Steve Carr, director of those comedic colossi - Paul Blart: Mall Cop, Daddy Day Care, Rebound and Dr. Dolittle 2 - will next focus his considerable talents on the much-needed and eagerly-anticipated remake of Short Circuit.
The John Badham-directed original, which seems to assumed cult classic status over the years despite not being very good, was about a robot named Johnny 5 who is imbued with sentience by a rogue lightning bolt. On the run from the military, Johnny 5 bonds with Ally Sheedy, and hilarious adventures are had by all.
The Carr-directed remake retains essentially the same premise, although this time – for added emotional impact – Johnny 5 will bond with a lonely young boy.
Dan Milano wrote the script for the Dimension film – his background on Robot Chicken is relatively encouraging. But if his script has a line even half as good as ‘Hey laser lips, your mamma was a snowblower’, we’ll be astonished. It might hopefully guarantee some chuckles as the story switches to the former military robot befriending a lonely boy and helping his fractured family.
