manchu (which would mean Karloff's interpretation).

Its just feels a bit weird putting down just DRACULA (for example).

Yes I got it, Horror4ever. As well as WeaponX's list.

Thanks to the following too - Krylon, Toni (what is your ScreenName in here?), Bwind, MissM & especially TheWickerFan for the continuous inputs.

If the villian is a number of different films, played by different actors across decades - do we just mention the Villian or the Villian and actor or the Villian and film.

Very valid point, and something which I am thinking about long and hard at the moment.

If we take Dracula in general, it would be a wide variety of portrayals from Lugosi to Lee to Oldman - and all of them played a different Dracula in each of their representations.

If we take a particular representation of a common character - say 5 different actors for Dracula - the list might become too monotonous, like say 5 different Draculas, 3 Frankenstein's Monsters, 3 Wolfmen, etc...you get my drift.

I am thinking of one single common villain character for 2 reasons -

1 - If that particular villain character has more than 1 brilliant portrayal behind him/her, it would have it's own particular section with 4-5 different sub-sections. For example Dracula could have Lugosi's, Lee's, Oldman's...listed under it. This would give us ample space to highlight the character AND have plenty of room for blurbs et al for the different portrayals of the same character.

2 - Accumulating them under a single roof will leave a bit more room to pull in some other deserving and underrated villainous characters who otherwise would get ejected out. The list would have a bit more variety and look a bit more refreshing, plus it would be a good way to give a nod to those who usually get overlooked for their more popular and mainstream counterparts.

You can go ahead and send me either a general list, or a specific list of your choices. Either way, the particular villainous character will have it's own space in the 100 for sure - either big or small.

I am open to suggestions for this though. Feel free to put forth your opinions too.

Just a suggestion.

Cthulhu - don't think we have had a kickass brilliant adaptation of it in the movies yet.

Godzilla - strong contender.

Cujo - Haven't seen it in any of the 12 lists submitted.

The only giant monster staking a claim here would be Godzilla. The rest would be humanoid monsters/creatures like the Gill-Man, Wolf Man, Alien, etc.

Villains are more driven by performances. People will submit those whose evilness filled their screens and their minds, rather than suits or CGI without expressions. We are pretty safe there.

Yes I have received it. That takes the total tally to 14 lists so far.

I am loving the variety of choices listed in the entries. Good to see everyone thinking hard and putting their best choices in their lists, more importantly in the top 5 of their chosen 20.

(which will help me immensely when a particular villain like Dracula might get his own section)

And you will never guess who has the most points and is leading the pack of the most vile men/women in horror right now!

It's none of the usual popular ones you are thinking of.

I need more. Plenty more. Keep thinking and send me those lists!

I only skimmed through this thread and have been compiling my list but specifically ignoring the like of Jaws, Godzilla et al. I assumed they would fall into a monster category rather than villian. I don't really feel like they fit, personally, but I would rather create a list that follows the system everyone else is using and rework it to include all the horror monsters and such that I have so far been ignoring. I don't mind how it works, but if half the people are adding things like Godzilla and half aren't due to different interpretations then all those monsters are gonna end up annexed to the bottom of the list anyway.

Or maybe we need a top 100 evil inanimate objects list? The African Doll from TRILOGY OF TERROR? The Car from THE CAR, or from THE WRAITH or from MAXIMUM OVERDRIVE...

Shit man, you could probably make a list with just the most nefarious cars, boats, motorcycles and bicycles

Following their instincts can be said about most known villains in movie history. Leatherface, Michael Myers, the Alien, the Jaws shark, et al...everyone followed their instincts.

I agree that deliberate villains are many in number, but instinctive villains are also plenty.

Godzilla stakes a pretty strong claim in that department. Especially in the first 2-3 films it was portrayed in.

Don't forget, Pinhead is some sort of a hero in the first Hellraiser film. That doesn't reduce his villainy in the Hellraiser series.

I think Godzilla should be included in the list as should any animal or inanimate object that generates enough votes , but the instinctive monsters don't seem to get under the skin the way the deliberate monsters do.

And just because Pinhead disposed of a villain in the first Hellraiser movie does not in any way make him a hero.

I'd see Godzilla to be more of an antagonist than a villain. He's the key problem in the situation and the overall negative force but I don't see him as a villain as such. It's odd, because you can't really say it's because he doesn't see what he's doing as wrong because some of the best villains do what they do with what they see as the best intentions. Even so, I just think there's SOMETHING missing. Can't put my finger on it.

These are the most popular horror villains so far (appearing in 5 or more lists) :-

The Alien
Asami
Count Dracula
Freddy Krueger
Dr Hannibal Lecter
Jack Torrance
Leatherface
Michael Myers
Norman Bates
Pennywise
Pinhead
The Thing

In addition, there are plenty who stand on the borderline of popularity - which means they figure in 3-4 lists.

But being popular doesn't necessarily mean they are leading in the Points table. That's an entirely different cup of tea. ;)

Big thanks to urdevil for chipping in with a nice list as well. And thanks to Jenna for that fantastic compilation sent to me via email.

The list is growing, folks. Already we have over 245 entries and 68 villains in the Points table so far.

Keep them coming till the end of July. Then we start the final countdown.

I vote in favor of Godzilla to make the cut. How's the list coming along?

Godzilla is a force of concentrated malice. As is Michael Myers. If Michael Myers is a villain, Godzilla is a villain. But, as a force of concentrated Satanic misanthropy, I'd say King Ghidorah is a better giant monster example.

Thanks for your list, Doc.

21 individual lists so far, and a umm...small list from Angra. As you all know, the time ends in the last week of July so those of you who asked for some time to compile your lists, send them soon.

I hope to have the compilation up by the first week of August, so if you have a favorite villain in mind to write a blurb about, feel free to book him/her.

Ok, wait, so Monsters DO count? I'm with Straker - I was purposefully avoiding Godzilla, Jaws, Alien because I consider them "Monsters" rather than "Villains" (interesting point that Doc brought up because I just had the Monster/Villain argument with my boyfriend re Mike Meyers - He says he's a Monster. I'm inclined to agree intellectually, but at the same time I think he's a Villain).

Yes they do. Most monsters are villains, although all villains are not necessarily monsters.

Thanks!

And we must rank these lists, no?

I'm trying to go with "more obscure" to hopefully flesh it out a bit.

_____V_____
07-14-2010, 09:13 AM
Yes. If you can rank your Top 5 at least, out of your listed 20, it would be of help. If you choose to send in an unranked one, it would do too.

ChronoGrl

And can we give you more than 20?

Sure! I would love it. :)

I wouldn't say that Jaws or an alligator would count, but Michael Myers is valid because he is an incarnation of evil. He works via concentrated hate. And hate is bad. Aliens and alligators and sharks don't hate and don't have apocalyptic/satanic links. If something exists solely to destroy the earth, it is an agent of evil. It's not trying to eat, it wasn't taken out of its natural habitat, it isn't destroying the earth to survive, it's committing an act of malice. Leatherface I wouldn't put on the ist because he's an unwitting dupe. The real brains of the outfit is The Cook. Monsters can be villainous if they are instinctually committing acts you would call evil for reasons beyond survival.

Very interesting point, Doc.

Come on people...show me your lists!!! We are into the last 2 weeks of the schedule!

I'll have to say, I had a really hard time with this just because of the criteria I set for myself as what a true villain is to me. My list wasn't even 20 long.

Fully agree with Doc. Evil intentions & doings that all matter to be a villain, not the natural instincts for survival. Most of the poor creatures were out there in wrong time & wrong place, that's just might made them that bad.

Received yours, Flayed. Thanks for the list.

Still waiting for plenty more from all the HDC-ians. Come on people!

A big Thanks to Massacre Man for taking some time out and sending in his list.

69 villains shortlisted so far. Hoping to zero in on 31 more from the pending lists which some of you have promised but haven't sent in yet.

That doesn't mean that those who haven't promised and are reading this cannot send me their lists. Come on people! Let me see those lists!

A point to moot - 3 of you listers have sent in Carrie White as a Horror Villain. What is the general consensus on this dubious entry?

I don't see her as a villain, she's the victim of horrific bullying and a brutal mother. They are the villains IMO, not her.

That's how I see it too. Will be interesting to hear Doc's take on Carrie.

Anyone else?

Carrie's Mother is the villain in this case. A fantastic villain. Add her.

i did look back at my list and noticed I added Carrie, I am now wondering why. Cause yes the more I think about it she was a victim not a villain, I also agree her mother was more of a villain.

I was hoping for at least 5-6 more but oh well...

I am in the process of sorting and merging in the Excel sheets. The 100 will be up sometime next week.
