Help!!

Please help! I watched this horror film as a kid which was really scary but I can't remember what it was called and have literally spent hours searching for it on the internet to no avail. Its probably really popular and I'm being completely retarded but I've had enough of searching imdb lol. It started with this family, the kid was asleep, the dad was watching tv (I think he was watching hockey), and the mom was in the kitchen. This killer comes in, I don't know whether he was in a mask or his face was seriously messed up but he looked freaky as hell, he kills the mom then the dad and then the kid wakes up and comes to the top of the stairs. The killer starts to slowly climb the stairs while the kid just watches him and then it cuts right when he reaches the top. Then there's this hospital or asylum or something where this guy believes he is one of these monsters or something so he starts to rip his own face off but he's really just a human and these guys stop him half way through. That's what I remember, anyone got any ideas?????

Sounds really familiar. Any idea what year it was that you saw it, did the movie look older at the time, was it on tv, vhs, dvd?

I need to watch this movie now, because I know I've seen it but can't remember it... and Clive Barker, and David Cronenberg is in it.
