The Comic-to-Movie Adaptation Tournament

The last few years have seen some really good adaptations being released and hailed by the ardent comic fans. But how do they stack up against some of the all-time classics of the late 70s and late 80s? Let's find out.

Keeping this tourney strictly to mainstream stuff, I have narrowed it down to 81 selections. That's right - a short-and-sweet tourney. No animated direct-to-dvd ones (just to keep the apples/oranges comparisons out, sorry Massacre Man), or made for TV movies. There are very few exceptions which deserve to be in this (Superman and the Mole Men, for example), and so have been included.

I am still open to suggestions for last minute inclusions. Hopefully I didnt forget any summer blockbusters - if I did then apologies in advance.

Actually, the two Conan movies from the 80's are way more based on the Marvel Comic mythos that were based loosely off of the Robert E. Howard stories.

They say that the new Conan movie (should it see light) will be more heavily influenced off of the original Howard source material. The newer comic series seems to be doing a decent job of keeping in line with it as well. I enjoy both sets of mythos, although I'm not thrilled at the idea of Conan in early America (late Howard addition to the mythos) I always hoped for a good Conan the King movie starring Arnie, but I don't see it coming to fruition.

Barbarella is definitely interesting - You have your first anti-gravity strip tease and then a female-orgasm machine... All without actually seeing cooch. It's like softcore for the 70s.

Even though he looked like a twat, you have to admit Dafoe nailed the character. He gets my vote.

I guess....perhaps I'm being a bit judgemental...it was a pretty good origin story, he did get the character right, he NAILED the laugh (or whoever did it), there was good fight scenes and they did bring spider-man to life VERY well, much better than expected at the time.

IMO the best comic adaptation there's been...I can see this one making the top if the current batman fascination doesn't turn the tide.
