It looks like the town of Barrow, Alaska will once again be under siege by vampires.
Bloody Disgusting reports that it was revealed at this week's American Film Market in Los Angeles that "Mandate Pictures is working on a sequel to 30 Days of Night, and has Steve Niles and Ben Ketai listed as current writers."
The site says the sequel will revolve around the character of Stella (portrayed in the 2007 film by Melissa George) who is out for revenge against the vampires that attacked her town.
Bloody Disgusting previously claimed that the sequel might be a direct-to-DVD/Blu-ray production rather than a theatrical release but that no decision has been made yet.

Damn, I was hoping it would follow the book Rumors of the Undead. Ah well... we'll see how this one pans out.

Sounds pretty much right, as though they're going along the lines of the comic series "dark days", "eben and stella" with a bit of "return to barrow" possibly being in there.
The other series beyond that are just pure spin-offs.

I just do not understand why this movie has had so much media made around it. It was one of the worst vampire movies I've ever seen, and one of the worst movies PERIOD the year it came out.
I swear I about rolled my eyes out of my own head with all the stupid hissing and inward-breathing screeches they did....

We've known for awhile now that plans were in the works to jumpstart a sequel to the popular vampire actioner 30 Days of Night, based upon the graphic novel by Steve Niles and Ben Templesmith. Titled Dark Days, we last heard about the sequel from Niles, who discussed the status of the script back in April.
Apparently, the story will revolve around Stella (played by Melissa George in the first film) as she teams with a group of vampire hunters in search of the mythical vampire mistress, Lilith.
There have been a few names offered up with regard to casting, but nothing yet about who might get behind the camera.
Bloody-Disgusting has learned that director Ben Ketai, who helped to develop the 30 Days of Night web series "Blood Trails" and "Dust to Dust," may take a bite out of the project to resurrect the dead when film finally rolls on the production.
Stay tuned for further news as they break out.

If the comic is anything to go by, the setting won't be Barrow at all.

30 Days of Night: Dark Days Starts Principal Photography
Source:Stage 6 Films, Ghost House Pictures
October 23, 2009
Principal photography has started in Vancouver, Canada for 30 Days of Night: Dark Days, the sequel to the vampire movie based on the cult-hit graphic novel series by Steve Niles and Ben Templesmith. Produced by Stage 6 Films and Ghost House Pictures, 30 Days of Night: Dark Days marks director Ben Ketai's first feature film and is based on a screenplay written by Niles and Ketai.
The cast includes Kiele Sanchez (A Perfect Getaway, "Lost"), Diora Baird (The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning, Wedding Crashers), Rhys Coiro ("Entourage," "24," upcoming Straw Dogs), Mia Kirshner ("The L Word," The Black Dahlia), and Harold Perrineau ("Oz," "Lost," The Matrix Revolutions).
The sequel takes place a year since the Alaskan town of Barrow's population was decimated by vampires during its annual month long sunset. Riddled with grief over the death of her husband, bound by nightmares and void of all emotions beyond hate and sorrow, Stella (Sanchez) has spent the past months traveling the world, trying to convince others that vampires exist. Met with skepticism and laughter, Stella is ready to throw in the towel when a group of lost souls (Coiro, Baird and Perrineau) offers an incredible opportunity: the chance to exact revenge upon Lilith (Kirshner), the vampire queen responsible for the assault on her sleepy Alaskan town. With nothing remaining to live for, and nothing left to fear, Stella joins their mission and ventures into the uncharted underbelly of Los Angeles where she pushes herself to the most extreme limits to stop the evil from striking again.

SPOILERS
30 Days of Night: Rumors of the Undead is the first novel spinoff of the 30 Days of Night comic series. It is co-written by Steve Niles (who wrote the comic) and Jeff Mariotte.
Rumors of the Undead is set in between the original comic and the first comic sequel, Dark Days. It centers around FBI agents Andy Gray and Paul Norris, who are investigating Stella Olemaun, survivor of the vampire attack on Barrow, Alaska depicted in the original comic. Stella is attempting to gather weapons and followers to take on the vampires; the federal government, however, believes her to be a domestic terrorist. As the investigation continues, Andy begins to suspect otherwise.

Steve Niles recently detailed about another sequel, along with why Melissa George didn't return as Stella.
Question - "How many sequels are currently planned? Is “Return to Barrow” in conceptual stages?"
Niles - "Right now we’re just trying to get this one in the can," Niles tells, exclusively adding that they plan on bringing back some of the cast. "If that goes well, we’re set up to move forward. We got a great young cast that we can bring along if this works out well, and we’ll be ready to keep going with the story. Plus, the comics are done. God, what do we have, like seven different graphic novels now if it actually took off?"
Rhys Coiro, Mia Kirshner, Harold Perrineau, Kiele Sanchez, Diora Baird, Rhys Coiro, Monique Ganderton, Marco Sorian and even Katherine Isabelle all star in the film; but Stella was recast. Niles explains briefly why Melissa George couldn't return oto fill her shoes.
"Schedule. The enemy of all casting. She’s got a million gazillion things going on right now, so we couldn’t fit it."
30 Days of Night: Dark Days, the highly anticipated sequel, is now filming in Vancouver, Canada.
