View Full Version : Thinking about the next Top 100...

12-02-2009, 09:55 AM
Just went through some of the original threads posted by Flayed and me, and some of the very interesting "would-be" compilations which still remain to see the light of the day.

And since we have an Official HDC Top 100, I think it should be imperative that we have a Official HDC Top 100 Of The Worst In Horror. After all, fans do deserve to know which ones to avoid, dont they? Doubt anyone would find anything to salvage from The Village or Pinata Survival Island or The Item...

(And for those of you who are thinking of Plan 9 From Outer Space, beware of Neverending's wrath!)

Question is, between all of us, can we unanimously agree on 100 of the absolute stinkers of our genre to steer clear of? Sort of like a huge road-block sign to stay away from these "detours" of Horror, so to speak.

Or we can go ahead and do another "Top 100" - Icons, Kills, Performances - you name it. Or (if you feel like this could be overkill), just can this whole idea altogether.

I am open to suggestions.

I will think on this and be back to you later. But, first I just to want to say that The Item is awesomely original. Since we judge a lot of other cult films on their uniqueness, I think it unfair the Item was not judged by the same standards. I think a 100 worst or a 100 Craptacular would be a good idea. I'm thinking more than we should err on the side of Craptacular.

Don't you ever need a vacation, V?

perhaps this is relaxing and therapeutic for him.

It would be tough to do "Worst in Horror".....there's SO much crap out there. I wouldn't even consider DTV shit.....just serious contenders.

It's not a concept I'd be interested in participating in. Even more than with "the best" taste is so subjective as to what is "the worst."

To paraphrase what Urge has said- he will recommend films to people, but he would never tell somebody NOT to watch a movie. It's the same kind of thing.

I would put several John Carpenter films on the list. Would anyone else here agree with me? Doubtful.

Count me out. Again.

Interesting concept, like Neverending, I think it would be tougher than other lists but I'm game.

I like this idea,we do have a list for almost everything else,it's time to put together another list, and a list of movies to avoid does sound like a good one to attempt to put together.

I'd say a bunch of stuff I really like would end in this Top 100 :)

What Carpenter flicks would you put on there? I'm sure you'd have total agreement on his later stuff. But I guess you don't rate some of the "classics" like The Thing.

Really? Not that his later stuff wasn't bad but it could be ranked among the worst ever? I don't know, there's so much obscure crap out there that I think we would walk over 100 turds well before getting to those Carpenter piles.

Village of the Damned was wretched and is the only Carpenter film I don't like. I was just getting at a bunch of people really hate is later work.

But yeh you're right there's a lot worse out there especially when it comes to horror. It seems like any idiot with a video camera thinks he's George Romero.

Yeah, we would almost have to be sure and stick close to mainstream.

The only REAL problem I foresee in compiling a Worst of the Worst 100 is, agreeing together on a 100. See, its easier to mark the greatness of a Karloff or Argento or NotLD/Alien than to mark a movie as crap.

(Like in this very thread, Doc obviously has much different opinions about The Item than me)

And its not an ONLY problem, its a BIG problem. Pretty tough to put in a movie which 5 deem as trash, and another 5 deem as a cult classic.

Already one good contributing member doesnt approve of this project. I think its better to put this on the back burner for now. Maybe sometime in the future...

Flayed has a suggestion. I ll divert my energies towards that, and take over from the pioneer of that project.

If a worst 100 wouldn't work out why not something different like Top 100 Horror Film Characters?

Nice suggestion. But do we have a worthy 100 for that?

And if it came down to this - we have to include Leprechaun - I d rather drown in a pool of acid.

It depends on what movies you'd let in. I supposed you could do a "100 Scariest Characters" and include a couple characters from Thrillers and whatnot. I know that there are 100 characters scarier than Leprechaun.

I like the suggestion of Top 100 Horror Film Characters better. If its scary, its bound to be in automatically.

I am still open to suggestions. Keep them coming.

Making a 100 worse Horror films would have been a decent idea 20 years ago (not that we;d be here) but the advent of millions of shot on video horror films makes it impossible to do. There is just so much zero budget drek like Zombie Bloodbath 3 or what ever.

I vote for Best Midget characters of all time...

Top 100 "Top 100 Lists" of all time?

urgeok2

i dont see a bottom 100 list as a recommendation to not see a movie ...
personally i'd see them all anyway.

but if you guys are voting and there is some general consensus and some guidelines .. then it could have some merit ..

at least as a warning.

personally i see it as an opportunity for some comedy.
the reviews could be pretty funny if done properly.

You could call the list : BottomFeeders Paradise.

by the way,

if The Villiage isnt #1 then the list will have failed miserably.

I don't really see a problem with a Top 100 worst movies, providing its done in the right way. As long as its got a tongue in cheek feel to it I think it would be fine. I know that there'd be a few of my favourites in the mix, but I wouldn't be offended by any of them making the cut. I'd probably want to write blurbs for them too. I think if you're coming from an angle of looking for 100 films to 'hate on' then I don't agree with the concept. If, however, its approached in a light hearted manner I think it would work well and would serve as an entertaining parody of the more classic top 100 themes.

Totally agree.

And I like the name - The Official HDC Bottomfeeders Paradise 100. Makes it sound much more sophisticated than it actually will be. It sure will test the blurb writers too, to come up with something witty and satirical about all of them.

I am in favor of a ranked list too. Would be interesting to see which film tops in all the lists as a general worst-in-horror film. (wouldn't be too surprised if it indeed turned out to be The Village)

So...shall we do this?

(I ll keep updating the Gaming 100 as we contemplate on)

Have received some interesting PMs from members who have suggested some more alternatives -

Top 100 Horror Villains of All-Time
Top 100 Sci-Fi/Horror Movies
Top 100 Hotties of Horror
Top 100 Horror Actors/Actresses of All-Time

Good to know others are going through this thread and have their thinking caps on. I am still open to suggestions about all of these, and would love to hear more from our HDC gurus on this.

That would be cool. Although there is only a handful of really good horror themed bands... I hate all the Cramps and Misfits knockoff bands out there, shits just lame. It might have to even be a top 10 :)

Are there really enough of any of those? I think we'd have to stretch pretty far to do any of those four and therefore, contrary to the purpose of the lists, plenty of mediocrity would be represented. If we're going to do something as high as 100, we need something where there's scads of good stuff to choose from that people have heard of.

Hmm...

The more I think of it, the Worst 100 sounds like a pretty solid idea. Specially a ranked one. It would be fun to compile, and see if between us we can think of 100 Extremely cheesy stinkers of our genre which would be worth a chuckle or two (or maybe an eyeroll or two) when we sit down with friends and beer to watch them.

Let's do it.

I think a So bad that they're still entertaining top 100 would be good.

Theres no point putting stuff like Zombie Bloodbath 3 etc that has no redeeming values and no one wants to see compared to say Demoniod which is pretty dire but a roller coaster of fun..I think maybe limiting to those shot on film..

As Doc Faustus say a lot of the other lists don't really serve a purpose - at least this wway people have a reference for cheapy fun movies that can be enjoyed with a beer or 2 dozen...

Expanding upon the points raised by Urge and Ferox...

How about doing a HDC Cheesy/Campy Top 100?

We would have TONS of good recs (mostly from the 70s and 80s), and each selected film would be a top choice for an evening/night of brainless fun and sheer entertainment. Specially with friends/family and beer.

I await your thoughts on this one.

Also, I would like to see this as a ranked list.

If not for any other reason than to see which film the whole of HDC chooses as its number #1 Campy Horror Movie of All Time.

Or gets the maximum thumbs ups from the majority of you, anyway.

Just think about the possible entries - slashers, sci-fi, creature stuff, zombies, gore, cheap thrills, giallos, loud background music...ooh la la...

Sample this - Motel Hell, Return of the Living Dead, the Godzilla films, The Blob, Killer Klowns From Outer Space, Gremlins, Slither, Dead & Breakfast, Chopping Mall, Troll, The Gate, Ghoulies, Tremors, House, Critters, Pumpkinhead, CHUD, Basket Case, Feast, Planet Terror...

...maybe we need some sort of a cut-off. Low budget maybe?
