I was at a Bloodclots show (California punk band) and started talking to the singer about Clive Barker, he mentioned that Cenobites and the Hellraiser universe were open license, I have never found a concrete answer to this, does anyone know?

What do you mean by open license? Like Public Domain...? Or do you mean anyone can write a story/make a film without paying to use the imagery?

Ahh right I gotcha now :D
I haven't heard that anywhere and don't imagine Barker would let perhaps his most iconic characters be public domain.
Maybe the dude was confused by all the fan films out there? I believe you can make those freely as long as there not making any money.

That may be the case, but I gather that Barker is a pretty easy going dude.
Maybe he meant anyone can use the term Cenobite but not Pinhead or any of his buddies specifically.

Maybe be wants to create a 'Cenobite Mythos' with other writers in the same way Lovecraft did with Robert Howard etc

Yeah, it's possible, I do hope that is the case but my internet search safari has yet to yield results.

If I remember right, Clive Barker actually encourages the creativity from his fans to use the hellraiser mythos, but in no way is it public domain.

Stephen King also allowed limited use of his work with the dollar babies.

Are any of the fan films any good?
I never got round to checking out the SK stuff Ferox mentioned but I heard there were a couple of goodies in that lot.

I've only seen "Hellraiser: Prophecy". Which, despite being incredibly cheesy, clive barker liked haha.

I like the first three, but it's pretty much a downhill trek.

I didn't think it was possible for an artist to copyright his work like that. I mean, look at what happened with Wes Craven's creations. Up for grabs to anyone.

Eugh, the amount of times I've tried to find an answer to an HDC question and done that.

I think you misunderstood me - I meant Wes Craven owns the right to the Freddie Kruger character and he was used with permisson in all the sequals. I can't remember but i'm sure there was a 'Original character created by Wes Craven' in the credits. I don't think you or me could go out and make Nightmare on Elm St 25 with out clearing copyright (unless we live in Turkey :-)

There are some anthology books on the theme of the cenobites, but I haven't read any yet. I'd like to write a cenobite short story myself, there's a lot of room for creativity on this subject. :)

We just finished a second (and much improved over the first) Hellraiser fan film, HELLRAISER: DEADER - WINTER'S LAMENT (2009) which is at

...for anybody who feels bored/brave/interested.
HELLRAISER: DEADER – WINTER’S LAMENT (2009) is a 30-minute fan film prequel to the seventh studio Hellraiser film, HELLRAISER: DEADER (2005). It is a character study with horror elements, which explores the backstory of Winter, the mysterious antagonist of HELLRAISER: DEADER. The film is nonlinear, with the story intersecting several characters and events from THE PROPHECY (1995), HELLRAISER: BLOODLINE (1996), HELLRAISER: DEADER and the filmmaker’s previous crossover fan film, HELLRAISER: PROPHECY (2006).
Phillip Merchant, a professor of theology is given the news that his brother has been killed by the demonic Cenobites. His brother’s widow tasks him with finding and punishing the creatures responsible for his death, a duty that he reluctantly accepts. Chronicling the events of the ensuing nine years, we watch as Phillip assumes the Winter identity, and acquires arcane knowledge and skills as he and his cult of followers quest to find and control the Cenobites, ultimately leading to his confrontation with the austere Cenobite leader, Pinhead.
HELLRAISER: DEADER – WINTER’S LAMENT is a non-profit fan film crossover created in a collaboration between biologist Jonathan S. Kui and cinematographer John Hudak, Jr. Filming took place on location in Mt. Sinai, Cold Spring Harbor and Lake Ronkonkoma, NY as well as at Liberty Studios in Manhattan. This true “labor of love” was created with the support of a team of volunteer crew, many of whom were trained in filmmaking, and several who were not. As a result, this community effort has produced an earnest fan film prequel whose goal is to do honor to the film entries that preceded it.

I watched it... pretty good for an amateur film. Good storytelling.
You need to get tighter in th closeups.
The shaky steady-cam in the library scene is annoying. There's no reason to use it there.
Pretty good effort over all.

I tried once, it ended up being convoluted and silly.
Like to try my hand at it again though.
