Just some pics for now.

when i get a chance i'll throw in descriptions and thoughts.

http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a1/urgeok/festival%20of%20fear/2009/DSC_4430.jpg

Udo Kier .. as mentioned by 'Return' (i hate using nicknames once i've met someone)
his line was dead all weekend. unbelievable. I think i was the first one he saw .. i know i bought the first (and one of the only) photo ops.
I found him to be a really nice guy and he shared my frustration that unless you were associated with star trek or star wars - no one knows who you are. (deodato, h.g. lewis, and gunnar hansen had the same thing happen in the past)
I bought a t-shirt from him, got 3 him to sign 3 DVDs, and a photo op.
He was telling me about seeing a huge french version poster of Flesh For Frankenstein at one of the vendors. he was tempted to buy it but it was $$$. well that planted a worm in my brain and when i ended up seeing the poster - i bought it ... went back and got Udo to sign it (he was a bit shocked - pleasantly suprised actually) .. so much so he grabbed a photo and signed that for me for free ..

I can unerstand him getting pissed at people who just stop by to say hi .. when you're surrounded by star trek guys who's fans stop by to pay $30 for an autograph and say hi.

the picture above - he tried to get the girls to pose for me but i wanted a shot of them talking to him :)

http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a1/urgeok/festival%20of%20fear/2009/DSC_4436.jpg

James Duvall .. super nice down to earth guy. (he played the bunny Frank in Donnie Darko). I got him to sign May .. which prompted a nice conversation about Angela Bettis and working in Canada. There was no one in his line so we chatted for quite a few minutes until people showd up and i thought i'd better give them their time.

http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a1/urgeok/festival%20of%20fear/2009/DSC_4443.jpg

a 'sniper shot' of Linda Hamilton. I met her and she was funny and nice (and gorgeous) but i was too late to get a photo op which really bummed me out. I usually try to get more obscure stuff signed but i'm such a fan of Terminator and T2 that i had to get those done.

http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a1/urgeok/festival%20of%20fear/2009/DSC_4446.jpg

Canadian (ottawa) filmmaker Brett Kelly. I met him a couple of years ago and have participated on his forum since. He makes very low budget films .. he sells off props from past films to finance new films .. and i've bought a couple. I admire this guy.. he lives his passion.
His 'My Dead Girfriend' is my favorite of his - so far.

i dont know what the hell this thing is but its funny and colourful.

http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a1/urgeok/festival%20of%20fear/2009/DSC_4486.jpg

Lloyd Kaufman ! back for the second year .. He wanted me in the picture but i wanted the gang without me (i wreck every pic i'm in)
It was more fun shooting him - he alsways makes a face. Lloyd always signs for free so i got Poultrygeist signed.

http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a1/urgeok/festival%20of%20fear/2009/DSC_4495.jpg

The light cycle from the new Tron movie. They ran the film a couple of times but i dont want to see this in a screening room .. i'd rather see it in a proper theatre. (the screening rooms look and sound like crap)

http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a1/urgeok/festival%20of%20fear/2009/DSC_4502.jpg

Canadian Actor Art Hindle.
I love this guy ... he was in the Brood, co-starred with Chuck Norris in The Octagon, and is in Jack Ketchum's upcoming Offspring.
He was on the Black Christmas panel last year but came back as a guest this year. had a nice chat with him when his booth was quiet.
(got The Brood signed)

edit to add :

i look like a fucking tool in this picture.

A quick shot of Walter Koenig (Chekov) joking around with Leonard Nimoy (Spock). I was in line after a long wait or i would have been able to get a better shot of the both of them together.

Random zombie girl walking past.

http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a1/urgeok/festival%20of%20fear/2009/DSC_4556.jpg

according to a comment below this is a blood elf ? (WTF is a blood elf ?)
I thought she had cool eyes. turns out that someone at the con was selling these weird contact lenses - a lot of people had them on. very pretty girl.

More on this later.

Star Trek girls. Nerds are definately getting better looking. I like how the one in red is a casualty.

http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a1/urgeok/festival%20of%20fear/2009/DSC_4597.jpg

this was the first time anything at a con ever creeped me out. this is a kid .. probably about 10. he didnt say a word - he saw the camera - stopped - looked at me, and then kept going without saying a word. creepy little shit.

one of the many Frank the Bunnies... all shapes and sizes. Hopefully they knew enough to visit James Duvall.

This girl was plenty hot. she was almost as tall as i was .. the picture doesnt do her justice.
Later i saw her reporting for 'naked news' so she must be one of their girls.

This photo needs no explaination.

the guys who dress up for these things are good with kids. My son still gets a kick out of posing with the odd star wars guys

its enough to make you want to like star wars. well, almost.

http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a1/urgeok/festival%20of%20fear/2009/DSC_4792.jpg

Beau Bridges chatting with Erin Gray (buck Rogers). Erin was with Mary McDonnell - but she was acting as her assistant - no one knew who she was. On Sunday Mary didnt return but she got Erin and Aaron Douglas (Chief - from Battlestar Galactica) to fill in for her - which was cool.
I missed out on a photo with MAry but we did have a nice chat - she was very nice - and funny...she was genuinely pleased that i brought the laserdisc of Passion Fish to get signed.

http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a1/urgeok/festival%20of%20fear/2009/DSC_4793.jpg

My boy with Erin Gray. Funny thing is i didnt know her because i never watched buck rogers .. but we just bought the series boxset a short while ago for my son. He'll be happy he got his pic with her once he sees her in the show. Very lovely woman.

http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a1/urgeok/festival%20of%20fear/2009/DSC_4796.jpg

Chief ! my favorite character on BS ... turns out he's a canadian .. nice guy .. was able to have a bit of a chat before anyone knew who he was and got in line.

Emma Caulfield. from buffy the vampire slayer - i guess. but i knew her from darkness falls. i always liked the film but she had nothing good to say about it :)

http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a1/urgeok/festival%20of%20fear/2009/DSC_4815.jpg

Bruce Campbell - a few minutes after the signing.
he was good with my kid ..

"get over here you punk !"
"did you clean your room today ?"
then we discussed what movies my son has seen - and which ones he should see (apparently Bruce voices the Mayor in 'Cloudy With A Chance of Meatballs'.

I also mentioned to him that i was almost afraid to shake his hand after reading his book (if chiins could kill - where he recounts his experiences with the various handshakes of fans) only to find out HE had the sweaty hand - not me.

http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a1/urgeok/festival%20of%20fear/2009/DSC_4818.jpg

yep, that's Max Brooks.
I got him to sign both of his books ..
I mentioned that it seemed odd that he went to horror VS comedy .. so he wrote inside my book :

"Dave - this book is NOT funny !"

http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a1/urgeok/festival%20of%20fear/2009/DSC_4870.jpg

2 gorgeous vampire girls doing promotion in the anchor bay booth for Stan Helsing
We chatted to them for a while when i was waiting for Sue (anchor bay) to be available for our yearly pic (she and my son - its a tradition)
I got some funny shots of them reacting to the gore scenes of Laid to Rest that Rob Hall was showing at the Anchor Bay booth behind them.

Pretty gal i saw walk by a couple of times. I said to myself - if i see her again i'll ask to shoot her - and just before the end of the con - there she was. I think she and her bf got a kick out of me taking the picture - but i thought she looked cool.

Wonderful pics, Urge. Looks like Mark was having a kickass time there!

Great to see Bruce my man doing some signing there. Thats his book "How To Make Love..." right?

And by jove! Walter Koenig looks exactly like I saw him last in one of the Star Trek movies/episodes. After all these years...wow...

Beau Bridges looks uncomfortable about something. The fan perhaps?

Noticed a Billy Dee Williams section in one of the early pics. Did you get to meet him?

And is that Max Brooks beside the Zombie Survival Guide tag?

The Troma team looks like they were having a blast!

And Art Hindle...man, that thesp is still going strong as ever.

And check out that smile on Linda Hamilton's face! She looks fabulous even now!

Eagerly waiting for your reminiscences and descriptions of all the pics.

Cool! You met Udo Kier! How was the experience? Was he nice?

Only if you give him money, based on my experience.

Didn't really care to pay the exorbitant prices to get his autograph, but there wasn't a soul in his line, so I figured I'd just stop by and introduce myself. As soon as he found out I wasn't buying anything, he just scoffed and literally waved me away. Was talking to a couple other guys waiting in line for something else, and I guess he did the same to them. Cool actor, but rude as hell.

Maybe Urge had a better experience though?

Might have just been having a rough day (sitting at a table for like 8 hours cannot be fun, especially because his line was dead), I always thought he'd be cool too. Sort of interested to see what Urge thought of him, see if he got him in a better mood.

comments have been added to the pics.

on a whole the con was fun ... i met a lot of great people ..

the After Dark folks, the folks at Severin, and of course the anchor bay people were all great.
I bought a ton of new DVDs and got a lot of old ones signed.
I found the guests to be friendly and laid back.

there are others i met .. Avery Brooks, Walter Koenig, Roger Corman, Barbara Steele.. (roger Corman was pretty quiet but then - he's getting on)
Barbara Steele was kind of funny - she was obsessing over the pen she was signing my DVD cover with. "i'll not sign another DVD with this pen !!"

the convention on saturday was a nightmare- they got a capacity crowd for the fist time ever - had a giant lineup outside the door. it was cramped and i was hot and tired from lugging around my camera bag, another bag full of books and crap to get signed, plus 2 bags of the DVDs etc i bought.

i saw 'Return' - or should i say he saw me. I wouldnt have known who he was in a million years but he knew who i was and stopped me to say hi.
It was impossible to talk for long .. we were in the middle of the vendor area where it is like the flow of a river - keep moving ... and i was already exhausted by then. i went to bed each night with my shoulders and feet aching ...

but - that aside .. i still enjoyed all the opportunities i got.

next up ..

a small series of photos featuring Thomas Dekker reacting to the gore scenes in Laid To Rest.

(my kid was right there watching these awful things - i kept placing my bag in front of his face and he kept looking around. I looked right into Thomas Dekkers face and said - 'Great, he'll never sleep again' which Dekker thought was pretty funny. Sue (anchor bay) was mortified that my kid saw the scenes - but he ended up being cool with it. (i've always shown him how special effects work)

urgeok2

You mentioned the name Robert Hall in one of your pics- is that the guy who used to draw for Marvel comics, or a different Robert Hall?

not the comics guy :

Robert Hall has become one of the most popular special effects makeup artists in Hollywood. Hall's creatures were featured weekly on WB's "Angel" (1999), just as they were seen on UPN's popular series, "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" (1997), "Miracles" (2003), "The Shield" (2002), "Judging Amy" (1999), "Point Pleasant" (2005) and "The Inside" (2005). Most recently, Hall did subtle aging prosthetics on S. Epatha Merkerson for HBO's Lackawanna Blues (2005) (TV). The film was nominated for best Makeup and Merkerson won for best actress.

Originally born in Detroit, Hall began his career as a youngster in Alabama, buying makeup and materials at the local Wal-Mart for his friend's Halloween costumes. While his friends were out playing sports, Hall was busy figuring out the best way to make a scary mask more lifelike. At the age of 18 and fed up with his paying job as a chicken deboner for Tyson Chicken, he traveled more than 300 miles to Selma, Alabama, where he impressed Thomas R. Burman and talked him into hiring Hall to work as an assistant makeup effects artist on Abel Ferrara's Body Snatchers (1993). Hall moved to LA at age 19 with less than $80 dollars in his pocket.

In 1996, Hall decided it was time to step out on his own and set up his own studio. With the company's name pulled from the title of a KISS song, "Almost Human" special effects makeup studio was born. Since its inception, "Almost Human" has become one of the best in creating the industry most talked about corpses, body parts, monsters, zombies and demons, and realistic subtle character makeups.

In the early stages of the company, Hall worked with extremely small budgets on 22 films for Roger Corman's "Concorde Productions" including Alien Avengers II (1998) (TV) (aka Aliens Among Us), The Sea Wolf (1997) and The Doorway (2000).

Hall has directed music videos For Drivin N' Cryin, Buckcherry, and the popular rock group Manntis.

A veteran of over 55 films and 25 television shows, Hall made his writing and directorial feature film debut with Lightning Bug (2004) starring Bret Harrison ("Grounded for Life" (2001)/"The Loop" (2006)), 'Laura Prepon' (_"That 70's Show" (1990)_), Hal Sparks ("Queer as Folk" (2000)), Kevin Gage (Heat (1995)) and Lucas Till (Walk the Line (2005)). He is currently prepping to direct the Horror film "6 Records".

i saw 'Return' - or should i say he saw me. I wouldnt have known who he was in a million years but he knew who i was and stopped me to say hi.

Foot taller than the rest of the crowd, camera around your neck and buying a stack of DVDs the first time I spotted you - wasn't that hard to put things together ;)

And yeah, that's understandable about Kier...can see that getting annoying for sure.

Did you catch any of the Q&As? They were my favourite part...caught Bruce Campbell, Roger Corman and Barbara Steele, plus and impromptu Q&A with Robert Hall, Thomas Dekker and Nick Principe (very cool guys) after the Laid to Rest screening.

Bruce was a riot, you can tell he's a true showman. Really seemed like he was enjoying himself and having fun with the crowd, which was cool. Hilarious speaker, and exactly what you'd expect.

Corman was pretty soft-spoken (like Urge said - he's getting up there in years), but still a very interesting person to listen to. Gave a super truncated version of his famous speech for first time directors, talked a lot about how the industry worked back in the 60's-70's...gave a nice detailed account of doing acid with Jack Nicholson while prepping for The Trip, heh. Just seemed like a really cool, laid back guy.

Barbara Steele was probably my favourite of them all. Still looking gorgeous, and an incredible storyteller. The guy interviewing her was kind of an idiot (argued with her over where Shivers was filmed, based on IMDB:rolleyes:), but she was fascinating. I got to ask her a question myself, which was really cool - acting tips from one of the genre greats? Can't beat that.

I'll be going back next year for damn sure...had a blast. Really glad you posted these pics Urge - I didn't bother to take many, but looking through these puts me right back there. Awesome :)

unfortunately i didnt see a single Q & A this year - for the 1st time. I usually tape a couple.

it was so busy it took forever to get around - i was bogged down by junk, and i was already sick of waiting in lines from the photo ops and the signings.

a lot of the stuff has been posted to you-tube so i'll try to check it out there.

i'm glad the con was a sucess - i just hope its a little quieter next year.

it would be nice to go and just carry a camera some time.

What.....the wife won't let you hang it in the living room? :D

no it'll block the view of all the seasonally attired ceramic ducks :)

actually - not only is it too big for any of the dining room walls, even I wouldnt want it there .. we do maintain a certain level of decore :)

I think it would look good mounted on canvas. Although for the life of me, I cant think of a place to hang the huge thing.

Except sticking it to the ceiling. Bedroom perhaps? Or will it cause nightmares? :)

folks ..

watch this space monday (or before)

My writer friend has been hired by George Romeros company to film/shoot a zombie walk tomorrow, followed by a speach/ceremony by George Romero, followed by the private coctail party given for George and the folks who made Survival of the Dead, followed by the red carpet midnight screening of Survival of the Dead.

tomorrow is going to be a crazy fun day and i'll finally get to see the film that i was on set for one night last fall.

I'll post whatever I'm allowed to right here.
