I was thinking about some old TV series that I enjoy a great deal: I Claudius and The Fall And Rise Of Reginald Perrin.

I Claudius was about events that took place during the lifetime of Claudius the Roman emperor. Derek Jacobi as Claudius, Brian Blessed as Augustus, Sian Phillips as Livia, John Hurt as Caligula, plus many others. A brilliant series.

The Fall And Rise Of Reginald Perrin was a comedy about a middle aged businessman who becomes bored with his life and starts to behave rather strangely. Every character seems to have their own catchphrase.

Have a good day at the office dear

Is anyone else familiar with these old TV shows?

I've never seen Reginald Perrin, but I love I Claudius. Jacobi was simply magnificent in that role, and the script was brilliant. It even has a young Patrick Stewart- with hair!

Patrick Stewart was fantastic as Sejanus.

There aren't many opportunities to watch these shows. I Claudius is available on DVD, but Reggie Perrin is only available through Amazon UK (you'd need a multi region DVD player for it to work).

Leonard Rossiter will always be Rigsby in my eyes. I think Perrin was decent, but Rising Damp is a genuine classic. Superb cast, tragic that both Rossiter and Beckinsale died while still working.

I Claudius had Brian Blessed, don't need much more than that to make it worth watching.

I think Rising Damp came on PBS once when I was 11; haven't seen it since then.

Brian Blessed is awesome!! "Quintillius Varus, WHERE ARE MY EAGLES?"http://www.bbc.co.uk/bbcfour/drama/images/claudius2_gall.jpg

Christopher Biggins as Nero!
Robert Graves is my favourite Author and I love both the books that the series I Claudius was based on. Livia is kick ass. Nice to see a strong woman among the idiotic men. I actually once had to give a presentation on the character of Livia for a job interview- didn't get it as I compared her to the previous Director of Nursing!

But Livia did it with so much more class! The grapes on the vine were inspired!

She was certainly determined to always get her way; no matter what the cost. She was a truly evil woman.

I don't see her as evil; just driven. xx
