I guess Jaws grossed the most money because Americans are dumbasses. (I'm American too!) :)

i didn't know that it was...
i know halloween was the highest grossing independent film made until teenage mutant ninja turtles knocked it out of it's top slot. damn turtles!

jaws is a classic and the way it's ALWAYS on cable and has been released and re-released on vhs/dvd, over time it's possible, i guess...

Its the highest grossing horror because
a its a horror
b it made the most money

it is also a movie that changed the way we think about the sea and sharks. It put spielberg on the map! It is an awesome moster movie with top theme music and genuine jumpy momments!

PS. if a great white and a polar bear where in enough water for shark to swim but ohny up to thr bears waist, so he could wade who would win?

pps. Rat versus tarantular?
(I dont condone animal cruelty its a theoretical question, and a stupid one at that)

You can't have both. A great white is too big to swim in water that only goes up to a polar bear's waist.

I think feral cat is asking why it made the most money because the movie was not really that impressive (not much at all).

I think there are a few reasons for this...

1 - Jaws was marketed extremely well
2 - Jaws opened on a hell of a lot of screens on the same day, rare at the time
3 - A monosyllabic title
4 - A man eating shark and a damn suspenseful score, how could this movie not do well?

I like the Jaws films, but I dont think Jaws deserve to be the highest grosing horror movie, its good but not that good.

I think it's a great movie but I don't see why it's the highest grossing horror film, wait maybe because it was rated pg:rolleyes:

Because it was scary. People like going to the beach. Sharks are real. People don't care about dumbass toys that come alive, or dreams that never come true.

Sharks will tear anyone's ass UP! FO RIZZLE.

yes, jaws taps into a very real fear that people have. the fear of being butchered by some psycho is not particularly grounded, but there are people killed by sharks every year.

let me take this opportunity to say peter benchly sucks dirty asshole. He is a marine biologist, he should be educating people, not profiting from their fears. Asshole.

I dont blame speilberg, he is an entertainer. it's not his job to present the truth.

And, of course, Benchly has no imagination. He supposedly based Jaws on a real event, then went and based 2 more screenplays on the exact same premise (the beast and creature).

AND HE COULDNT EVEN GET HIS FACTS STRAIGHT FOR THE BEAST!!!!!

i have done a ton of readinon giant squids, and he didnt get a godamn thing right about them. That "ammonia smell" thing was complete bullshit.

anywho, jaws was accessible. it was also original at the time, and was made by speilberg at the beginning of his heyday. Also, take into consideration the googoplex theaters didnt exist yet. if every theater in town was playing jaws, then that's all there was.

also: Great white would eat the polar bear

rat would kill the tarantula

Polar bears are pretty dam hard, but maby the shark could do him!, but the polar bear is super strong and manuvrable and sharks have to get in the correct postion to bite!
I've always thought rat, but many people are of the opinion the big spider would take a rat down!

My pet rats just look lazy, but maby faced with impending spider doom they might get super mad and those old sewer cornerd rat instincts might come out! Im not gonna try though cause I love the little vermin!!!
