I only watch the football, hockey and basketball depending on whose playing. Never had much interest in flying down a tube of ice, jumping into sand, skating fast in a circle, etc.

Not really, I'm not really a fan of the Olympics. Its Unfortunate that even fencing (my dream sport) is in the Olympics. Luckily I don't do Olympic style.

Yeah I mean at least this one started with a bang...
Though I have to agree, generally I find the olympics a bore.
I think in the winter games people fall down more so that's a slight improvement, but seriously...what about the people that actually sit and watch the running events? Or the whole damn thing?
The people who let it eat a chunk out of their lives?
Shit, if you're THAT into sport, go fucking play some rather than sit on your ass watching people shed pounds while you gain 'em...ech...people do watch some shit.
I personally think all sports and sport events should have a "crash/fight/fuckup ONLY" abridged version available, that's the ticket.

Anybody that needs that many more hours of wacky, out of context sports to entertain them should just play videogames.

but that's all this Olympics has been so far really. I will give you your abridged version.

Guy dies in luge accident. video is shown in ctv, controversy ensues.
Peaceful protests begin in downtown Vancouver over just about everything imaginable.
Boring failure of an opening ceremonies begins, Native Chiefs are late so we don't start on time.
Ceremony ends with the cauldron for the Olympic flame not even working. Works 20 seconds before the torches would have gone out.
"Peaceful" protests turn into people breaking all the windows at the HBC store.

So far that's all I've got. Canada kicked ass at women's hockey last night and won a silver in women's moguls. (US won first but whatever.)

I will watch various events from the Winter Olympics,so far all I have seen is the ski jumping and Nordic combined(Which is ski jumping followed by cross country skiing).I don't follow any of the sports in between Olympics and I don't always have a clue what's going on, but I find it all strangely entertaining:confused:.
It's the same deal with the Summer games,At any other time I couldn't give a monkeys about Rowing,Cycling,Archery,Swimming etc etc but when it's the Olympics I'm compelled to watch.

The opening ceremony was awful though, but they always are,I expect the London 2012 opening will be full of prancing bowler hatted fools with umbrellas and plethora of Mary Poppins lookalikes flying around.

I think it goes without saying that if you don't like sports then you won't like the Olympics. It's like saying you won't like a Nightmare on Elm Street marathon if you don't like horror films.

I am watching women's hockey right now, which I have never seen before. The events that are actually sports can be entertaining; the events that are scored by judges, like the x-game stuff and figure skating, are crap though.

I can see "boring," given a person's interest in sports, but I'm curious as to what makes it "stupid."

I am an avid anti-sports type... but the Olympics have always fascinated me since I was a child. I love them for just the reasons you state. I'm a bit saddened by the cynical hipster attitude many exhibit, but I guess that's the prevailing attitude these days.

My quote button doesn't seem to be working...though I'll stand by the statement above...While I acknowledge the statements made here in regards to cynical/hipster business might not have been aimed exclusively towards me, I just wanted to say that if indeed any part was, I don't think my attitude towards the Olympics if reflective of some kind of perceived "cool to dislike it"...I grew up in Australia, a country that's perhaps as much or more sports mad than the states...I already copped it enough for not getting into football, cricket, all that shit, I didn't get into these things because I tried them and didn't like them.
I like swimming as a leisure activity, I like baseball here and there, I enjoy watching thai boxing, but that's about where it ends for me...even those I'll tend to switch off after a while - Done all three myself.
The reason I don't watch these things is because I have no interest in them whatsoever, and yes, I think those that would dedicate so much time to watch these things could better spend their time...I watch things in which I have an interest, there's no need to front that.

Does a dicipline more dull than figure skating exist?

It takes forever and the athletes all HAVE to do the same boring stuff. The only thing you can hope for is people falling, or even better, hurting themselves. Blood is more than appreciated.

Now, figure skating fighting that would be much less gay and a constant hit, i'm sure.

We need more violence in the Olympics.

They need to bring back Pankration..

Nothing like naked guys beating the shit out of each other..

http://news.bbc.co.uk/nol/shared/spl/hi/pop_ups/04/europe_the_ancient_olympics/img/5.jpg

Even more brutal was the pankration - a blend of boxing and wrestling which again had no time limit, no weight class and even fewer rules.

Only biting and gouging an opponent's eyes were banned - but in truth even this took place.

Stories of death abounded and athletes were even given legal immunity in cases of unintentional killing during matches.

I don't think the Olympics are COMPLETELY boring... but the problem is you've gotta sit through hours and hours of boring coverage to get to the five minutes each Olympics that's actually interesting. Like, I actually enjoyed watching the final event where Michael Phelps broke the record 2 years ago... but sitting through all the other events would have been torture.

USA hockey is bringing back the olympics in this country. Not much else to watch that is this exciting. This is the first win against Canada since 1960. Russia better be bitting there nails cause were comin for them. A gold in hockey will be the biggest thing almost ever in winter olympics for USA.

Ehm, I might be the only one, but the Olympics are huge in Holland, especially the speed skating. I personally love it ever since I was a kid and with me millions more. The Dutch are usually very good at it and this year is no different.

Waw, I never even heard of this! It's a USA movie about something Dutch? Very odd.
They (meaning Dutch film makers) now made a movie called 'the Hell of 63', which sounds horrific, but actually is not. It's about a brutal ice skating contest we have here whenever we have ice that's thick enough (last time was 1997). It covers 200 kilometers (approx 165 miles) and goes around the 11 cities of the province of Friesland (in the north). In 1963 the weather was so bad and it was so cold that contestants got lost, audiences went through the ice, many were injured, etc. It's got a of lot of ice skating in it and it's a pretty decent movie for Dutch standards. See the link: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1156132/

I associate the Dutch with kickboxing - they shouldmake that an olympic event.

The most unfortunate thing about the entire event is that it is giving the president of my football club another public opportunity to make a dickhead out of himself as he hosts it.

And where is the curling, they have shown none of it in Australia.
